If you ck the lake record charts, latest reviews and fishing results on your area lakes, you will get some good info on where to start your quest for improving your average size catch. Main advice is to move away from the shorelines and start concentrating on structure that is a bit further out, like 75 to 100 yards to start with. After you get comfortable with that zone which might take a year or so, then move out to mid lake structures on a regular basis. You will find that there are as many or more fish to be caught far from the banks and much larger fish on an average. Hopefully you have a boat or tube fishing set up that will make the first step achievable. If so, gitt'r done and be safe doin it. Big O

I agree with Skillet, Use a line with very little stretch if any and after load up-slam'em. Keep your line tight and if they are trying to come up on you, lower rod tip and slow retrieve slightly unless your in the sticks. The key is the hook set, many folks slap their chest on the hook set but when possible, I am a fan of sweeping the rod to the side as you cover a much greater distance with your rod can usually provide better hook set. I think Rage Tail is coming out with a lizard this Summer and I think that all of the legs flap and kick on the fall rigged with 1/4 oz weight or with minimal movement on a Carolina rig. I think that it's tail flips back and forth like a dog wagging his tail. I think I like it. I think I wasn't telling the whole truth !! Daniel, I am fortunate to live in one of the best areas of the country for chasing big fish. Many of our fisheries are heavily stocked and maintained so it gives us a better than average chance to be more successful. I don't have the luxury that you do in the variety of species so it is a trade off to some extent. Also all of our lakes here in Texas with the exception of one (Caddo Lake) are man made resevoirs and extremely similar in structure types. This allows us to reproduce patterns from on body of water to the next with good results. Would I change it, NO! I am too old to change. Big O

There are no slumps in HAWG HUNTING, only extended times between HAWGS. This style of fishing is definitely not for the weak hearted or impatient fisherman but more for confident and persistent souls. This is a learned behavior and has tremendous upsides. Once you are confident in your locations and bait or style choice of fishing, it is only a matter of time before you realize your goal. Your thought process begins to eliminate the many possibilities of less productive BIG fish water and your patience builds so that you are able to slow down and concentrate on every pebble, stick, log, piece of grass or moss. Be patient and start fishing off shore a bit more than you are use to. Find the first drops, ledges and deeper points with sharp depth changes and concentrate on these. This style of fishing is productive year around and hold as many catchable fish as any other types of structure, plus they are easier areas to find on most bodys of water. Use Tx rigged soft plastics, Carolina rig, Jig and Craw trailer and deeper running crank baits in natural shad colors. They move out a bit deeper to the drop offs and hold there for a short amount of time before getting back to their normal patterns. That is where I concentrate my efforts with the most success. Using deep cranks, jig and craw, Carolina rig etc. Big O www.ragetail.com

Welcome aboard Primus. If I am fishing topwater at night, I'll stay on a Dark colored Rage Tail Shad all night long. Key to this bait at night is let the fish load up on it, and they will. Since it is a small soft plastic bait, immediately after the hit, the fish will mouth it for plenty of time to let you set the hook.
