  1. Sics are excellent guides. You will typically find them on Higher end rods. The Gunsmoke refers to the color of the fames. the SiC is the name of the material of the ring. Silicon Carbide. For those who can afford them, they are practically the cream of the crop for guides.
  2. Basstracker, Thanks! Yeah, finding a way to chemically remove the epoxy would be ideal. As for acetone, do you think it would damage the blank. I have seen what it can do to plastic. J, I think the idea behind the notion of increased sensitivity comes from this - without the foregrip, the hand will be in direct contact with the blank as opposed to having cork or whatever material impede the transmission of feedback to the angler's hand. I reckon the increase in sensitivity will be there but not by too much. GAJ, Looking good! When you get to the point where you're going to shape the cork, I recommend covering the exposed blank with painter's tape. This will eliminate any chance of scratching the blank with sandpaper or rasp or file when you start to finalize the shape of the remaining cork behind the reel seat and the butt.
  3. That is also the closet one to me, but it's about 1000 miles away. Now that's a joke... on me. I was in the area but had to leave just a few days before its grandopening. :'(
  4. No! That's not fair!!! I was in my office looking through my Stamina catalog not even an hour ago, particularly at the page with the plastic buuzzbait propellers and started brainstorming a way to make an inline version of buzzbait. I came up with something very similar, but minus the prop in the front. That thing looks kind of cute.
  5. I did this with sandpaper. I heard of people using heat to soften the epoxy, but I did it with sandpaper before knowing this was an option. I would be interested to know there is a method to remove the epoxy chemically in a way that won't damage the blank. I think this would be a better way to go. Rapala Spinning Rod Lightning Casting Rod When held, the palm is in contact with the blank.
  6. Good job! I did the same thing to two of my rods a couple years ago. One spinning (rapala) and one casting rod (lightning). They both came out great too, as did yours. And you're right. It is a blast to do.
  7. Wow, it's neat to see some other folks who like Invizx. I have used the cablea's fc line and it is relatively comaparable to Invizx. RW, I believe that Invizx will be up to task for you. I'd bet a floating rapala minnow on it, heck make that two!
  8. Cool. I was using an optimistic approach. If "A" and "B" are similar, and "A" has a certain trait, then it should be reasonable that "B" might also have a corresponding if not similar trait. Good to know Quantum has a similar resource.
  9. As one who uses both, you're comparing apples to pear applies. They are not the same. However, if you are accustomed to invizx's limpness, which I happen to want in my finesse line, then the regular Yozuri isn't going to cut it. I have not used the Yozuri ultrasoft so perhaps others might chime in on it. I can totally relate with what you said. When I first started using Invizx, it was less than $14 per spool and now my local shops are matching the higher price and it will make it too expensive for my tastes. You might wish to consider the Cabela's fc line. It is only $10 a spool and it is as close to invizx an fc line as I have tried. It is slightly less limp, but for its $10 price, I won't be complaining.
  10. Did you check their homepage? I know Shimano has them available on theirs. I would be inclined to think that Quantum would offer their customers a similar resource. And to prevent it before it starts for anyone who might think this is a pro shimano, bash everyone else thread, forget about it, because it isn't.
  11. x2. Run, don't walk, away from Vanish. x3. I will never use poof, uh, I mean Vanish ever again. Might as well call it poof, because poof! That's just what the fish will do. It's going to vanish.
  12. Use one for treble hook lures and the other for single hook lures. Since they're the same action, I don't think it's going to matter which one you use for which.
  13. G, They look really good! As one who just went through this just last year, I can tell you that the easiest part is the carving. The real challenge will come in getting the bait to list (sit upright in the water unaided) and that will take a combination of weight and location of the weight). A good place to start is at the bottom most part of the bait to insert the lead or tungsten. I'm excited for you, bud. It's an awesome journey. @ RobE: Go for it. The rewards are immeasurable. There is nothing like catching a fish on a lure that you made. I assure you that it will be even sweeter knowing you carved and shaped the blank by hand and it was enough to get a fish to bite.
