New Rod For Dad

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I was out last night on the lake and landed a 7 pounder and snapped my dads prized rod at the same time.... I feel bad about it, he has been using this rod for 10+ years. It is a panfish rod he used for the thrill of bringing in the fish. I feel obligated to buy him a new one and need some opinions on a rod since i have never purchased one before. We usually fish for bass only in northern ohio, mainly carolina rigged worms, spinners, and occasional top water jig. Can anybody give me a couple suggestion for a new rod to buy him that meets some of that criteria, remember he has used a panfish rod all these years for being able to really feel the fish fight.

Thanks,

Justin

What brand was your fathers rod and/or what dollar amount are you willing to spend?

I would say a St. Croix Avid AVS70MF, unless he wants another UL.

He will be very impressed with the sensitivity.

If you want to get your dad a quality rod which will have the power to fish for bass in a lighter action, take a look at the St. Croix Eyecon line of rods. My dad is the same way and when he handled one of these rods at a local show, he just had to have it. He got it to fish for crappies, but he now regularly uses it for bass fishing.

Take a look at the ECS70MLF. This is the St. Croix Eyecon spinning rod, 7' medium-light fast action. If he isn't in to the split grip, take a look at the Premier Spinning rod of the same length, power, and action. Both rods use the same blank. If you really want to step up and get him something special, go with the Avid, AVS70MLF.

Good luck.

Whets

I have a 6'6" ML St. Croix Premier rod. I have landed tons of large fish with it. And it won't break you pocket for around 100.

Alright i narrowed it down to the avid, mojo bass, and legend xtreme. I am still open to suggestions and i am probably going to purchase a rod and reel for myself too while iam out. He is using a spinning reel so if you guys have any suggestions out of those series iam open to listen. I will probably follow him up with the same rod but i need some suggestions on the reel, no baitcasting here.

Custom is the way to go IMO. You get exactly what you want and none of what you don't.

Great advice so far. I think that is super awesome what you want to do for your father! Please keep us posted!

I lost my father over 20 years ago when I was young and wish I was able to repay him back on a nice rod.

I am sorry to hear that. Some of my best memories from childhood was when he brought me out fishing. He introduced me to the sport and now i find it as something i can go out and take my mind off everything. I dont mind buying my dad something nice that he will appreciate. I feel it is well overdue with everything both of my parents have done for me over the years.

There sweet man. I have it paired with a Daiwa Sol 2500. I absolutely love it.
