I've got two older model quantum energys and really like them what do you guys think of this reel?

Oh man, another Quantum question, you may have opened a can of worms my friend.  That being said, Ive never used an energy, but I love my pt tour....

I have two, one older one newer and love them both!!

I had one given to me,  the 05 or 06 model I think.  I'll put it this way, it is a backup to a back up.  It is a smooth reel and looks really cool but i've never thrown a more finicky reel in my life.  I personally don't like reels with just a mag cast control.  I've taken this reel apart and professionally cleaned it and it still makes this chaffing noise when the cast control is even moderately turned up.  with a trap tied on and the cast control off, I can d**n near spool this reel though.  it's like I said just finicky and touchy when you go to anything lighter  than a half ounce.  these are only "my opinions" If you like em, roll with em

Another one of the  "Quantum Crew" here   ;D. The oldest Energy I have is a E640PT I have for my deep diving cranks. I have several Energy PT's in the E750PT and E770PT series as well. Love them all!

Barroncooper, the noise comes from the ACS system. It's a centrifugal system, not magnetic. You can easily quiet it down, smooth it out, and make less finicky to adjust.

Simply remove the brake race from the reel and polish it using a dremel, small felt wheel and extra fine polishing compound. Work slowly around the circumference until it shines like a mirror. Takes about ten minutes. Good thing to doo while the bearings are soaking. Scrub it clean with some Dawn and dry it well. Put a drop of oil on a swab and wipe it down.

When you get it back together it will be smooth, quiet and consistent.

I did this to all 6 PT reels I had. Made them all a lot better.

I've gradually replaced these with Daiwa reels, sold a couple, gave away a couple and traded one. Got one 770 left, and should probably sell it. I don't use it.

Good reels for the price, and much better after this simple polish job.

I am a fan of it. mine is 2-3 yrs old. Used it for a lot of pitching this year so now as much time with long casts

pretty cool little trick.  makes sense though.  I always thought they were magnetic i guess the position of the beveled race depending on where it is limits how far the weights extend when the spool turns.  doesn't seem like a very good system to me.  seems like added friction.

I'm a Quantum fan also and have one of last years models and like it enough to consider getting this years model.

I have 2 of the older gold colored Energy's

and they still work fine as heavy bait outfits.

I can cast a 5/8 oz frog a mile on 50lb. braid.

Yeah, its not the smoothest but it's comfortable and works.

Had an old one for cranks and liked it.  Have a new Burner and like it as well.  The new ones are very comfortable and even though the old ones we a bit tall, they are too.  The new ones are a big improvement and I hope they keep getting better

I too am Quantum fan. I have an Energy 861, it is my go to reel. I am in the process of upgrading the bearings, not because of any particular problem, the reel just seems to be a little "slower" now than when it was new, which I guess is expected after more than four yrs. of use.
