Thanks. It made me feel better for having such a hard time finding it at that depth is all I meant. I wonder what's going on with the grass. Carp? Hope not.

In order for me to explain finding the grass we must return to the 15' plus or minus 3'.

Hydrilla, Coontail Moss, Eurasian Milfoil, Hay Grass, or any other types of grass grow at a certain depth and more importantly stop growing at a certain. On average the depth at which grass stops growing is 12-18', this establishes the outside grass line and is the first break line of a grass flat.

When we goto our map or any web site about Toledo Bend the listed "full pool/flood stage is 172', but the reality is "normal" pool level is 168-169'.

During the fall/winter of 2014 the lake level was 168-169' but by the spring of 2015 the lake level was at 173.5'. This 4.5-5.5' rise in lake level means that 12-18' depth during the fall/winter is now 16.5-23.5' during the spring when the grass was starting to grow. Since we know the grass can not grow at those depths we have an overall change in size and shape of the grass flats and how far out from the bank the grass is located.

Confused now! ;)

Had 30lbs today and my dad had 14lbs in our club tournament. Our best 5 combined was 33lbs. I had 3 fish between 7- 10lbs jump off. My big fish i caught was 9.5lbs.  Lots of tournaments coming up, but

  • Well two days in & only 3 fish ?   But one was tagged BassCashBash which I was registered in, it won me a 2019 Dodge Ram!

I thought it would be appropriate to bump this thread after hearing the bad news of @Catt's passing.  I don't fish Toledo Bend but this is a very interesting read for anyone.  I know Tommy took a lot

So is my interpretation of your explanation to expect grass in 7-13 feet correct?  This would support what JJ said about abundant shallow grass.

Correction:  8.5-14.5 @170' level

No my explanation is due to winter temperatures which killled grass & spring's high water levels stopping it from growing back do not expect to find grass like you did last year!

Thanks Catt Daddy! Makes perfect sense to me :)

Kinda quiet in here.  Its been a month since my last trip.  Once I get the new house squared away I'll get back up there.  Never fished there much in the winter but I think this is the year.

I'm still waiting for a new lower unit to be put on my boat. Hopefully I get it this week!

I'll be back after teal season. Hope to see y'all there!

Stayed at Wildwood this weekend and Toledo ate my lunch I also donated a marker buoy so if you want one let me know and I can tell you where it is.

That lake humbles the best of us ;)

KVD has never finished in the top 25 on the Big Pond!

Wow!! This thread is unbelievable. Mr.Tommy, the time and effort all you guys have put in will be deeply appreciated.  I am going to begin studying immediately. I was introduced to TB by my parents early in life. Always loved the place and plan to retire there one day, no time soon.  Earlier this spring, my wife & I decided to purchase a boat and do a little fishing since our seven year old is coming of age.  Well here I am 6 months later, and all I've caught is a bad case of the fever.  Not really, we've been on some fish a few times.  I watched my 21 year old son put on a frog clinic one evening at the mouth of Patroon and watched my 7 year old catch a nice 2 lb. schooler on the community hole with a fluke.  It took him approximately 30 minutes to figure out how to set the hook properly, but it was worth every second.  I had a DD at the boat till she spit the rattletrap back at me.  My dad always told me while referring to TB, "It will humble the best of fishermen."  Well, I now understand perfectly!!  He and I are going up to Big Bass on Friday for our 2nd trip together this year, it will be good to sit back and watch him get serious again.  I have talked to a couple people who say the bass are schooling.  Hopefully, we get on a few.  I want to thank you for your time and efforts.

Sincerely, J Chaumont

Mr. Chaumont, (yes I know how to pronouce it)

First Welcome ;)

Second your post is why I started this thread!

I've been fishing the Atf. Basin and catching some shrimp for the freezer.

I'll be back in oct..

