1st attempt at rod modification
Welmcome aboard jigga! The invasion has begun ;D Did you use thread to build a ramp from the blank to the reel seat threads where the cork was and then epoxy? Brandon did the same thing on a lower end rod, and think he left it as is w/o the thread I think?

Replacing vs. repairing double foot guide?
The first guide(a double foot) above the reel seat on a St Croix AVC70MF has been slightly damaged. The epoxy is cracking and one side of the support loop is slightly bent. Never having replaced a guide before, I'm wondering if I can just straghten the support and re-epoxy for a quick fix, or should I just R&R the guide from the get go? Again it's only slightly bent and still inline. I've only been able to find instructions on how to replace a single foot but not a double footed guide. In regards to rod repair, I thought it would be better to P/U a" how to video", then having to read a step-by-step manual, and wondering if someone would be kind enough to recommend one. Unless you feel a text manaul is the better way to go. Thanks in advance for your help

1st attempt at rod modification
Once again Eric, Thank you for your advice. As I'm tooling around with different idea's (I never claimed to be a rocket scientist) I realized the Avid has an exposed blank as is, underneath the reel seat, just ahead of the trigger. Duh! Other then possibly making it a tiny bit light by removing the foregrip, I don't think I need to. I mean how much lighter can it get by removing the 3 inches of foregrip? Thanks, Paul

Donating fishing gear to those in the armed services
Hey guys, I've been in contact with a few local Senators, recuiting office as well as some of the larger sporting goods chains and waiting to hear back. I've also contacted some of the local newspapers for a possible press release. But before I go any further with the media(not even sure it will happen) but I wanted to check w/the owners/devolopers(lack for appropriate term) of Bassreasource,to see if it would be possible to mention Bassresource, if the article(s) are a go. Thanks again for all the help

Donating fishing gear to those in the armed services
No matter how much rank you have there will always be stupid crap to do! Now I just deal with a lot of paperwork and inspections not the leading of soldiers they preached about in OCS. The best rank in the Army is Specialist because you are not a Private anymore and you are not in charge of anything . If you need anything else let me know? Allen Thanks Allen! If at all possible it would be great to try and reach as many troops as we can,but not sure how to go about it. One of my buddies suggested I contact some of the recruiting stations in our area, and I was also thinking of talking with some of the local politicians in addition to some of the larger sporting good stores. Having a contact like Joe(BassinSoldier) is a good place to start. If people are going to share their generosity, I'd hate to see the packages/donations go unused. I'm guessing not every soldier likes to fish, can't comprehend it myself ;D but I wondering how we could get a list of troops that would be interested and or quite possibly adding other sporting goods to the donations such as footballs, baseball gloves, playing cards etc... If anyone has suggestions or the best avenues to take I'm all ears!

1st attempt at rod modification
You make a very valid point, but I was considering removing the foregrip as well. Though it will take a little more time to muster up the courage ;D After all I've got at least another 3 or 4 months before iceout :'( If you are using a b/c reel and palm the reel, removal of the forgrip can add more sensitivty than trimming more off the rear front grip. You can also remove a small portion of the threads from the front of the reel seat. This will place your finger(s) directly in contact with the blank as well. Just use colored epoxy or thread to build a ramp to transistion from the reel seat to the back to the blank. A split grip where the palm doesn't touch the blank behind the reel can be of use other than just looks. Weight reduction! Whenever you are building a rod, you can save a few grams here, and a few grams there. In doing so, you have a lighter rod that is more sensitive all togther, not to mention easier to throw all day. Frog rods and swimbait rods are prime examples. You may have 12-15 inches of cork behind the reel seat. If you can loose 9-11 inches of cork, you can change the overall weight of the rod and change the balance point for the reel seat. Eric Hey Eric, thank you for the info! I removed approimately 5 inches off a 7' M/H Avid B/C. It's a bit lighter, and I'm more then Ok with the aesthetics and the main reason I did it, other then tryig to lighten it up a bit. I was wondering if I can remove some of the threads w/o removing the foregrip? Leaving space between the forerip and the reel seat for contact w/the blank? I was also considering copying the foregrip of the new Crucials, where they have a notch cut out of the foregrip to contact the blank. Thanks again! Oh and BTW.... love your pic at the bottom, I'd like to do that to a few people I know with the Slammer ;D

1st attempt at rod modification
I have an Avid that I wasn't sure if I wanted to sell or try and modify it by splitting the grip. After a long inner battle and going against what most where recommending(which made a lot of sense!) I decided to keep it and split the grip. After shaking off the nerves, worried about messing it up,I started the project a few days ago. Needs a few finishing touches, as well as a few coats of epoxy and she's complete. IMO not bad for my 1st attempt. Here's a few low grade pic's with my cell phone of the progress.

Donating fishing gear to those in the armed services
Thanks Tom, but it's not me who deserves the thanks, it's our troops. Our troops courage and all the sacrifices they've made, is what allows us to enjoy a sport we are all so passionate about. I've already recieved offers of donations on another site and can only hope it takes off here as well. I'm calling it the "Gear for Guardians".

Donating fishing gear to those in the armed services
I had a Diawa Tierra I was going to sell. BassinSoldier expressed his interest so I decided to surprise him and sent it to his wife in time for Christmas, for free as my way of saying thank you for the sacrifices he has made. At 1st I strugled w/the idea, thinking I coud really use the money. It's obvious I made the right choice! I just recieved an extremely inspiring reply from BassinSoldier which was priceless and out wieghs the monitary value 10 fold! So this gave me an idea,I'm going to try to connect fisherman who might be willing to donate gear to the soldiers. I would like to use BassinSoldier as the connection to out troops. I'm not sure where to start but figured this would be a good 1st step. Here's the reply that inspired this thead; Thanks alot Paul! I sure didn't expect that!!! I was having a pretty crappy day until now. The weather is horrible right now(cold and rainy, iraqi crap mud everywhere) and I was supposed to be off today, but our platoon sargent called everyone up to the company cuz customs was there to inspect our container for redeployment. That really brightened my day hearing bout this. Thanks so much man! This is why I love this forum so much cuz there are so many great folks around here.I'll make sure to get in touch w/ the wife so she knows what to look for. You commin to the road trip 09? kinda far drive for you, but figured I'd ask. Well I better get runnin and thanks again!!! As you can see Joe's reply was worth more then any amount of money! So, if you like to get involved please reply to this thread and we'll get this rolling along. If we can make the same kind of difference in anothr soldiers day we've done our part!
