Questions on Selling a Fishing Kayak

Featured Replies

Hey Everyone,

For those of you who have either bought or sold a fishing kayak privately (not from a business), how did you find it? I’m looking into selling mine, but since fishing kayaks are fairly niche compared to the overall kayak market, I’m wondering if Facebook marketplace or eBay are good options. Thanks everyone.

Both are good options.  I’ve bought and sold several using Craig’s List.

I sold mine through facebook marketplace and I think I got what it was worth.  The number of people interested will be smaller, but list it and work the angles.

Sold my AP120 on FB for asking price. Took a couple weeks but was an easy deal. You definitely have a larger market there.

Just be vigilant.

I sold my Hobie on FB. I just sold my boat on FB as well.

With an honest price, it will sell quick, maybe even the same day.

Be careful though. Lots of scammers out there. If anyone wants to send you money or have other interesting ways of payment, that is scam-ish.  Don’t get roped into the hold it for me thing either, make it clear in your ad, first one to show up gets it.

My old canoe went on FB - couple scammers tried for 'post dated check' even when the ad specified "Cash or Zelle only"

I'll be putting Bass Trek up there with the same qualifications....once I do a couple tweaks on it.

The newspaper in the little town that I live in has a free paper called the Shopper’s Guide. I put my kayak in it not really expecting much. It was gone the next day! Since then I’ve sold a boat, a trailer and gave away a piano from placing an ad in our Shopper’s Guide.

Last year I posted an ad for a kayak.  A guy called and asked to look at it that evening, and I told  him I’d be waiting. About 45 minutes later, an attractive young lady knocks on the door, introduces herself as his girlfriend, and says he’s stopping at the ATM and will arrive shortly.  She asked to look at the kayak and oohs and aahs at some of my modifications for fishing.  I immediately grew a little suspicious because none of the tweaks were deserving of any oohs and aahs.  She then asked if we could load the kayak onto her car and strap it down while we waited on her boyfriend.  I said no, that if her boyfriend didn’t like it I was going fishing in it the next morning.  A couple minutes later she looked at her phone and appeared to type a text.  She said her boyfriend had asked about the kayak and she texted back she wanted it, and that he was leaving the ATM and would show up in about 10 minutes.  5 minutes later she looked at her phone, said her boyfriend had run out of gas in the parking lot and she was going to go get the gas can from him, get gas, and they would be back.  She, or they, never came back.

Several weeks later, I was fishing with a buddy from a couple counties away.  When he asked where my blue/green yak was, I told him I had sold it, and then told him about the young lady and boyfriend.  He nearly choked laughing and told me that his neighbor had posted an ad for his kayak, and a young lady showed up with the same spiel and the same ‘mythical’ boyfriend.  The only difference was that his neighbor had gladly helped her load the kayak onto her car, and when her boyfriend ran out of gas, gladly let her go rescue him.  Of course she never returned, and after waiting about 45 minutes he decided to call the police.  He had paid no attention to tags, or even model of car so he was only able to provide police with color of car and the color of the kayak on top of it.

The officer told him that the kayak and racks were probably already in the back of her boyfriends truck, but he would put out an alert.  Sadly, his kayak was never seen again.

You’re selling the BassTrek????

Also - I’ve sold three using FB marketplace. It can be a little frustrating with scammers and tire kickers but you can usually tell the real people. Spin up a VOIP number or throwaway email address if you don’t want someone to have yours.

Terminal cancer, dude...I'm not gonna leave things like that for the wife to take care of once I'm gone.

Oh no…I’m sorry I missed that somehow. Good on you for not leaving it for her to deal with. I hope you can go through it at peace and comfortable.

I've made my peace with the universe...waste of energy ranting about the unfairness of it.

Some good news....Chemo shrunk that invader quite a bit...another month or so and I get another CT/PET scan to see what the radiation therapy did (just finished that this past Monday).

They can kick the can down the road a bit, but Small-Cell (lung cancer) doesn't have a cure yet...only hope is that they can keep kicking that can.

I have sold some on Facebook Marketplace last year. I listed them for the most I thought I could realistically get for them, and they sold fast and I got what I asked for.

Bought and sold mine on FB Marketplace. Make sure you're careful about the title/key words. I got my Pursuit for a song because he misspelled "kayak" or something and no one was seeing it.

FB marketplace can be excellent. Sold a few boats there and just recently purchased a John Deere riding mower.

Take lots of pictures to show the best and worst of your kayak. That will help buyers understand your pricing. I would not pay to advertise on FB marketplace. It should sell itself.

You might cross-list on craigslist, just to catch another market. My brother in law is 62, and scours craigslist daily looking for good deals.
