Agree with you Finatic, if I lose a soft plastic in the water or a fish shakes it off during the tussel, I will search for it diligently till found and retrieve it. Many of my clients thought that I was sure going to a lot of trouble just to retrieve a torn up bait, until I would mention this very problem. Been trying to keep the burned up baits in the boat for many yrs but I know I lost some of 'em. This would be a good thread to start up on a regular basis for conservation reasons. I elect you. Kayak is tough, position, position, position. Good hook set with soft plastics requires to the side or over shoulder sweeps for best results and you will have to maintain the boat position in reference to the structure fished to get it done correctly. Good fishin Big O www.ragetail.com

Last year, my grandson and I were fishing on a hot sultry day and there was absolutely no wind. We were in 25 ft of water jigging a timber ledge and the boat eased up on a submerged stump. Garry, finicky fish are finicky fish and the water clarity doesn't always change their feeding habits, especially in heavily fished waters. Your point is well taken and you are correct in using big vibes first in these situations. But some fish don't necessarily have to have big vibrations when water is really murky and can become a bit panicky since they can't see anything at all and have to rely completely on other senses to navigate as well as avoid danger. I have also noticed that deep water big fish usually are not bothered by muddy water near as much as smaller ones in shallower water... Big O www.ragetail.com

Yes, this is the school of thought and is proven every time we land a fish from deeper water that is not crystal clear. Most of the time we are fishing clear and shallow, the fish are rich in color but as the suns rays are blocked more from cloudy water etc. their color pales out somewhat. The longer a fish stays in completely shaded areas, the lighter he gets. Right on! Big O www.ragetail.com

Years ago, during a guide trip, one of my clients and I were just getting into the boat and he held up a little plastic black bird that had some treble hooks hand tied to it's neck and tail with mono and asked seriously, "Are you a good enough guide to find me some bass to catch on my bait", I smiled and replied, "Not sure I can do that but I bet I'm a good enough guide to find some baits that you can catch some bass on". One of my favorite Bud's is not the best fisherman around and nor is he very handy with a baitcasting reel and when he gets one of those serious backlashes, he yells "Beer Break". Buddy of mine used the same Turtle back worms on Tx coast with some success as well, til he spilled the bucket in the bottom og the boat. He's not too happy about that. On Shakey heads might try the Elaztech worms produced by SKLCo. They are high floaters and can be used over and over. Extremely durable. I don't fish Shakey heads much, but I know many pro's that do (not just SK) and they all swear by them. Big O www.ragetail.com

Take a break from your cold weather and water situation John, and come on down here to good ole Texas lakes for a change. We are starting to gin on the topwater activity now and could use your help "Feeding all these fish top water baits". Yes I have used the salad spoon before and it is definitely a quiet bait compared to Rage Shad. Rage Shad isn't a floating plastic but stays on top at extremely slow retrieves and wobbling action increases as retrieve speed decreases. Has a slow fall rate sitting still. Even with heavier swimbait hooks the Shad will run on top just fine and it adds variety to the sound and action recieved. The Shad is adjustable or tuneable as well, kinda like tuning a buzzbait or spinnerbait. To make it quieter, just stretch the sharp bend in the tail where the small reinforced area is (careful not to tear plastic) and the bait is more subtle. The warmer the water and outside temps cause plastic to soften some giving similar response. Also the more you fish one bait, you will notice it loosens up after several casts. I have thrown the Shad in and over a tremendous variety of vegetation with good results so I think you will be pleased. Hope you get to come down here sometime soon and join the party.
