  1. A flyrod with a small popper is deadly. I should have included that in my suggestions above.
  2. On small creeks I use a hellgrammite imitation or something similar to a hellgrammite, in-line spinners and small twister tails. On bigger running water I use those mentioned above and the Rebel Crawfish, the Beetle Spin and the Tiny Torpedo with blades. Dry flies work great especially if there is a small hatch. A big hatch might put too many flies on the water and the fish will never find your fake. And then there is live bait!!! Specifically minnows. BTW I see someone mentioned Z-Man baits. I just purchased some Z-Man craws and light jig heads. I hope to try them in some of the smaller creeks I fish. Hopefully rocks won't be too much of a problem but they seem perfect size for small water.
  3. The best is yet to come. Think how satisfied you'll be when you figure it out. BTW keep notes on all my catches. Especially location, depth, lure, time of day and type of bottom. Hopefully when you would look back you will see a pattern. Good luck!
  4. I bet that water was cold and offered a little incentive. ? Impressive catch!
  5. A friend once told me I was too poor to be cheap. I listened to him. I buy good quality gear. Sometimes I have to save a little longer but I am much more satisfied in the end. If you can't afford new then buy used but buy quality. Good luck!
  6. Go bigger! I have a 7" and a 9". I wish I had bought the 11" rather than the 9" but it was twice as much $ at the time. I can see fish and other detail on both but a bigger screen would be better.
  7. I agree with Tom. I fish Canada and the St Lawrence a lot. When pike fishing I use big baits. I frequently catch walleye on big swim baits and hard baits but seldom catch big bass even though I fish areas holding bass.
  8. What gage wire are you using to get from the battery to the motor? If it is a long run you need a heavy gage wire at least 8 gage and maybe 6 gage.
  9. I purchased the NE Lakemaster card. I have not had it on the water but have looked at a few lakes. It is detailed and I'm glad I went to the NE card rather than a single lake card. Thanks for all your advice guys.
  10. I usually try to use a leader that will get me above the surrounding cover. That is subject to immediate change depending on what my gut tells me. Good luck!
  11. Just an FYI. I had trouble with mine. I sent it back to Shimano. They replaced the spool and the side plate. When I got it back I still had some problems when the spool tension was adjusted as they suggested. I kept playing with the tension until I got it right. My tension is a little tighter than they suggest but it works. I may make future adjustments as I get more familiar with it.
  12. We'll be fishing Oneida and Delta in mid June. We never fished either before. Were hoping to target walleye in addition to sm. Any recommendations or suggestions? BTW I saw some photos of big pike that came out of Delta. Is Delta noted for Pike? Thanks
  13. I've been using them for at least 30 years and maybe 40 years and I have never had a problem or had any bolts loosen. How could the bolts loosen on a lower end from the vibration caused by a transom saver on a trailer and not loosen caused by way more vibration when on the water?
  14. Yes!! The transom on smaller boats are weaker than those on bigger boats. That motor bouncing around back there can't be good. I have one on my 17' War Eagle and one on my 14' Ouachita jon boat.
  15. I have a similar problem. I use a SI Hummingbird. I purchased a second finder. It works when it wants to and is not reliable at high speed. The transducer is mounted on the stern like those pictured. The instructions say I can mount it in the bilge of my aluminum boat. They say if the metal is less that 1/8" thick the transducer can shoot through the hull. I will try it and if it works I'll glue it in place. The transducer is a Hawkeye and you can get info at hawkeyeelectronics.com or norcrossmarine.com. It was cheap. About $50.00.
  16. I always stop there when I head up to Maine. My trip usually includes two planned stops, Kittery and LL Beans. Both are worth the time and both are just off of I-95.
  17. Thanks guys! I'm going to try them. Photos to follow......well maybe they will.? '
  18. Has anyone ever fished with or caught fish with spoonplugs? My son was given a complete set but they have never been wet. We've talked about using them and I guess we should give them a try.
  19. Thank you very much! I'll have to get my son to help me. Some of this technical stuff is way over my head.
  20. Tennessee Boy Can you send me a link. I've been looking for the past 1/2 hour and cannot find the Oneida map. Thanks Dog
  21. I have the Terrova with the fob and the pedal. I fish for pike, musky, walleye and crappie in addition to bass. It makes all my fishing easier and more efficient. I will never go back to a cable steer unit again.
  22. Thanks guys!! I never used a lake master chart but I'm going to try. Thanks again!!
  23. I fish small bodies of water and have never used a lake map program. My Hummingbird can accept the map cards. It looks like we may be fishing Lake Oneida in New York this summer. I understand they may have lake map software for Oneida and not being familiar with the software I have a few questions. 1. Can I buy just buy a map of Oneida or do I need to buy a complete set of maps? 2. Is any map program better than another? 3. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Dog
  24. A few years ago we were up in Quebec. They had heavy rain before we got there and the lake was much higher than normal. Fishing was not good. There was a lake front home with a big lawn that extended down to the lake. The lawn was under water maybe a foot to a foot and a half deep. The area in front of the lawn had always produced a few bass but nothing that day. I don't remember why but we tossed a few baits up into the lawn and we started catching bass. I don't remember how many we caught but there was a lot of them and there was a lot of lawn to fish. It made the day for us. BTW I pass that place often but the water has never been that high since then.
  25. Winter for me. My plugs keep bouncing on the ice. It gets better when the ice melts.?
