That's one big shad.  I didn't know that got that big, either.

I didn't either, but she's a bute!  What kind of bait did you use and what was the fight like?

Wow that is crazy

She must have put off 10 pounds of lubricant slime.

Now that is the bait needed to break Perry's record. But where do you find a bobber for that thing?????? ;)

A high quality beach ball would probably do the trick. ;)

And just think how many times that shad had to escape the jaws of death over the years to get that big.

Hm, would they count that as a game fish?

IGFA keeps record for American Shad but not other shad species I believe. Guys fish for American Shad when they run in the Chesapeake Bay tributaries. I guess in that regard it could be a "gamefish", but I don't know if there is any universally accepted definition for the word.

These are the world records for shad:

American Shad        11lbs 4oz        Bob Thibodo        Conn. River, S. Hadley, MA        May 19, 1986

Gizzard Shad        4lbs 6oz        Mike Berg        Lake Michigan, IN        March 2, 1996

Wow! I didn't realize that they got that big either. I have caught some in cast nets back in the day that I would guess to be a couple pounds maybe. Nothing even close to that!

wow thats huge!...I see 2 and 3 lb shad feeding all the time in one part of the river I fish...I thought they were smallmouth at first!!

WOW!!! A couple years ago I caught a shad that weighed about 2.5# in my canal and I thought I had "Orca The Killer Shad", but after seeing that picture I guess mine was just a punk.
