Brand New Revo SX BLOWS UP!!!!!

Featured Replies

This is not my week.  First my Loomis breaks, but replacement is on its way.

My new Revo was delivered last night.

I get up this morning and head out to our local tackle/boat dealer.

I pick out/buy a new Loomis IMX MBR843C for it.

I hand the clerk my NEW reel and a spool of line for him to spool for me.

He's almost done spooling it when this happens!!!!!!!!!!

I have never ever had a rod break on me and NEVER had a reel spread its spool before. Seen it happen to others but never me.  I fish lite tackle for Snook, Trout, Redfish, Tarpon, Kingfish, Dolphin, and of course Bass.  I learned at 6 yrs old how to throw a baitcaster and it was an ABU 5000.  Over the years I turned to Shimano(exclusively) until recently.  I bout a few Diawas (Zillion and Sol) but thought I'd try ABU again since they seem to have come a long way with the low profile Revo's.    No way this shoulda happened.  Unless the clerk had too much tension on the line machine while spooling the reel but then it was only #12 P-line and the line shoulda broke before the reel.

I guess I'm driving down to Bass Pro Shops Saturday and ask for a refund.  I doubt very seriously I'll get another Revo.  More than likely it will be another Shimano.

I may be wrong for saying this but I knew $149.00 seemed to cheap for a good/strong reel....

The store that lined it for me said they will replace it if BPS doesn't since it was in their possession when it broke. I kinda hope it was the persons fault who was putting line on it because I liked the way that reel felt in my hand and would consider another if it wasn't ABU's fault.

The Shimano Posse will love this post.....but since the guy said they'd replace it if BPS didnt, it sounds like operator error to me. Those winders can be cranked way up and when things get cranked up that fast, things happen, it could happen to ANY reel.

It wont stop me from buying more Revo's.

I like my Curado better then my Revo.

If I could have done it all over again, I woulda got 2 Curados. But the more I get used to the Revo, the better it feels.

Hopefully bps will give you your money back, and let you get a shimano.

Sorry to hear you had a bad week, I feel your pain man.

Fivebasslimit, I sure wanted to use it in  my tourny. I was looking forward to purchasing the Premier too. I kinda feel the same as you do about the guy who lined it for me.  I'm still venting but when I calm down I'll rethink it and probably get another for a 2nd chance.  I read too many good reviews on here about them for this to be a routine problem.

no pics for...hope you get refund from BPS

Be careful Bassn Blvd, these things usually come in 3s. By the way, would you be free to take my mother-in-law for a drive this weekend?

No picture for me either.

I've got 7 Revo's now, S, SX and SC models. Love all of them.

Last time I had BPS spool a reel for me, it was a spinning reel. They spun the line so badly that I had to pull it all off and re-spool it myself. I always spool my own reels.

The same thing happened to me with a SHIMANO baitcaster. That Sports Authority punk didnt have a clue what he was doing. I spool all of my own line now.

Bassn Blvd,

The store that lined it for me said they will replace it if BPS doesn't since it was in their possession when it broke. I kinda hope it was the persons fault who was putting line on it because I liked the way that reel felt in my hand and would consider another if it wasn't ABU's fault.
Need to learn how to resize your pics to half their size before posting... :(

It isn't Garcia' fault!!!

We had the same problems with the local Sportsman Warehouse employee spooling Quantum PTs with to much tension, and to high of a speed, and would blow out the lightweight ported spools. Finally got the word out to the local anglers that when they purchased a reel with such a lightweight spool to learn how to spool the reel their-self.

The problems stopped....

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

Don't give-up on the Revo. I have two and wouldn't trade either of them. It sounds like there was operator error to me. I've seen some of those guys spooling reels and I wouldn't let them re-spool my grand-daughter's Barbie reel.

Everything reelmechanic said is right. That's why I spool all my own reels.

Good luck, and give the Revo another chance.

The Shimano Posse will love this post.....

Nope...

This episode had nothing to do with the reel or the brand.

I'm sure the reel will be replaced and you will be a happy camper.

Good luck!

This is why i spool myself...when i go to cabela's to get a reel and line they ask me if i want it spooled free,i tell them nope. They seem to be mad when i tell them that....lol

Plus i enjoy spooling my own reels...I didn't know you could blow a reel out.

I use the cheap berkley spooling station you get for like $20...works great for me.haven't had a problem with it yet.

I still can't figure out what happened.  What is "blowing the spool" mean?  What exactly happened to this reel?

  • Super User

I wanna see pics ...blowing a spool is when the sides explode out some big spools of mono will explode on the plastic spool u buy from the store even i have even seen filler spools cracked

For those who couldn't see the pics, here you go.  Is there any decent close up shots?  Perhaps you can get a pic up close with the macro on?  It looks like the side plate wasn't in the grove when assembled, but hard to tell from the pics.

thanks yall looks salvagable though a new spool and sideplate all thats needed,if he takes it back thats cool but id like to see what ABU says and if they send him new parts ASAP without a cost to him !!!!!

I don't see it as Abu's or BPS's responsibility. I don't think they owe him anything for free. And there is no way in hell I would accept a repair job, either, on a brand new reel that has never been used.

I would expect the tackle shop to replace the reel with a brand new one - immediately (I mean WITHOUT DELAY). Their employee broke it. Not only should they replace the reel, they ought to give him a brand new replacement spool of line. They ought to also to keep that reel and mount it in some conspicuous spot to show employees what can happen when they spool line inappropriately.
