JERKBAITS!!

Featured Replies

I just came down with jerkbait fever after my last successful trip with a new Xrap and now I am wondering what great jerkbaits I have been missing out  on all along.  So, what are your favorite--can't live without--jerkbaits?  I need to expand my collection!!

My favorite hard bait is a Smithwick Suspending Rogue.

They really don't produce as many fish as other techniques but I sure like fishing them! X Raps and Rogues...

I love the x-raps, but I must say that my favorite jerkbait is one of the walmart 1.99 brand ones with holes cut in the top the plastic bb's removed and new bb's put in (resealed after of course).  I get the greatest casting distance from these and I can have gammy hooks on them and still own them for less money than x-raps or one of the expensive brands.

x rap is great lure to use, thats better then rogues. I bought the limited rogues before and never caught one fish on them. Junk!

I have heard that other lures will usually produce better, but since I have started throwing hard jerkbaits, they have been out producing everything else.  I can't argue with that.  Any other jerkbaits that people love?

rapala glass husky jerk. caught my biggest fish on it fall of 07. an 8lb hybrid. needless to say i didnt go hungry that night. ;D

Lucky Craft Pointer > Xcrap

You just can't beat prespawn jerkbaiting.

Lucky Craft Pointer 100 (Baby Bass) most of the time

Rapala Husky Jerk HJ08 (Silver & Blue/Orange belly) some of the time

X-Rap XR08 (Glass Ghost) when the fish are very active

Suspending jerkbaits should be fished with some combination of a

jerk-jerk-pause. The pause should be on slack line so that the lure

is not pulled forward. Sometimes the pause is short, sometimes long,

but always complete.

Rapala calls their X-Rap a "slash bait". It is generally fished fast,

usually without any pause. This lure imitates a frenzied fish trying

to escape, other jerkbaits are more subtle.

Jackall's Squad Minnow 95SP is my favorite.  It is very similar in looks and profile to the LC Pointer 100 SP.  But it is somewhat different in that it does not have shifting weights.  So the LC will cast a bit better.  But the Jackall's weight system seems to bring it to a stop much quicker in the water than the LC.  When you jerk it, it doesn't drift to a stop near as much as the LC.   You can achieve a real stop-and-go with this Jackall.  It gives it a more realistic look in the water.   This is a bait where it really does what the manufacturer says it will do.

I still am hung on the Rapala F's.  Just fish them as jerks.

I prefer to have an arsenal of jerkbaits, there are several good ones out there and each seems to have characteristics which will enable to be the best tool for the job on any given day. In addition to some of the ones already mentioned I was very impressed with the Ima Flit and the HMKL suspending K-1 minnow. Both of these baits seem to have a more triangular shaped cross section that allows the baits to have more roll, this is an excellent trigger. The Ima cast a little better and suspends a little deeper than the HMKL, however there are times when fishing weed flats later in the spring when I don't want the bait running as deep. Though the Pointer gets more recognition don't overlook the Lucky Craft Flash minnow, I've had some great days with this bait. Regarding colors you need some transluscent colors like Ghost minnow, Matted colors & Charteuse shad for cloudy days and reflective flashy colors like the LC American shad & Aurors Blue. I'm real interested in picking some of their baits in the new Skeets Magic, looks like it will be a killer. I've also been hearing good things about the Spro Mcstick though I haven't tried it yet.

Pointers. Little pricey.

Don't forget old standard Rogues and Long A's

i have never fished jerk baits before. how do you fish them.. just so happens i bought one silver and one gold XRAP i think the depth is 8-12ft.. i could be off but is it as simple as jerk jerk pause, jerk jerk pause--perhaps changing it up some?

I forgot about the Ima Flit.  Probably because I haven't caught anything on them yet.  But they sure do look good in the water.  I have high hopes for them.
