I have never seen the Little Pax at flood levels, the falls above the dam are pretty low. No idea how strong a swimmer snakeheads are.

Weekday fishing is the best, but working most weekends/frequenst travel makes it hard to see friends and family.  I think throughout my 30's I managed to attend only a single friend's wedding out of a dozen I was invited too. 

 

 

Howdy.  I am semi-new to the area (New Market) and on the hunt for some small calm place to take my 5 yo daughter.  She has some anxiety issues, so I am hesitant to take her popular places.  Is there somewhere in the new market/mt airy/FRE vicinity that has a small pond with bluegills (that is good enough to keep her attention a bit)?  Something simple with a dock or cut grass would be great.  Just thought I would check.

I go thru New Market everyday on my way to work.

 

Off the top of my head I would suggest Cunningham Falls State Park. May think of more as later that I will add.

Hey Chatterface.  Nice, wave as your go by next time :).  I like it out there, but my commute down to College Park is getting to be a bit tough sometimes.

 

That seems like a nice place.  A little further out than I would like (just to keep her interested out there, fish, and way back), but it might be the best bet (at least for nice quiet places).

There are no "good" commutes around here, better to live somewhere you like and get some books on tape for the drive.  

 

 

Need advise on baits to pack for Wayson's Corner in Upper Marlboro.  My job is taking me there tomorrow.  Just looking to fish about 30 min to an hour.

Mostly guys there are going for white perch or catfish it seems.  No one ever really talks about bass in the Pax, but honestly I have never really tried.  

 

Have you been there before?  The pier is tiny and any bank access requires walking under the bridge and along the usually-muddy shoreline.  The water in front of the pier is like the snaggyest spot in the world I think.  If I ever get into casting jigs I am gonna take a snaghook tied to like 1/4" amsteel and drag out a lifetime supply of lead bank sinkers.

I've goose-egg'ed a handful of times.  I have seen some eerily elongated silhuoettes by the rock bank next to the pier.  It could be a bowfin but with milky muddy waters the last few outings, I think the darker snakehead would stand out much more.

Ah, now that had not occurred to me.  That little marsh right above it would be great habitat for them.  It's only really fishable via kayak or canoe too I think, might have to give it an afternoon this summer.

That Bentz Pond looks pretty neat, thanks for the heads up.

 

If the weather can hold, I think I am going to try to take her SAT morning down to Warfields Pond Park.  Not sure if it is any good, but it is close (we are travelling later in the day), and it has a small playground if the fish aren't biting :).

A buddy and I want to rock happening at Harpers Ferry a few weekends from now, but we will not be able to make it up there until around 10-1030 in the morning. Only parking spots I know of only hold a few cars each, anyone willing to give me a suggestion on where else we could stash our cars for the day?  We don't mind a bit of a walk, a mile or so wouldn't be out of the question.

Anyway to bring bikes?  Park on Keep Tryst Road in Weverton and go up the canal trail.

Actually my friend suggested bikes, but he has 2-part rods and I wanted to bring my 6'8" bfs rod along.  Is the parking by Lock 31?  I have to say, the river looks good there as well.  

 

Potoma Wayside Park on the VA side looks promising as well.  I assume if our feet are wet we are good with MD licenses?

Yes parking is right there next to the train tracks.  Basically everyone parks on the shoulder of Keep Tryst Road.

 

And you can be standing in Virginia or West Virginia and fish the Potomac with a Maryland license:

Well, took the daughter out SAT to that pond. It is well maintained, but only 3 spots to fish from. She ended up catching a box turtle (that was a first for me), an 8in small mouth, and a big sunfish. All in all a nice morning, but kind of a dead pond I think (mostly because I was skunked ).

I'm just getting back into bass fishing after a couple of years away from the hobby. We moved from the Midwest to Maryland back in 2015 and I'm just now scoping out some freshwater spots to drop a line. Last weekend, I stopped at Walking Fish Pond over in Crofton and didn't come away with anything. One little bump and that was about it over two hours of poking around over there. Any other suggestions in the Crofton/Odenton/Bowie/Annapolis area?

 

I saw a guy on another forum recommend Blue Heron Pond over in the Patuxent Research Refuge. Thought I might take a hike over there next weekend to scope that out.

I bought a bike for that pond alone.  It's like fishing a private farm pond.  Have fun.

Nice!! I have to admit that the thought crossed my mind. Is that like a three mile walk from the entrance? That's pretty much what I'm seeing here. Never been over...

It's roughly 2.25 for the shorter route and close to 3 the safer route; low gear is your best friend.

 

I only caught dinks (2lb'er at most) but I wasn't running slow techniques.  I'm sure you can pull 5'ers out of there, but I'd make at least knee high wading boots to get some prime casts in.

I have never made it to Blue Heron, but have caught in the other ponds in the North Track.  Some morning in the next week or two I am going to be there at 8am and make the hike.   

Do you guys have any input on fishing for smallmouth in the Little Patuxent? I read somewhere that there's a pretty good pool up near the Old Savage Mill. Really trying to stake out a few spots that I can fish from land until I can find room for a kayak.
