St. Croix Rods breaking?

I broke two legend tournament premier rods and will never get this again. I do love their premier rods for bass fishing and use both for spinning and casting. Anything that has happened to those has been my fault. The musky ones just shattered on casts.

I've only broken two SC rods and they were both my fault but SC replaced them anyway. I have used SC for over 30 years and have not had any other issues and I've owned over 50 SC rods during that time frame.

I was pretty much exlusivley using SCs for fresh and salt water, for over 20 years.

A half dozen or so broke, however it was due to freak occurrences or user error.

Although I own a few new SCs, I liked the older actions and powers, I think they were more durable. Certain lines were tough as nails. The purple mojo and mojo inshores were hard to break. Theres a video of a guy lifting a 20lb weight with a 7'6 ML mojo inshore.

SC is a conservative company, or at least they were. Years after split grips became popular, they finally designed one.

The whole trigon thing is kind of a gimmick. Pelagic rods were fitted with triangular grips over a decade ago. They feel good in hand, but after a prolonged with a tuna the apexes create hot spots in your hand and cause cramps. I they're really like the plastic they used on the mojos either. It feels super cheap and bulky. That they're line or whatever they're called have outstanding blanks and components, but the trigon handle and grip ruin it for me. Same with the new Legends.

Those purple inshore mojos have a cult like following. I really like the look of the newer inshore won't they look very similar to one of SCs best lines ever made the Avid Inshore. The new inshore mojos look great, but they had a failure rate of at least 50%, likely more. They had to know it Unfortunately user error, but still charged money for replacements and replacements of the replacements. I had heard that it was at least 1, likely 2 defective batches of blanks. SC officially said it was defective blanks, but it took months. They did try to make it right, by replacing mojos with the Avid inshore, a rod that's close to double the price. Unfortunately the damage has been done. I know 2 guides who used mostly SCs because of their durability and customer service, both said they won't buy SCs anymore.

I hope they come around. They have their work cut out for them, as their reputation has really taken a hit in the past 4 years.

Ya - I tested the Trigons in store and hated them from first grip.

This year's rod selection for Bass is 12 St Croix and 1 Okuma Dead Eye.

Panfish get 1 Okuma SST, 1 Okuma Celilo and a Daiwa Procyon.

Within 10 seconds of picking up the rod, I knew it was bad news. The composite cork and clunky plastic handle assembly was a real turn off, but my head almost spun when I saw the price tag. The mojo lines, mojo surf, mojo inshore and mojo bass offered a great value and performed exceptionally well, which is why they were some of the best selling rods SC ever had. It would have been much better IMO if they had not sacrificed a line as loved as mojo for what boils down to a curiosity of a rod line. Realistically Black Bass is the successor to Mojo bass and Mojo trigon was something entirely unique upon it debut.

Agreed. Its a shame because at one time, in my opinion, they had the BEST bang for the buck in a premium rod in the industry in the early 2000s Avid models with the full cork and alconite guides. It would be awesome to get something back to that level again.

I went through something similar a few years back and at first I thought a brand had gone downhill because I broke two rods in one season. Turned out it was my fault and I didn’t realize it until the third one snapped.

In my case it was transport damage in the boat. I had rods laying on the deck and occasionally the trolling motor shaft or another rod would bump them when running between spots. It didn’t look like much at the time, but those little taps can put a tiny nick in the blank. Once that happens the rod can fail later under load and it looks like it just randomly broke.

I dont understand how people brake rods. it never happened to me. I mean, my St Croix rods has travel a long way from the factory to reach at my hands. I put Mojo Bass, Avid X, Avid Pearl, LTB to really agressive fishing condition, using 50 pound braid, hooking 10 to 16 pound fishes, throwing lures beyond the recommended weight, full drag tight, and no one broke.

Beside that, Im really carefully with my gear from home to the fish point and viceversa.

Am I a lucky guy?

My lucky ended yesterday. I bought the LBT68MXF in january, but never have the chance to use it. Well, yesterday I pick this rod and in the first bit when I set the hook the rod exploted in my hands.

d**n it. Get a G. Loomis imx pro or better and never look back. You'll be glad you did. St. Croix really needs to fix their rods. ugh.

Or just contact St Croix to get a replacement and never look at G Loomis. :)

I've yet to hear anyone have any issues with St. Croix's replacement warranty. I don't understand why somebody would buy something with a great warranty and customer service, and then not use them when they need to.

"Nah, let's post pics and complain on the interweb instead!"

btw I have 6 St. Croix rods, some for several years...no problems.

This is exactly what I was thinking after reading through the thread.

I have 2 higher end St Croix’s that both come with a 15 year warranty. That alone should be enough to have faith in the product. At least it is for me.

7’1 LBT MHF - casting

7’1 Victory MHF - spinning

I needed ALL IN ONE technique rods and these are both in that category of using multiple techniques.

Within the last 5 years or so I had a St Croix MOJO BASS casting rod. Because of the price point, it only had a 5 year warranty. I was fishing on a large wooden dock with some other people. Somehow, that rod ended up on the floor of the dock and one of my guides got stepped on and damaged.

I used the warranty option, got a really good trade in value for that rod and used that to upgrade to the Legend Bass Tournament rod. Super easy process and they mailed out my new rod. I was super excited for the rod but also, just the ease of the warranty process itself.

15 year warranties, come on, that should be a no brainer. I’m staying with St Croix’s. Plus the factory is only 4 hours North of where I live. Going to make it up there one day.

All my rods could break, I don’t care. Knowing I have a solid warranty in the back of my mind, makes me feel great. 👍

100%

I’ve broken 3 St Croix rods and they were all my fault. All rods out of warranty and I let St Croix know it was my fault as well and they had a new rod in my hand within a few days hassle free and customer service was incredible. The customer service alone has my business for life.

My kid broke my Mojo Bass Topwater rod when I let him use it and he snagged a weed. The drag was set fairly light, in short it shouldn't have broke but it did, but they sent me a new one under warranty.

My other kid broke his ML/XF spinning rod when he found a fallen tree and we didn't have anything to throw in the wood so he threw it around it, got a massive bass bite it and drag it around the wood. That one wasn't so surprising, but they sent us a new one under warranty still.

I also have a cuople St Croix, with zero problems. In fact, last month I found an old Rage and bought it with closed eyes.
Will this failure stop me from keep buying St Croix? No way.

I'm sure the warranty is great. But the point is that it would be better if you didn't have to use the warranty so often in the first place, ie that they didn't keep making rods that break so easily like their post pandemic offerings seem to. That's the point.

St. Croix has been around for about 60 years, I'm sure they will fix the issues with their rods, but they better do it quickly, their reputation is taking a hit big time.

Here's a good read:

https://tforodscom.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/tom-kirkman-rod-failure-rodmaker-magazine.pdf

It's so easy to damage a rod and not even notice. I think many failures that are blamed on manufacturing defects (from any manufacturer) could be traced back to external damage / mistreatment.

Broke a 7’ MF Mojo yesterday. Fish was in the boat, flopped and snap couple feet down. Broke a 6’8” Mojo MXF back when the Trigon rods came out. St Croix replaced it with a Trigon which is OK at best. A Trigon will be the replacement so I doubt I will make a claim.
