I Cant Feel Anything.....
You could be fishing where it's a muck bottom. I fish a lake like this. Anything over about 1/4 oz. sinks into the mud.

How In The World To Catch 17Lbs Bass....twice????
Tom....stupid question time.... What about lakes where bass are NOT the top predator? What happens when species that commonly intersect a bass's like musky and northerns?

Rods One Or Two?
D.A.M. made good reels. My father still uses a Quick 4000. Interesting that pretty much all modern reels use a crown and pinion gear, rather than the true worm and screw that D.A.M. utilized. I wonder if they have an international patent that hasn't expired yet? It's the smoothest mechanism I've used to date.

It's built off the same platform....more like the Lexa is derived from this reel.

How In The World To Catch 17Lbs Bass....twice????
Bill Murphy's Pursuit of Giant Bass book would be an excellent primer in learning what is different about the very largest fish in a particular lake. I know one of the bigest things I key on on are structure that SHOULD hold fish, but I very infrequently catch on. Big bass are territorial, and feed rarely. So you are basically hauling wate while fishing them. I know Tom believes, as pointed out in his "Misconceptions" thread, that some fish can only be caught during the prespawn or spawn. I tend to agree, but this doesn't discourage me from continuing to work these spots. A few have succumbed to the lure of the jig and the swimbait.....

Rods One Or Two?
My trout rods are two and three piece, but that's a necessity since they are 10-15' long. Over the counter two piece rods are usually relegated to entry level gear, though there are a few travel rods that are two and three piece setups and are still very sensitive. In a general sense, a single piece blank will outperform a two piece blank, but that isn't to say that a quality, sensitive rod cannot be built out of a two piece blank, but it has to be a quality blank, and is usually a custom build.

Favorite Color Lipless Crankbaits For Fall?
In clear water, some kind of blue, purple, or green and chrome. Most other times, it's whatever looks like Lucky Craft's MS Am. Shad. I think for Spro, that's called "Old Glory." This bait:

High Priced Rods & Sensitivity. Would You Call It Necessary?
A $50 rod will give you plenty sensitivity. A $100 rod gives you yet more sensitivity, and more precise actions. A $200 rod pretty much gives you everything you'd NEED sensitivity wise, and precise action. Add in some serious build quality weight reduction at that point as well. Anything more, is simply nice. The difference between my Legend Tournament rods and my Dobyns Champ Extreme are very negligible. The fit and finish on the Dobyns is a bit nicer, but I'd expect that. The dozen plus Avids I own generally get the job done just as well, too. I don not feel sensitivity is overrated, but the requirement of a $400 rod to get "proper" sensitivity is. There's plenty of options in the $100-200 range that are awesome. Factor in the used market, and anyone can get a nice stick without breaking the bank.

How inconvenient would this scenario be? $200 fine + misdemeanor on your record in NC. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/rural-living/248988-fishing-without-license-north-carolina.html

Do You Risk Not Getting A License?
In NY, DEC Econ and Police are spread thin. This means the likelihood of getting caught is low....but on the flip side, if you do get caught, they nail you to the wall.
