Only one

Featured Replies

If you can have only one set up for a 7 foot medium action pole for the winter time what would it be?  I’ll be using my new rod for the first time during the winter. I already have a jig rod, but it’s my first time fishing in the winter so I’m just curious. Thank you for your input.

My 'if you could only have one' winter rig, it would be my Kistler 7'  LMH Helium.  It's got a nice soft time but just a little more backbone than my medium Helium.  I'd hang a Diawa Tatula LT3000 under it.

Hopefully I'll be on Cape Cod next week catching SMB with it - if the temperature gets above 30* and wind stays below 15-20 mph.

My usual bait choices for winter in order......

1. Jerkbait

2. Crankbait/Shad Rap style

3. Jig - small 1/4oz football for shallow water or 1/2oz for deeper water. Both with a do nothing trailer

4. 3in Paddle Tail Swimbait on a ball head jig

5. A-Rig

All of these are fished on different rods.  Where the fish are located also changes the baits and rods. For a Medium power fast action rod, I would start with a Megabass 110 JR +1.  I usually fish it slowly. Pop the slack and let it sit. They usually hit it on the pause.

Just one, it'd be a 3/4 oz Cotton Cordell jigging spoon.

Lol!  I read "medium action" as taper not rod weight. My bad.

Based on 2025, I would be fishing a 1/8 ounce jig with a small craw trailer.
