How to find out the moon phase

Recommended Posts

Is there anywhere I can go to find out the moon phase on March 18th?  If anyone wants to do the work for me they can just look and my feelings won't be hurt.

Full moon is on March 10th.

You know it is best to fish week before and a day after the full moon.

But who cares?

Just go out and do some fishing for all of us who are freezing our fannies off this winter.  ;D

Lunar affects on all living plants and animals is a topic of great debate and discussion, several books have been written on this topic.

Most bass fishermen will agree that the full moon affects the spawning period.

IMO lunar cycles have a major affect on bass activity year around; with the 3 days before and after both the new and full moon periods being good for bass fishing, depending on the seansonal period. Keep in mind any day on the water is a good day, some days are better than others.

So a watch is the easiest way to tell i guess

Btech,

The cool thing about the Casio that I have is you actually enter your latitude and longitude (or the spot you're planning on fishing) to get the most accurate number you can. Once you have it entered, a couple clicks of a button and you can look ahead to see where the moon phase will be whenever in the future. Pretty cool little feature (IMO).

Good information provided already, but I read something a while back that made a lot of sense - too me anyway - in regards to the full moon.

That was that during a full moon, there is (obviously) more light.  So nocturnal creatures get more active as they can see better during this period - leading up to the full moon and after.  This leads to more things - insects, birds, rodents, etc. - falling into and going into the water more often.

Being that there is more light on the surface, bass and other predatory fish, can make out images quicker and easier and are more likely to attack than just on sound alonse.  With more activity on the surface, they go on a feeding frenzy and get use to the heightened activity and feed much more aggressively.

I'll be honest, the only times I check is when I'm night fishing, and after a particularly good day.  I have never made any correlation, though I think I'd really need a much bigger dataset.  I have a friend that has more than 5 years of fishing logs stored in a database, with over a dozen fields tracked FOR EVERY FISH HE'S CAUGHT!  It wouldn't be too hard to build a report that would overlay moon phase with this data.  Now, if I could only get at the data :)
