If you could only have 3 rod and reel combos..

Featured Replies

Right now, being a college student, money is a little tight for me. I love fishing but it can definitely get a little expensive. I'm trying to put together 3 different set ups to use for a while, until I have more money to spend fishing. Right now I currently own a 7' medium Berkley Lightnight Rod, a Quantum KVD 7.0:1 baitcasting reel, and a Bass Pro Shops Extreme 5.4:1 Baitcasting reel. I plan on buying 2 more rods (one for the BPS Extreme reel) and one more baitcaster. I'd like to use my existing gear. What kind of setups should I use? What should I use the Lightning rod for? I was going to use the BPS Extreme 5.4:1 paired with a crankin' stick and maybe use the KVD reel for a pitching/flipping setup. What would you guys do?

I was thinking about making a cranking setup, a flipping setup, and a worm setup.

I think your on the right track. Here in California Id also want a spinning rod.

I forgot to mention that I also have a Medium Light browning 7'6" paired with a Mitchell Avocet II Gold Series spinning reel (cheap) that I've been using for small stream and river fishing for smallmouth.

3 most used rigs out of 20 or so.

AVC68MXF/Alphas/10# CXX

LTBC70MF/Zillion/12# CXX

AVS63MLXF/CI4/6or 4# InvisX

most of my fish are caught on three rigs.

mhm...cbr785/steez 100

mhf.....mbr783 glx/steez 103

mhxf...bcr803 glx/steez 103

I do! At least for bass. I fish MD and PA, so here's what I use.

1. Baitcaster on a 6'6" M XF rod. (Ardent xs1000 on All Star Platinum, 15 lb Siege).

2. Baitcaster on a 7' XH XF rod. (Daiwa Coastal on Fenwick HMX, 50lb braid)

3. Spinning reel on 7 M spinning rod. (Saros 3000 on Compre, 10 lb Elite)

I'd use your Lightning rod for cranking because you dont need much sensitivity, I would spend most of my money on my worm/plastics rod as you need sensitivity for that. I would get a decent priced flippin/pitchin stick. Also BPS Pro Qualifiers are probably the best reels you can get for $100 or less on sale

id put the 5.4:1 on the lightning rod for cranks.

the 7:1 will make a good jig/plastics reel.

like mentioned above, use more sensitive rods for bottom baits.

id look at the st. croix avid series rods. check out the replacement policy.

Thats a good point about replacement policies. I know St.Croix has a good one and so Does SHIMANO. I know if you snap a shimano just about any authorized dealer will let you trade for exact same one. A Crucial is a good choice for a few dollars less than the Avid.

The 3 I use the most:

1) St Croix Avid 6'6" M, Revo STX w/12 lb P-line Premium for jerkbaits, topwater, lipless, shallow cranks, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits

2) Dobyns 703SF, Daiwa Tierra 2500 w/ 8 lb Trilene Floro for dropshots, shakey head, split-shot rigs, small crankbaits and small scrounger heads

3) Dobyns 683c, Revo Premier w/ 15 lb Trilene Floro for weightless plastics, light t-rigs/jigs, spinnerbaits

These are mine:

G. Loomis GLX MBR 844C/ Core 50MG/ PP 50/12 for jigs,

But could be used for all single hook classes (buzzbaits,

weighted soft plastics, spinnerbaits, light swimbaits, etc.)

PR844C/ Core 100MG/ Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12 for treble hook lures

St. Croix ES70MF for weightless soft plastics

I was thinking about putting the 5.4:1 on a glass rod or a BPS Crankin' stick because I feel like the lightning rods is pullin the cranks outta the fish's mouth. Maybe its just been me. I feel like the graphite lighning rod has too stiff of a tip.

Brent, if you are interested, I have a couple of rods that would suit your purposes, very reasonable.

Shoot me a PM if interested.

great idea. i hear those bps sticks are excellent for the price.

make sure you handle a glass rod before you buy it (if youve never fished one). some people love them but the one i tried seemed a bit too heavy for a weight weenie like me.

Very true about the older glass rods. The newer stuff is amazing when compared. I think its Lamiglas that makes a orangish crankin rod thats glass. Its pretty darn light and goes for about $80.

How much is it to ship a rod?

Here's the deal, I'm not trying to sell you a rod but I have a BPS crankin stick that is a few years old now that I really haven't used much at all.  It's a 7' model in I believe M power I'll have to double check.  I don't know how expensive it is to ship but well, Christmas is right around the corner.  Why don't you PM me after someone gives a price on shipping a rod and we'll talk about your Christmas present from an absolute stranger... k?

Dtack, PM sent.

Actually, that's all I pretty much use, is 3 different setups. Granted I have a few of each.

But anyway...

1) (and maybe my favorite :P) would be my little G-Loomis 6ft, 1-4lb, SR720's, with a 1000 series reel, loaded with 2/10 micro-braid.

2) A medium-light to medium action spinning rod 6 1/2ft, 6-15lb, with a 2000 series reel, loaded with 30 lb braid.

3) A heavy action spinning rod, 7ft, with a 3500 series reel, loaded with 50 lb braid.

These three setups cover me for all the different baits and lures I fish.

Note, they are all spinning. Not because I think spinning is so superior to bait casters, but mainly because I am absolutely the worst at casting with a baitcaster. Hand-eye thing. Long story. No amount of practice could ever fix it.

Peace,

Fish
