Zillion looking rough

Featured Replies

My JDM zillion started making some awful noises. I opened it up and found this mess. IMG_2944.jpegIMG_2943.jpeg

Looks to me like a shredded spring and chunks of o-ring. Ive never done the work on my reels, how big of a job will this be?

I can't help you fix it, but I sure what to know how the heck you broke it!

I honestly don’t know. My best guess is a hard season of use, probably using that reel itself for 10+ hours a week for 8 months. I didn’t baby it but I didn’t abuse it either.

It looks like pieces from the SV nylon outward-motion ramp (cam).

Easiest to see in this Ray's honeycomb spool.

You don't have to buy it here, but JapanTackle shows the parts:

https://japantackle.com/tuning-parts/spools-casting-reels/daiwa/tu002094.html

All the parts come with Ray's purple SV inductor, which is like $10 on Express website.

Ray's tapered inductor also improves the brake profile to make it closer to SV Boost.

A lot of people on TT forum swap Ray's inductor into their Zillion SV G1 spools.

Not cheap, but quickest answer is replace the spool

Thanks. Is that wire/spring I’m seeing also part of the cam? It is that part of the spool that broke the can broke? If you were to replace the would you get a direct replacement or an upgrade of some sort? I mainly use this reel for jigs 3/8-3/4oz + trailer.

the spring is what pulls the inductor back in from the magnets when the spool stops accelerating.

While it's the same idea as MagZ, everything in SV is lighter-weight, and was invented by KTF in Kahen BFS spool, and they let Daiwa copy it.

For that weight, I would use a MagZ spool, e.g., from Zillion HD.

You can always try MagZ spool and repair SV spool later to have the swap.

Thankyou! Where would you recommend buying from?

most of mine have come from Hedgehog Studio - they will add the import duty and give you a total with FedEx delivery - if you don't like it, cancel it.

Here's the same spool you have

Note, you don't need the purple-inductor MagZ-Boost - I would use it for over 1 oz.

The gold-inductor MagZ above is perfect for 1/4 oz to about 1-1/2 oz.

I swap spools from 18 Ryoga, 26 Ryoga, 21 Zillion, 22 Zillion HD, 23 Silver Wolf, 16 Steez

So the 18 mag z is cheaper than the same one ive got now? Will it hurt casting distance at all with a 1/2oz jig+ trailer for example?

Isn't that plastic piece sold on Aliexpress for like $5? It is disappointing that this can happen on SV spools. This issue is not a thing on mag v and mag z spools.

You can replace the ramp. Not the most difficult thing in the world, but getting those little c clips on and off the inductor without that spring shooting everywhere can be a bit tricky.

I definitely agree with the idea of getting a new spool to give yourself more options and then you can play find the spring later on.

(BTW, I hate those little clips. I used to have a Quantum Iron 300 back in the day where someone decided to mount the plate side bearing on the spool instead and mounted it behind an even more annoying, tinier c clip.)

Most people on the forum would say their MagZ out-distances SV casting 1/2-oz.

SV will cast 1/8 oz, which MagZ is not capable.

I used to be so annoyed about those c-clips as well. Now, a small jeweler's screwdriver and it's easily removed. My suffering days are over. You can also do this inside a plastic bag if you're worried about the spring or the c-clip flying away.

Unfortunately it looks like it will take up to a month for the new spool to get delivered. Seems like a perfect excuse to pick up a new reel so I’m not in a rush to fix that spool.

Now ive got to decide between another met 100 or my first ever bantam on my 7’2 H jig rod. The bantam is the only reel of the “big 4” (zillion, zillion HD, met, bantam) that I haven’t tried but I’m a little worried about it weighing 8oz.

@10,000 lakes Bassin The Bantam really doesn't feel as heavy as advertised being so compact, and on a slightly tip heavy rod it's amazing. I have mine on an Expride 77H and 72MHG and wouldn't want a lighter reel on either.

Those are useful tips. Another one is to tape the clip to a screwdriver when trying to get it back on the shaft when reassembling.

That’s exactly what I want to hear. This rod doubles for 6” line thrus, light frogging duty and pitching up to 1oz tungsten. Ive heard so many good things about that 22 bantam so I think I’ll finally give it a shot.

It’s also slightly tip heavy with a zillion SV TW on it, about to inches past the end of the lock nut.

I’d go bantam. I like my bantams more than my zillions. Have 5 bantams now and they balance out great that they don’t feel as heavy as you’d think they would.

Many setups are tip heavy these days. It's why I think any discussion of reel weight for a bass size reel is pretty silly. We've taken most of the weight out of the rear handle of the rod, most don't have foregrips, some barely have something you can call a reel seat. Then the standard rod length exceeds 7 feet, which isn't a bad thing but with so little weight in the rear now it's difficult to find a balanced rod with the weight of most modern reels.

To top it off, I think in many cases we're trading reel weight for durability. I love Zillions and the versatility of that platform and being able to customize them like we're discussing, but there are times I don't use them in favor of older, heavier, but more durable reels.

i got I bantam coming in the mail, and I’ll probably just try to fix the spool ive got now instead of buying a new one, thanks everyone.
