How many of you use brakes on your baitcasters whether it's magnetic or centrifugal? I keep on at least 4 weights (quantum accurist. Freespool/4/6/8) which is the minimum before freespool. Am i just slow to use freespool or what?

I usually have two brakes on. Gives me just enough control to whip out a lure without having the spool overspinning and causing line to bunch up. I'll adjust my magnetic brakes to counteract any wind. On my flipping/pitching rod I'll turn off all of the brakes.  A lot will also depend on the weight and type of lure being used.  I can toss a 3/8 t-rig a lot easier a longer distance than I can a 3/8 spinnerbait.  The way the lure flies in the air will have a significant factor in how you tune your reel.

I usually use 3 or 4 myself ...I don't care much for the magnetic controls. I can't cast effeciently with the brakes off. Some folks say they can ...good for them , just ask how many backlashes they pick out each trip.

i use one or two brakes on my citica depending on wind.

I generally use three. With three I can set the spool control fairly loose and still maintain good control. I then can make adjustments to the spool control and add magnetic braking if needed.

I've never messed with the internals of my reel (i don't think mine has the removable stuff you speak of) but I have my brakes set from 7 to 10 almost all the time. I turned them off before and didn't cast any further than I did having them on, so I just keep them on for insurance

I always make certain on new reels that the lighter weights are in the reel, and then I set two of them on, four off.  With reels that I'm typically using more wind resistant baits, I may set three or four.  Just depends on the situation.  I'm not beyond changing them on the water, either.  I'm not too proud to say I need em.

I use the 4 setting.

I usually have 2 breakes set and adjust the spool tension or mag setting depending on what type of day I'm having.

from wobbling, basically "off".

Spool tension on the Castaic, and Chronarch is set to almost nada..

I use all Revo S's.  Each has only one brake on.  If I am pitching and feel I need more distance I will turn them all off.  Occasionally if I am forced to be fishing into the wind, I will turn two brakes on.  I set the spool tension so there is no side to side wobble.

Two on, four off. I do have a Quantum Catalyst that I removed some of the brake tabs. Now instead of 3, 6, or 9 brakes I have 1,2 or 3.

Centrifugal:  1 or 2 on, 5 or 4 off, respectively.

I have a couple of magnetic only reels - no clue what I use on them, I just play it by ear.

Daiwa Zillions:  settings between 5-7

My Revo is an '09 with mag only. Most of my adjustment is done with the cast control knob. I rarely go above 30% with the mag brake, most of the time it's at about 20%. Depends on the bait and wind.

Flip/Pitch - None.

Everything else Two on four off- No mag. Spool tension none.

Although I will admit I was being cocky about my casting skills one day fishing with my dad and bet him $1 I could cast with no brakes-spool tension. Needless to say he won a dollar, but only by a small "Professional Overrun" 8-)

2 brakes on w/ stock bearing and 4 Breaks on with ABEC 7 in Core 100MG.

I prefer the Daiwa magforce v or z systems.  I have them set to between 3 and 4 usually.  More if using a lighter bait, or casting intot he wind.  Spool tension is adjusted according to the specific lure I am using and dropweight.

My casts are typically like the cracking of a whip, so I prefer centrifugal. Dual braking is nice on windy days, though.

I use BPS Pro Qualifiers with dual braking most of the time.  I only use the mag brakes on windy days and distance is not an issue for me. Dumb or not, I like it.
