The Current BR Poll on the Home Page

Recommended Posts

72% prefer largemouth, 23% smallmouth. What was surprising to me was that the percentage voting for spots was so small and that sand bass got a vote!

I like green bass, but whenever I have the option, I will always fish for smallmouth.

I think it's simply a matter of demographics.

If SM were as plentiful, in as many areas, as LM are, surely this poll would read differently.

Smallmouth when I can get to them...LM any other time.

Yeah, I'd LOVE to catch smallmouths but they just don't live down here in Florida.

I would imagine that the largemouth won by such a wide margin based on their wide distribution

and also because they're the largest of the three.

Smallmouth are gorgeous fish, and as many times as I've seen those two elephants that RW is hoisting, they still rock me back!

The smallie is also a faster swimmer and a higher jumper than the bigmouth. Many bigmouths can't even get out of the water,

they just hold their head above the water-line and rattle their gills, it's kind of humorous. But in favor of the largemouth bass,

the quick-tapering snout of the bronzeback is just not as awe-inspiring as the huge bucketmouth of a largemouth bass, IMO.

As far as bass go, I'll fish for whatever species happens to be bitin' at the time. But...if all them are bitin' and I have a choice...

1. Smallmouth (never caught one and from everything I have heard I really would like too.)

2. Largemouth

3. Spotted

4. Stripers

Those are the species that I am aware of in and around MO.

I'll take smallmouth over largemouth any time. There just aren't that many places in central Illinois to find smallies. I'll take pike over either. My pike fishing is a trip or two up north every year.

I will take Striper over either one of them.  More fight plus striper get a lot bigger.

I'm with RW 100% and I also believe that LBH hit it right on the head with his analogy. Myself, I voted for smallmouth but I pursue largemouth and spotted bass as well. I'm blessed to have an abundance of all three species in my area and over the years I've learned to be grateful for each and every strike, regardless of size or the particular species.

Smallies and Largemouths and that's pretty much it ;D

Every now and then crappie, but not "often" by any means.

I love smallie fishing but unfortunately I have to take long trips for them.  I voted smallies but fish more for largies.
