Another vote for Daiwa Exceler. One of my favorite reels and most used. I also have a Bionic Plus BPS reel that gets the job done for the money.

This thread needs new life. The reel that I have been the most impressed with lately is the H2O Xpress Mettle reel from Academy Sports. Put some reel grips on mine and they run competition with my Citicas as to which goes for a boat ride. Check them out here.

Six-pin centrifugal braking that resembles the Citica's, 10 bearings, casts a mile with light lures and I've had very minimal backlashes. Quiet and smooth.

Whatever you buy, get one that is a saltwater reel or at least saltwater approved.  Not only does the salt environment take it's toll but the strength of ocean fish puts a lot of stress on your equipment.

Will this be used for inshore fishing with artificial or a bait set up.  Offshore, pier or beach?  What is your target species and how big is the average fish?  How long do you want this reel to last?

I would pay more attention to these factors than to name a specific brand.  Any cheap reel will be fine for awhile.........

I would suggest keeping an eye on our Flea Market and

picking up a Citica.

And now at 35 bones, it 's a no brainer deal.

The most inexpensive will be the two Revo S's I bought new for $67.97 each. They are not cheap but were very inexpensive. The other would be the Revo SX for 109.97

copy that, before mine flew off the boat in 30 ft of water, i considered it the best within my arsenal

I've been eyeballing that one. I take it you like it?

It's a smooth, reliable reel that's been around for quite a while now.

FWIW, it's also known as the Procaster 6+1. A quick Google search will turn up a ton of info.

Agreed, hands down. Had one for years and it's doing well! Of the newer models at retail, the Daiwa Exceler would get my vote.

Quantum Bill Dance Select Baitcasting Combo... I know it's not JUST a reel, but for $49.99 (mine was $60 when I bought it) it's the best rod AND reel I have used. Perfect for all around use and it can take a beating.

How about the Abu C3 4600? $80 and lasts forever.  Nothing but the fashion police says a casting reel has to be low profile.

Quantum Iron IR3 from 1990s. $40, still lives.

true. i have one of those and am using it for cranking.. lol.. im like the third owner and it feels like new. lol.

i have one to got it for free and it needed a littlw work but all i did was oil and grease it up and its fine for slop fishi ng and swimbaits

  • Super User

would it be out of line if i said used Daiwa Fuego?

Daiwa Exceler or Cabelas Prodigy

I hate to tell you this, but Daiwa makes the Exceler-- not quantum.

Thanks for catchin my mistake

...and today TW dropped the price on the Daiwa Procaster to $29.99  :)

Think about this, I fish with TDZs, Pixies, Alphas, Chronarchs n 'such I think it 's a great reel, it was a great 70 dollars reel, at $30 is a no brainer deal.

Pflueger President

Shimano Sedona

The BPS Pro Qualifier in baitcast, and the Pflueger President spinning reels are really good, inexpensive choices IMO.

Daiwa Strikeforce.  They don't suck.

At $89.99 the Shimano Caenan CAE100 destined to become a legend

At $99.99 the Shimano Cardiff CDF100A is already a legend
