Boat winch quo

Featured Replies

I need a new winch and strap. My question is this, my research say that all I need is one that handles 1500lb. Ok I was looking at those and found some that are rated 2000lbs. I have a 2017 bass pro 175 tracker which weighs around 1200lbs to 1300ish lbs, at least in that range. Do you think that the 2000lb one would be overkill??? Anyway thanks for your help and have a good one

Yes I think it would.

No! Not overkill at all. I’m sure that a 1,500lb rating is probably stronger than the rating implies, but if you are winching a fully loaded boat along dry, or even wet bunks you are also working against friction. Apparently the winch you are replacing failed but you didn’t say why. Would a stronger winch have lasted longer?

@Scott F the winch that is on the trailer now is all rusted and beat up. Handle is all bent along with one of the bolts. I was on T-H marine and came across the 2000 lb one. And that’s why I was asking the question. Amazon has some 1500lbs on there so I thought I’d get some bassresources opinion. I always like to get some good advice from follow bass fishermen. Thanks again

I always go heavier. The winch hardware and strap are stronger giving you an extra cushion for little additional cost.

Your dry weight is 1050 with no motor. With motor and gear I think your 1200-1300 weight guess is low. I'm betting you don't have roller bunks. The 'be prepared' guy in me would go with the 2000lb.

I have a boat similar to yours. I have a Fulton 1600 lb winch on it. Works great but like most said, never hurts to go up. Check out the Fulton, they make great winches and jack stands.

I would go with the 2000lb winch. A little extra is always a good thing if needed and probably won't cost much more.

The heavier winch might have a lower gear ratio for less work when you're using it. Get the 2000 lb.

Thank you for all the advice. I went ahead and ordered the 2000lb one which was on sale. I just couldn’t resist, it was like $30ish cheaper. Again thanks for all the advice
