Or should I say ALWAY'S smell's rotten in there I just would like to know how the gas price's have affected your bass fishing trip's or outing's, for me I just go to a lot of smaller lake's now, if I go to a bigger lake I go to one I know so I don't waste more fuel, I still go but am more careful where and how far!! Yeah I'm with you on this one. The oil companies are taking us all for a ride. It seems like companies use to spread the wealth a little but no more. The greed is ruining this country. And of course our politicians are apparently in their pockets since no one is doing anything about it. I think we need the truckers all around the country to completely shut down the interstates which would then shut down the whole country. Until then, the greedy idiots will continue to fill their pockets. As far as my fishing goes, it will stop me from going very far to fish. I will have to stay local to save money like a lot of other guys. Thanks for listening to my rant.

Let's assume that the "big oil" companies reduced their profit to a break even number on a gallon of gasoline. How much would that save you at the pump? Unless you know the answer to that you are all excoriating the oil companies without having a clue.

As they say "@$! runs downhill". Those companies aren't going to feel the increase in input costs, they just pass it down to the consumer. That's how it works with everything we buy.

You're right. You'd only save a few cents per gallon. Big Oil is not gouging us, although they make an easy scapegoat. State gas taxes account for another $.40 - .50 per gallon and the federal tax is about $.25 a gallon, give or take. That still leaves about $3 a gallon.

When they keep posting record profits somebody is getting the short end of the stick. Any guesses?

Who are the people that make money when oil prices go up?

1. The people who own the wells. This includes Big Oil and some Countries.

2. The people/governments who lease their oil rights for a % of oil pumped.

3. The hedge fund managers and others who dabble in the commodity market.

4. The people who invest money in those hedge funds or with others.

BTW many pension fund managers dabble with your retirement dollars in the commodity markets, so when oil prices go up, your pension's value can also go up.

Everyone, please read the bold quote above over and over....Generally, oil companies cannot control the entire oil market..Sure they might have a few traders that can be major players in the Commodity Market, but they cannot influence the entire market. Too many variables beyond their control is influencing the price. I own a company that explores and extracts natural gas and oil and they spend millions on derivatives in event the markets for natural gas and oil suddenly drop. If the company can influence the price of oil, why spend millions and billions of derivatives to hedge themselves from drop in price? Which is why I cannot rationally believe that a CEO can hire a few traders and influence the ENTIRE supply of oil which is priced in U.S. dollars and is used around the world in many products. Because of the latter, the demand is more than just U.S. drivers. Other countries and companies using crude oil in their products (other than refining it for gas) helps contribute to higher price.

Just few things worth mentioning.

Root Beer, thanks for a very salient reply, and thanks for catching my typo. The odd's are pretty high that I will make the same mistake again.

Prices at the pump in many other countries is higher than it is here and many of those countries are trying to do something about it. They may not be able to bring the price down but they are trying to develop alternates. Israel for example has developed a system with some type of apparatus that is installed underneath roads to pull the energy from moving cars, this energy powers homes.

The oil companies buy up patents and leave them on the shelf, ones that can produce a 100 or more miles per gallon.

What actually is foreign oil? We import most of our oil from Canada, then Mexico, with Saudi Arabia taking up the 3 rd spot. IMO the oil companies may able produce what we need without buying from other countries, don't forget our oil companies sell on the world market too. It is either cheaper to buy it than extract our own or it's a matter of hording and not wanting to ever run out.....I dunno.

How do I deal with it? I take my saltwater boat out less and less right now. To fill up the tank at the price I paid today would be roughly $520. I just can't afford to do that as much anymore. Now mind you, how much fuel I burn all depends on the type of fishing I go out to do. A light day of fishing is still going to burn around a half a tank of gas though.

I find myself fishing out of my jon boat with a couple of TM's on the private lakes around the house here. It's far cheaper and just as much fun. The only difference is I don't eat what I catch when I go bass fishing. If I'm hitting the salt, something will be going into the box and getting put on the grill that night.
