If not Braid, what else is there?

Featured Replies

I've been pounding baits on braid for some time now and really like the non stretch factor for hook sets, but find it gets beat down in a hurry, other options besides braid that may have little to no stretch?

I fish a lot of clear lakes and never could get past the possibility of Braid being to visible. I used fluorocarbon to limit stretch and increase sensitivity. This is a possible alternative.

Many of our members tie a fluorocarbon leader to braid.

Best of both worlds? Fish Chris seems to think so.

Fireline.

Just started using it and really like it a lot.

Depending on the situation I use a fluorocarbon leader or P-Line's Floroclear.

What do you mean by your statement of "gets beat down" ?

seems to wear and fray, although most of my fishing is not rocky, I do tend to hit a few spots that include rocks...Im thinking a couple casts over rocks shouldnt kill it that fast.

Leader!

I fish braid on I believe 14 of my 16 setups. All but 3 of those I have leaders tied on ranging from 6lb - 25lb pline cxx .

Braid is great, I'm not sure what you mean about beat down, but I have the same braid on for a few months at a time without any problems, I just change the leaders.

Braid doesn 't do well when rubbed against rocks, the tournament guys from northeast Mexico learned that lesson the hard way when fishing tournaments down here in the canyon reservoirs in central Mexico where their 50-65 lb braid snapped on a regular basis.

You should have seen their faces when they saw us fishing with 6/8/10 lb test copoly or FC.

its like it frays alot...but I cant imagine a few casts over a few rocks will beat it up that bad..

Check your guides on the rod to make sure there are no cuts or chips. Rocks can fray braided line. This is because braided line is typically  thinner diameter it will feel the effects of sharp rocks much quicker than mono or FC in some situations.

Been fishing  braid many years on all my set ups 10/20 with leaders up to 40# depending on species.  Place I fish have lots of timber, rocks, coral and barnacles, even leaders get cut off there when you have a good fish on.  The braid shows no bad wear as described, I use PP as well.

I only use braid except where it's forbidden.

You only other option for no/low stretch is a fused superline. Those have less stretch than the braids. The downside of those is fraying is more evident with age/use. Fireline Fused is the only one I can think of.

Low/no stretch fluorocarbon line is a myth.

There's been a whole big thread on the stretch or lack there of for fluro.  It seems some good tests indicated that it had the same as mono for the most part.  That was a surprise to me as my 10# fluro seemed to have much better hooksets.

I'll never believe that fluro has the same sensitivity as mono. With fluro I can feel a worm touch a twig or a dink's kiss.

SammyLee, flurocarbon line does transmit vibration better than nylon mono because it is denser and thus more sensitive.

i fish deep diving cranks on fireline braid 65 /15 diameter over rocks all day without a retie.yes it frays slightly after a whole day but it never snaps!!!i walk the crank up and down the rocks with it.this is yet another area where i think it surpasses all other braids.

You show that box one more time,

and I'm switching back to PowerPro

I'm beginning to have a strong dis-like for that box also.

I dont believe for one second braid of equal diameter has less abrasion resistance than mono/copolys. After catchin 4 or 5 bass on baits where the lure is in the fish's mouth (causing the line to rub on their teeth) my hybrid and cxx need to be retied. With powerpro its not an issue. I fish the fall line on the james alot (the rivers 400 yards across and covered in rock) with cranks and have no issues with power pro. Mono on the other hand...

Look at how hard it is to cut braid versus other lines....The fact you can bite through mono with your teeth but need special scissors to cut the braid should tell ya something...

As far as I'm concerned based on years of on the water experience, this simply holds no weight with me.....

I like the BPS XPS in smaller sizes. The bigger sizes are very stiff and harder to cast!

I'll send you a clump of zebra mussels that says your wrong. :)

I wish they made braid scissors out of zebra mussels...
