basser89
Ok MD! Our turn to step! As a couple of you may remember, we had a pretty active thread going before the last site upgrade. Unfortunately, some of the threads were deleted and could not be recovered and the MD thread was one of them. As for me, I'm live in Williamsport and work in Germantown. I obviously fish the upper Potomac for smallies and get to fish Little Seneca Creek (Black Hills) which is my lunch time spot when weather permits! I also fish Cunningham Falls, Greenbrier, Big Pool and Blairs Valley and several ponds around the area too. Now that the cooler weather has hit, you'll find me from time to time fishing the power plants in Williamsport and Dickerson. I also cross the Mason Dixon line to fish a few places in south central PA (but that's for another thread!), LOL! I do a fair amount of fishing from shore but I do have a jon boat that I have set up mostly for electric only lakes. The "old" thread wasn't only a place to introduce yourself but a place to trade info too! Alrighty then MD! Who's next?
RockvilleMDAngler
I live in Rockville and work in DC. I bought a 1998 Skeeter SS90 in July so I have been fishing the tidal river almost exclusively since then. I still like to hit up Black Hills and Triadelphia in the spring and my bass club has tournaments in places like Lake Anna, Deep Creek Lake, Lake Gaston and the Upper Bay. When I head out to fish from shore I usually target the lakelands ponds, Clopper Lake, Gunners Lake, Dickerson plant, and Lake Frank. Super User BrianinMD Posted November 25, 2008 Super User Share Posted November 25, 2008 I live and work in Germantown. Most of my fishing at Black Hills. I do also hit the potomac and monocacy in the area. Bought my first boat, a 14 ft jon this year so spent time trying to learn things away from the bank. Never tried to heated waters, may have to take a walk around Dickerson see if I can find some spots...
MskSlyr
My family and I live in Westminster and I work in Germantown with Basser89. I fish the Upper Potomac for smallies, walleye, and muskie as much as feasible. I also fish a lot of lakes and ponds in Washington, Frederick, Baltimore counties for a multitude of species. In addition I dabble with fishing the Chesapeake and its tributaries for Stripers and Largemouth.
c17Lat
I'm in PG county, and fish out of a 2 man ocean kayak ambush, fishing the upper potomac for smallmouth and mattawoman creek and piscataway creek on the lower potomac. I also did one BFL and a couple of club tournaments on the upper bay and potomac last summer. I'm away in college right on Cayuga Lake in NY so i really only fish in MD during the summer. MDbassinmike
I live in West Friendship and spend a lot of time on Triadelphia. I bought a BassTracker TX17 this summer and have enjoyed learning the lake from a new vantage point. I would love to hook up with someone to learn the Potomac (especially warm water discharge areas). My favorite baits right now are jig/pig and shakeyhead, and if it ain't green...I ain't throwing it.

