MegaBass lures worth the MegaPrice?

Recommended Posts

I might be getting a couple of these for Christmas and was wondering if they are worth the price.

They seem to be very well designed.  How do they compare to Lucky Craft and Rapala, since these are my two favorite brands?

they are beautiful creatively designed with impeccable detail.  That being said, I think are a bit fragile, they crack easily especially the pop-x. (the water jets in the head create very thin areas that are easily fractured)

The crank baits, while works of art don't catch anymore fish than a rapala, lucky craft etc.

I have tried alot of their baits over the past couple of years.  The pop-x and pop-max are great poppers. superior to most except the lubina rico.  The ito vision 110 is a dynamite rogue type jerk bait.

I bought the anthrax because I thought the idea was brilliant.  Problem is I can't catch anything with it.

I have their prop bait and big (?) walker.  Nothing special.

so my opinion is that the pop-max, and the vision 110 are superior baits.  Everything else like the griffon, deep x, cyclone, etc are good, but thier main value is to have smoething to show off with back at the dock.

cost is high, and you really dont want to lose a $20.00 lure to a snag, ect. Stick to rapala and lucky craft, but the version 110 is one of the best jerkbaits.

Like Avid said they are the best looking most detailed baits on the market.  I only fished two Megabass lures last year the Vision jerkbait and a jr something spook type bait. As for fish catching ability I did catch some on the walker but nothing to write home about and the Vision is a total flop for me. This winter I have purchased some other baits to try like the giant dog-x (which isn't that big), pop-x, etc. The bait I have the most hope for is the X-92 Edonis jerkbait (see link below)

Well i never have had the guts to buy a hardbait over $10. First of all, i KNOW i would lose it, and second, i dont use harbaits almost at all. Thats a goal of mine for next year. Now i watched a presentation by KVD, where he lectured on fishing with jerkbaits. He was digging through his tackle box and pulled out lures like wild shiners, husky jerks, rouges, bombers, rebels, and eventually got to his megabass. He looks at it and said, sure is the prettiest one in here, but in the water it isnt worth a flip.

I bought some a few years ago on Cabela's Bargin Cave for $19.95 of an original price of $35 used them and quite frankly I didn't catch any thing I used Rapala Shad Raps the same day and caught more fish. I sold them on Ebay for more money used then I paid new it seems that anglers in South America loved them because that's who bought them. Save your money as far as I'm concerned they are not worth it. Just my .02.

They are sweet looking baits, they just seem to scream collecter bait if you ask me. Lucky Craft pushes the bank for me enough, besides the colors, sizes, and design that goes into Lucky Craft is the best period.

the giant dog-x (which isn't that big)

Keep it on our terms!!  ;D  In Japan we frequently use Sammy 65s and 85s.... Sledom do we use 100s or 115s... so a 3.9in "Giant" Dog-X is in fact, still... Giant... In relative terms  ;)

The Griffon series catch fish by the truckloads, tons of fish but little fish, my only beef with Griffons is the size, it 's too small to be a good bait for bigger fish. If they manufactured and a larger size ( like 2 or 2 1/2 inches it would be another story  ).

The Vision 110 and the Flap Slap are killer jerkbaits.

The Bait X concept is one of the best Megabass baits IMHO, quickly gaining terrain in my list of favorite cranks. It catches fish when the Shad Rap doesn 't.

The Pop Max is my favorite popper.

The Type X is a wonderful shallow runner, but it doesn 't catch more fish than Rebel 's Wee Frog, like the Griffon, good numbers bait.

But still, what counts is what is behind the handle of the rod.

I have two PopMax that I have fished once and caught small bass on both. I don't really know if I will fish them again. They are BEAUTIFUL, true works of art. However, I consider them more of a "collectors item."

Absolutely not. They look beautiful but bass cant depict fine details like we do. They see a rough picture of every color in the color spectrum.

For example do you really think a MegaBass jerkbait will catch more than a LC Pointer or X-Rap?

If your answer was yes than good luck

I have only used the pop-max and love it- have not tried any of the other stuff.  I have not had a reason to try the other stuff- got the pop-max because it was proven- based upon the research I did.  Before I buy an exotic (expensive) hardbait- I make sure it has a good reputation, hence a reason to give it a shot- so yeah pop-max is good- plus it is pretty hard to loose a popper type lure I am not saying it can't be done- just highly unlikely...

I'd say there is no perfect lure for every body of water, every time and every fish. MB baits definitely have place in my tackle box. On many occasions Vision 110 and Griffon caught fish for me when nothing else worked. Last season I got several 6+lb SMB on V110, and Griffon sometimes makes even disturbed lockjaw bass bite.

On the other hand, there were days when silver $2 Renegade crank from WM can out fish any MB lure.

Megabass lures are indeed works or art...there isn't anything prettier or better made.  That said, Lucky Crafts as a whole just catch more fish, and it all boils down to Megabass being designed by artists (Mr. Ito), and Lucky Craft's are designed and developed through imput from their FLW and Elite series Pro Staff, and prototypes are actually fished by the tournament pro's who modify and influence the final design.
