My favorite for the Rage Shad is 4/0 EWG heavy line hook. You will find that the 5/0 hook point is entering 1/8" too far back and into the tail. Some like it that way though. For the Rage Toad, 5/0 EWG works great. Big O www.ragetail.com

Hawghunter, Pls. take this as a word from the "Old and Regretful". Over the many yrs I have been blessed to be able to catch many larger fish than I deserved to, I am truly regretful for having mounted the fish that I have. Granted, those were the days when there was no such thing as replicas but since that time I have kicked myself many times over for the past. I am sure that I am speaking for many of our older long time fisherman as well. Now days with replicas being so prevalent and the fact that they last longer, require less maintenance etc. Stands to GOOD reason, that is the correct choice. Besides that, a picture can be displayed anywhere and anytime with as much or more enthusiasm and leaves you with the best memory of all, she lived on to tell the story to her many offspring of the time when this guy named Hawghunter ........ Please don't use these keel weighted hooks on the Rage Tail Shad and run it like a swimbait! And neither do you want to Carolina rig this same set up and swim it deep over the ledges and humps or on the end or along edges of moss beds. I don't want anyone getting one of their expensive rods jerked out of their hands or straining themselves like pulling a muscle trying to land a bigger fish or more fish than they are use to. ;D ;D ;D Seriously, I have been using them just like this for a long time with great success. Let'em load up on it before you set on 'em. Remember, it is soft plastic and they like to mouth it which gives you time to hit the fish, unlike hard wire buzz baits. If you are in open, might try a trailer hook Too, shad still runs fine. Big O

Wallyboy, Sometimes top water racket like you are referring to with a buzzbait style actually calls fish in to a particular area. I think they are inquisitive to see what the commotion is all about and possibly relate the noise to a feeding frenzy etc. This has been proven many times and is extremely prevalent in South America with Peacock bass fishing as they will come from a distance to ck out the racket or to see if other smaller fish are moving in on their territory. Since larger fish (bass) are more territorial, it makes your comment valid on getting slammed by a large fish after repeated casts in a given area. Many of us old guys have experienced this same situation before and maybe many of us are not as patient when we are in a boat to see this result. I would follow Bobby's advice and move after 10 minutes or so. Big O www.ragetail.com

Wrangler, I too agree with your basic color chart info. I keep colors basic depending on the day and water conditions. I try to focus more on style/bait selection, location and presentation. www.ragetail.com

Hey Crzy, You're on the right track and getting good info all around. Just be patient with yourself and the fish until both of you figure out what is going on. First stay with some basic green pumpkin color schemes as that is a favorite all around color everywhere. Concentrate on staying in contact with the bottom, this will slow you down and also try to visualize what your bait is doing when you make short hops and drags. With this type of constant vigil on the jig presentation, you will not only feel the fish bite better but more importantly you will understand, "why the fish bit" better. On trailers, I want some type of swim or flapping action even with minimal movement of the rod tip because it has been proven that the slightest flip of the jig or swimming action of the trailer can generate the strike from a finicky fish. Jig n Big, Go to my website or SK web site and review the hooking instsructional video. Also like Brian mentioned use 4//0 EWG hook and I like a heavy wire hook as well. On a slower to med retrieve with the shad, it should wobble and flop back and forth, but when you increase your retrieve speed, then the tail will start slapping back and forth and making more noise. On the Shad, I like the 4/0 EWG heavy wire hook best of all and get better hook up ratio on it than 3/0. If you're doing fine with the 3/0 then keep on with it. Big O www.ragetail.com

You're right Glenn, a very thoughtful group of folks here and as you often refer to this as home and family, that it is-that it is.

If your lake is facing Carp overpopulating, and it sounds that it could be, I think you will have alot of fun arrowing them but it will be hard to make a real impact unless you and friends do it on a regular basis. It is hard to control a perfect balance of vegetation and fish life in any given body of water. But I applaud your efforts in trying and have fun doing it. Big O www.ragetail.com
