Upsizing my worm hooks

Featured Replies

Unless there is a huge difference in wire size, going up one hook size on a brand you already know is failing on you, is just asking for more failures and they may even increase in instances. I'd change brands in a heartbeat over trying to stay within a company.

Not necessarily - I’ve had a couple of the G Finesse straight shanks (1/0 size) break off right at the barb on 8lb line with a ML rod after getting snagged in grass.

I’m convinced it’s just impurities in the steel wire, not so much a Gamakatsu issue as it is a QC issue at the mill supplying them.

Cool story.

I think I just stress my hooks by catching scores of muscular bass in heavy cover. Each outing, I have to bend them back to their original shapes. We all know how bending stresses steel. I've ordered new Owner hooks, but being frugal, I'll also use my Gamakatsu hooks, simply replacing them after each outing until they're all gone.

The good news is that the Kid is back in Maine and we're fishing Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. @Lottabass sent him some wonderful lures and he's already caught bass with some of them by wading. The kid's dad is going too!

Oh, yeah, that'll do it. If an EWG opens up on me, it's getting trashed.

Hooks are cheap.

Ive used hundreds of those Gami EWG hooks and countless other styles of Gami and have never had one break. It took nearly 20 years to get 1 that was defective.

I had set the hook and gotten a couple feet of line in on a decent fish when she had just come unbuttoned. After getting my rig out of the water I was shocked to see the 3/0 EWG hook was just about straightened. I should have saved it, or at least taken a picture of it. I was using braid, but it was #10 on a 6'10 ML DS rod.

The rest of the 3/0 EWGs in the pack worked fine.

I guess the defective hook wasn't tempered properly or something.

I do a lot of jetty fishing. The tog, sheepshead and fluke hold tight to the rocks. You contact rocks every cast and hang up often.

There are some brands that have hooks that have reached parity in terms of sharpness when compared to Gamakatsu. Hayabusa, VMC and Owner all make outstanding products. Out of all the brands Ive used, Gami hooks hold their point significantly better than the rest.

When it comes to complete failure, breaking at the bend or shank, its usually one of several brands. VMC, Trokar, BKK, Mustad and a few others use a very hard steel. While that hard steel is great for maintaining a point and rigidity, it has drawbacks. Where some hooks can flex without sustaining damage, that harder thicker wire is brittle in comparison.

The Gami EWGs are made of a fairly light wire. That lighter wire has good penetration, is a little stealthier, the lightweight doesn't affect the sink rate or hinder action and allows you to use lighter gear if desired. 99.9% of those hooks will bend without breaking, so long as you fish it reasonable cover and or use an outfit that isn't too heavy. The Gami EWG is one of, if not the most popular hook on the market. That wouldn't be the case if they aren't great hooks. If you want to stick with Gami hooks, go with the slightly heavier wire G Lock or Superline EWGs.

When I used them extensively, I would bend the hook, so the point faces a couple degrees higher than the line tie. Sometimes I would bend the point a few degrees to the left or right, essentially making it a hook with a slightly offset point. You improve the hook up % by bending the point to the side slightly, but it also increases the chance of a gut hook.

If you want try a new hook, there are great options.

I was a bit perplexed at first regarding hooks breaking. After fishing for 55 years, I have only bent hooks and they were all treble hooks. The only hooks I’ve had break were bent and straightened by me. That practiced ended immediately. A bent hook is compromised and destined to break. I’ve had great success with Gamakatsu, Owner, Hyabusa, BKK, Varavis, and Decoy. I bought a reel from Digitaka two years ago and stocked up with Decoy’s at $2.22 per five pack. Just a thought.

I did buy multiple packs of Owner hooks, but after reading through this thread, I attribute the hooks breaking to user error. It's the bass bending my hooks and my straightening them and CONTINUING to use them. So, I'll just start retying when a hook is bent.

Times have changed.

Gamy EWG use to be the gold standard for soft plastics for many years.

I do like thin wire offset hooks for what we now call " finesse " worms 😁.

Probably have a lifetime supply of Gamagatsu, VMC and owner hooks and all have performed as expected.
