I think I am getting the hang of Allen Pond;

Caught on a Jackall Squad Minnow.  I was honestly just seeing how my BFS rod would handle it and was just casting aimlessly out to the middle of the pond. 

Got this one on a dropshot.  It fought a ton harder than the larger one above, I didn't notice the scale was set to ounces at first and thought I had caught a real monster.  

Anybody fish the severn river near smiths marina area?

I have once, but it is too far to paddle my kayak and I hate paying $20 to launch at Smiths's.  Round Bay is a great spot for white perch and stripers when they are around.  

They charged you 20 dollars to launch a kayak? They charged me 10 dollars for 2 kayaks.

Wow...the 70's! The lake looks pretty good if it's that old. I haven't tried fishing on the water yet, but the kids who work the dock rental site say most of the big bass are on the opposite side that's inaccessible from the trail.

I think they recently dredged that lake as it was filling in with sediment (not the first time they have to to dredge). I just looked online and Lake Whetstone opened for boating and fishing in September 1967. I used to catch bass over at "Lake Walker" too (they built Lakeforest Mall on that land and all that is left of Walker are those 3 ponds around the mall).

They did 3-ish years ago.  I guess I need to give them an other look.  They said the price was due to their limited parking, which is understandable I guess.  

I have managed to beat my Allen Pond PB twice in one day, with the final fish almost a pound over my old record.  

If I ever see again the random dude who got me to try drop shotting I might run up and hug him.

I know the dropshot is the bees knees. 

Took my son and a buddy out on the Upper Chesapeake/Susquehanna on Friday since it was nice out and he was itching to fish.  We hit the tide wrong but actually caught a few.  Used a technique and bait I learned from @ww2farmer up in NY and actually caught a few SM!  

Took a long sweaty hike to get to a stretch of the Potomac I wanted to fish. Fishing was slow but I managed two decent fish near a feeder creek. The inflowing water was noticeably more stained than the main river and the fish were holding along the mud line.

 

My biggest smallmouth from the Potomac, 17 inches.  Previous best was 16 (twice), but everyone could use another inch.  Caught on a swimbait.

A few weeks ago I had some work in DC and as I passed around the river I noticed lots of grass mats in the area. Decided to finally go down there and fish them today. Fished a frog for 2 hours, missed one massive blowup. Found a large gap in a mat and noticed multiple large snakehead periodically surfacing to breathe. They would not hit the frog, so I switched to a swimbait. Watched one at around 10lbs follow and slurp it in. Alas I either set the hook too soon or the fish spat the bait just in time. No action for the rest of the day.

Anyone fish Gunners Lake in Germantown?  I went there Saturday and got skunked. The water is crystal clear, but it's full of vegetation...stalks of green hair algae along the shoreline. I tried a weedless Keitech swimbait, and got nothing. I threw it beyond the vegetation, and swam it over the grass, then let it sink into any pockets hoping to pick up something. I walked around the whole lake and saw one spot next to the bank with a deep hole and saw a decent sized bass, but it was not interested in the Keitech, which is all I had with me that day. I'm going to try a weedless horny toad next time, but it doesn't look like there's much top water action in that lake.

 

Hit up Lake Whetstone on Sunday with the kids. I managed a 1.5lber pretty quick after throwing near a laydown. It took my line before I could even start reeling in any slack. The water there was pretty low and stained.

 

Been to Gunners a couple times since I only lived a couple minutes from there. Have never done any good there, only caught a few dinks. Always looks like it should be decent but I stopped bothering.

It looks really good doesn't it....I think it's because there's so much forage available. I saw hundreds of bluegill in all parts of the lake, even up into the creek that runs off from the homes.

 

I'll probably give it a few more tries with horny toads, senkos, and maybe some punch jigs. 

So it is trout stocking season and I have been hitting some ponds right after they have been stocked with a trout colored Hudd 68.  I have gotten a single hit (totally blew the hookset) and a couple very promising looking followers.  

 

I also caught a DNR officer!  I had one come charging up to me, he had seen the lure and thought I had caught a trout and was live-lining it.  As soon as he got up close he saw it was a lure.  He apologized and asked to take a look at it.  The guy thought it was the funniest thing ever, he ever asked to take a picture of it to send to his friend.  I guess if you don't fish they do look kinda silly.  I only wish I had the Hippy Rat with me, I think I would have broken the guy's mind.  

Got 3 at elkhorn the other night.

Big baits were not getting it done, but tiny popper saved the day.  

 

Hit up Centennial Lake today, my first time there. I saw the DNR had stocked trout there a couple weeks ago, and I was dropping off my car to get fixed in the area so I figured I kill time while waiting for the car shop.

 

I had never been there, but based on some older reports, it seemed like the riprap near the "east" side of the lake was where most people caught stuff. I was using white salmon egg power bait, and caught nothing on that. But I was throwing around a silver Mepps XD for bass but caught a trout over in the cove to the left of the rocks. I saw a bunch of juvenile bass and bluegill, but couldn't get any bigger bass to bite on a variety of lures (chatterbaits, jerkbaits, Keitechs, rattletraps).

 

It's a very nice lake and I'll be back to check out the far side of the lake next time.

Had a really good week fishing jerkbaits and blade baits in the C&O canal and potomac river. I've gained a ton of confidence in blade baits in particular. They've been catching all kinds of species.

Small walleye caught jigging a blade bait in the canal. Never seen one of these in the canal before.

 

2lb smallie fishing a jerkbait with a slow steady retrieve.

 

Biggest fish of my life, PB blue cat at 42lbs caught jigging a blade bait for smallies/walleye. Fought for 10 minutes on my bass gear, was surprised my rod held up. No wonder the target fish weren't around.

Widewater area?  That's a nice clean blue cat! Way different looking that the ones pulled out of the Potomac, south of DC...nice pics!

Yep, widewater. There are some giants there. The blue cat I'm pretty sure was blind. You can see how the eye in the picture is clouded up. The other eye was completely gone. Doesn't seem to have bothered the fish at all.