The lake seems to be dropping fast !! Down At the camp this weekend and the fishing has been so so. Catching them early on humps and a couple of points on a football jig and a couple on a spoon. Caught some nice ones in the 5lb range with a couple of 3s mixed in. Just not as many bites as I was hoping. Now some yard work and may fish a little while in the morning.

Bryan,

Thanks for the report. Flutter spoons or slab spoons? You're more than welcome to do my yard next!! Haha

I have had better luck on slab spoons. Today was a different story. All my fish came on a crank bait. Caught about 20 with most being 3 to 4 lbs. I guess this front had them eating. Stumbled up on these fish . Found a hump that is not on any map I know of. Probably some fish that haven't been molested. Lol

I was able to fish Saturday and Sunday morning. Caught 19 total with biggest being four pounds. Most were caught on points slowly retrieving a XCalibur rattle bait in shad color. A few flipping a green pumkin speed craw up around hay grass.

Question on humps. I have tried fishing plenty of humps with little success. What do you guys look for in a hump? Does it have to be near a crrek channel or the river? Or will just any hump have the potential to hold fish due to it being a change of depth from the rest of the surrounding water?

My 2 cents on humps is the fish have to have a reason to be there. The most obvious reason to my simple mind is some structure that leads to deeper water.  While I have caught a fish or 2 off of isolated humps the majority of the fish I catch on humps is where the hump connects in some way to deeper water.  Also, seldom are the nicer fish on top of the hump for me, unless it is matted with grass and they are buried up.  A matted hump with a good grass edge and dropping into a 25' or so channel makes me make some casts.  They won't be on every one.   I'm no expert but that's what I have found. Better minds will be along shortly to help you out.

I agree with jcdogfish. Humps that have deep water access are better. A hump that is in the middle of a flat may hold some fish, but i look for humps that have a creek swinging close by.

I also agree the best humps I have found seem to always relate to a creek channel. I have found that there are usually larger schools of fish that are found on humps close to a migratory route.

Late report from Monday. That cool weather was nice while it lasted. Had a decent topwater bite. Stayed on the south side near the state park. 15 fish before the sun came out completely. Here's the biggest fish of the morning. Not the 30 fish days I've been reading about on the joslin reports but all on topwater was a blast. Went back out Tuesday morning but only got 10 on topwater with the biggest being 3lbs.

Keep in mind productive humps do not have to be very big!

I hnow several right in the middle of boat lanes, they get ran over every day but seldom fished!

Great reports guys!

I might sneak up next Tuesday ;)

I have my HnL map, thanks Lake Charles Tackle!  Let the studying begin...  Is it appropriate to ask questions related to past post? I'm starting back in 2008.

Welcome ;)

Wally World has the maps!

Yes ask any question ya like!

Well then I'll with Lowe's Creek which is when it all began some 36 years ago

Looking at your map find the mouth of Lowe's Creek, next look to the south and you will find Millionaire Point. You should also see a hump marked 22' a little to the east of the point with the creek passing to the north side of both the point and the hump.

Next look south from Millionaire Point and you will see a 22' ridge running down across the boat lane and stopping at Cypress Slash; it short distance from there still heading south is another hump.

Notice Lowe's creek and the Sabine River channel in relation to the point, hump, ridge, and island? You want to position the boat on the side of the point, hump, ridge, and 2nd hump closest to the channels.

Next look at the words Oilwell Cove; look under the letters ve in the word cove and what do we see? That's right an underwater point in 22' foot of water that is near a creek and river channel intersection.

Mr. Tommy

You wrote, "...start deep and stay deep.." when discussing the above areas.  I would position myself near the first shallow break (yes I'm reading structure 101 lesson also) and fish both sides.  With the understanding, the hungry bass come up from their deep confines to the shallows (depth of shallows dependent on area) to feed.  Would that be a correct statement?  The deepest I would feel comfortable casting is around 15-16'.  Your statement makes me think you are going much deeper.  How deep is a bass' habitat?