basser89
MDbassinmike, The only two warm water areas that I know of in MD are in Williamsport (Washington county) and Dickerson (Montgomery county). They'd be a little bit of a hike for you. The only one I've hit lately has been the one in Dickerson. The levels have been pretty low so far and I've only managed a few dinks smallies there so far. I wish we'd get enough rain to bring the levels up about 2', that would really help that area out! I did manage a decent largemouth out of the C&O canal down there. Bad Fish, Are you fishing Liberty from shore or a boat? I put my boat on Liberty once and found out the hard way that you need a special permit to put a boat on there. Found out from DNR as I was coming off the lake. Luckily, he was pretty cool about it and let me go without a citation. If you don't know, or to others that might not be aware, once you have that permit you're restricted in the waters you can use your boat because of the zebra muscles. MDbassinmike
Basser89 Supposedly there is a warm water discharge somewhere near the airport on the Potomac. I have only been in Maryland for two years and have only had a boat for a few months, so I am very interested in learning the Potomac. I have no idea where it is safe to put my boat in and where it isn't. I read about different areas, but all the lingo is typically in local language (like "I fished Dam 1" or "I fished around so and so island."). Not being from around here and not knowing the river, I have no idea where some of these areas are and how to get there. I would need Road Numbers and directions, not locations on the river. That is why I would be interested in going with (or taking) someone who knows more about the river than I do. Thanks for the information you gave me though. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense tagging along with someone. Since I had my outboard stolen almost 2 years ago, my boat is primarily set up for electric only lakes but there are a couple of spots in Washington county where the current isn't too bad and I can put my boat in there. I do have to monitor the current flows though. MskSlyr and I put my boat on one time in the spring and I hadn't checked the levels for a while. We killed my primary battery, used up my backup and ended up having to use my accessory battery to make it back the last 100 yards to get back to the ramp. This might help you some. http://mddnr.chesapeakebay.net/fish/state2.html It's a boat ramp atlas for MD that's on the DNR site. Just click on the county and it will give you a listing of the ramps for that county. Glad I could help you out!
basser89
Just thought I'd throw this out there. The Maryland Fishing Expo is scheduled for January 8th through the 11th, 2009 in Timonium, MD at the State Fair grounds. The only big name pro that I saw on the seminar schedule was Peter T. I think it is called Blue Plains and is part of the tidal Potomac? Since you are new to the area the Potomac is broken into two parts gemerally. The Lower which is Tidal and mostly LM and the Upper which is non-tidal and mostly SM. The dividing line is great falls as far as I know? The Dam numbers start at 1 and go west up to #6 or something like that. I only fish around Dams #4 and 5 and maybe 3 so I do not know about 1 or2. Allen Thanks Allen...I should be able to make some progress with all this information. I just don't want to tear up my lower unit, so I need to know where the river starts to get too shallow for a prop. One question I have is...If I fish in the tidal portion of the river do I need a different license? I thought that I read somewhere that if you fish in DC area that you need a DC license. brian_82
Any one fish amateur tournaments? I am really interested in some info on what I would need to do to be a non boater and start doing some tournament fishing. For the most part I just fish local ponds from the bank. I do, but technically its for another thread. I fish a small series on a lake in south central PA. There used to be a big bass format tournament at Black Hills but its been a few years since I've heard anything about that and a couple more years since I've fished it. Usually the answer to this question is "You need to spend more time on the water..." but honestly the Potomac is huge and can take a lifetime to master. In the last two years I went from knowing absolutely nothing to being pretty competent. I spent a lot of time on the water and fished a lot of tournaments but I also read two books (and continue to refer to them often) which helped immensly: -Fishing the Upper Potomac River by Ken Penrod -The Tidal Potomac River Fishing Bible by Ken Penrod both available here: http://www.penrodsguides.com/books.htm They are definitely worth the price and are invaluable resources for river anglers. Soon you will be familiar with every spot on the river and will ALWAYS have a new area to try.

Check the MD BASS site for clubs local to you? I can tell you that you will have to re-learn a lot about bass fishing. In a pond there is only a limited amount of space for the fish to go? Now Deep Creek Lake you really have to find them. Fishing in a local club as a non-boater is a good place to start just don't get with a crowd that takes it too seriously? dave
From a bass boat on the lower Potomac River. I have been attending the Bass Expo since it was the "3rd annual". Back then there were a good deal of "big name" pros. Now as you will see, maybe one or two. Mainly just local guides. (whom you can still learn a lot from) Still not a terrible place to spend the day in January.

basser89
Has anyone been out lately? I made it out 2 weekends ago for a while. I tried hitting PEPCO but unfortunately, the levels were still high and the water was still rather muddy! Needless to say, I blanked. The weekend before that, MskSlyr and I had my boat out on the Potomac on one of our regular spots. Weather was about brutal and I only managed one hit. The short fight felt like a smallie but it came unbuttoned before I could see it. Hopefully, with the Christmas break coming up, I'll be able to wet some line before its time to get a new license! Super User BrianinMD Posted December 22, 2008 Super User Share Posted December 22, 2008 Haven't been out at all, between work schedule and weather things haven't worked out. If a decent day works out hoping to check out the heated water at Dickerson, never been there so no idea were the workable spots are. But I am going to Tennessee for a week after christmas so it will have to be in the new year. Happy Holidays everyone!!
basser89
Hey Brian, I know what you mean! Work's been crazy for me too! I'm off from the 25th through Jan 4th! I'm hoping to make it there at least one day! If you've never been there, the parking lot is kinda tricky to find! Here's a map of how to get to the turn off for the parking from Dickerson. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl At the end point on the map, you'll make a right. If you zoom in a little, you'll see the parking lot basically to the left of the marker. Park there and it's about a 5-10 minute walk up to the discharge area itself. As far as I know, the canal you walk up by is not heated but there are some decent largemouths in there! I pulled a 4 pounder out of there at the end of last month. If the discharge area is insanely crowded or you're not getting any action, give the canal a shot if its not iced over!
MDbassinmike
I plan on going the day after Christmas. It is supposed to warm up a little (50 on Christmas Day). Hopefully it will be good on the 26th.