  14. To sum it up in one word, AWESOME. @ $50 a piece, you ought to be guilty of either a steal of a deal or highway robbery. ;D Congrats. They are an excellent line of rods. I don't have those particular models but given how mine treats me, you're in good hands.
  15. Welcome! Hopefully there is something that can be done to get your products locally, in the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Seattle area. The only exposure I have to anything Pinnacle is from what I hear from fellow members if they bring up Pinnacle products, and I don't mean the golf balls. ;D
  16. Speaking as one who has a minivan, the short answer is absolutely. I lay mine in the middle aisle and insert them from the rear. Even 7' rods should fit. If you have kids, you must tell them to be mindful of the rods on the ground. My rules is NO ONE leaves their seats until I have had a chance to remove the rods from the van. This eliminates the potential for rod breaking via stepping on them. ;D
  17. There is a spinning rod in the Compre Lineup that is 6'6" and MH and is a two piece. I have this rod but I can't recall the model number, but this is an excellent rod. It is one of my trunk rods. I reckon going to Shimano's site you can find its specs. Mine usually sports a 2500 symetre.
  18. I'll bring 4, sometimes 5 with me in the car. I don't carry all of them around. Usually only two depending on the area I'm in or the baits I'm fishing. Occasionally three, but thats fairly rare. Consider yourself lucky, and I mean this. I wish I could do the same, but leaving rods in the car in my neck of the woods is just asking a thief to bust open the car window to steal them. I take anywhere from 1-4 rods and they all come with me, but I devised an apparatus that can 3 of them nicely and the apparatus even keeps them off of the ground.
  19. I just use a backpack and fill it with the planos that have the lures I want to used for that particular outing.
  20. Holy smokes! 1000 plus in under 50 posts, that is great! Keep them coming!
  21. Yeah, that's true and I don't really mind the high pitch intonations, because I interpret that as geniune excitement. You did forget, "Oh my God, he just PUMMELLED it. He just absolutely PUMMELLED it!" Right on, Shaw! 8-)
  22. I am willing to bet that there is probably well over 1000 years of combined experience and knowledge among all of us here. I am curious to see (what else is there to do during the winter blues) what that number looks like. I am relatively new to fishing and just about ending my 5th season, so that's just 5 years for me. Take the number of years you've been fishing (bass and other species) and add it to mine and leave the result at the bottom of your post and the next person will add their years to it. Combined years of experience here at Bass Resource 1) IB - 5 years 2) (next person)
  23. Medium light should be okay. I agree on sensitivity being important when fishing things like Power Bait, if you plan on using it. Sometimes the taking of power bait can be very subtle. If you haven't fished an ultralight, you ought to give it a try. I use a 7' UL Okuma rod. I have landed the occassional 3 lb bass on it while trying to catch trout or blue gill. Also, many bass lures will work on trout, such is little cranks (like rapala minnows), inline spinners, spoons, and even the drop shot.
  24. Looks very good, and I ate chicken for dinner tonight too. ;D
  25. Can't tell you about which one would be better for a CB reel, but the Citica should be very easy to learn with. Set the Centrifugal brakes to have 3 brakes off and 3 brakes on in an alternating fashion and you will be ready to learn. Also, do not use anything less than 1/2 oz for learning. I would love to try a fuego some day, just to see the difference between magnetic and centrifugal brakes for myself, but I taught two people who never casted a bc reel in their lives who didn't birdsnest after I taught them during a 4 hour fishing trip. This doesn't speak to my skill to teach, but rather to the ease of learning the Shimano Centrifugal brake system. It can make an angler lazy. ;D Assuming that the reel is properly set to the lure's weight and there is no super strong wind around, the only way you can backlash from a cast in which the lure's weight properly loads the rod is when you don't stop the spool from spinning when the lure hits an object. So this is the first key I teach beginners: No matter what happens, you (you're thumb) must stop the spool from spinning BEFORE the lure hits an object, be it the water's surface, a shrub, or the darn tootin' ground in front of you because you let get to late. ;D Failure to stop the spool from spinning will increases the potential for a birdsnest. In addition, it doesn't matter how you stop the spool from spinning... Feather it to a stop, or stop it dead cold. Just stop the spool from spinning and most of the potential for a backlash is greatly reduced.
