  1. I was thinking about a rod holder with a c-clamp to attach to the rim. This way I can move it or remove it. Do you have a picture of how you rigged yours?
  2. I got my kayak off craigs, but be aggressive they go quickly. I was scheduled twice to see kayaks I really liked and they were sold before I got there. I don't know how to do a milk crate on the rounded back of the kayak. What do you put in the crate? My tackle fits between my legs and dry bag behind the seat.
  3. Absolutely, I used the pads today on my truck and they were only about 4 feet apart anyway. Same as they would be on a car. Unless you have a Smart Car, then you may take off. ;D
  4. When tying down the kayak on the roof, do you use front and rear traps over the hood and tailgate as well? I have a short 10' kayak, and I'm thinking this may be overkill.
  5. Good ideas. I guess a paddle bungee thing-a-magic on the side could second as a pole clip while using the paddle.
  6. A foam kayak carrier came with it, but I see them for about $50 bucks and it goes on my Jeep Cherokee Classic pretty easily at about 40 lbs. I swayed between a canoe and kayak as well, but yesterday I went on the L.L. Bean $15 kayak demo at Accotink and decided a kayak was the way to go. It was so relaxing, but we'll see if that lasts the first time I drop my pole in the water.
  7. I bought a used L.L.Bean Manatee today and need to outfit it for fishing. If anyone is interested in paddling for some fish, PM me. I was also wondering if any of you kayakers use an anchor, paddle leash, or pole leash? Okrod
  8. You guys have been awesome with the feedback. I bought a L.L. Bean Manatee today. It's not the fishing model, so I have to do some rigging, but it was relatively cheap. Thanks. Okrod
  9. Thanks for the input guys. I'll check the site and I'm happy to hear more recommendations if anyone has any. Okrod
  10. Thanks for the comments guys. Yah, a pic would have been nice, but the camera was on another assignment. But I know she's hooked and we'll have another crack at it.
  11. I was wondering if I could get some advice on whether it's better to fish lakes and ponds from a kayak or a canoe? I'm considering a small angler kayak; i.e. L.L.bean Manatee, or a one person canoe. Thanks,
  12. Congratulations and good luck with the boy and with the boat.
  13. My 4 year old girl just got her first bass on a Disney rod; a 1 lb LM. Unbelievable! Sorry, no camera, no pic. We rented a canoe at Accotink and I set her up with her first real hook; a shaky head curly tail worm. She caste it into a submerged tree (like a pro with a soft entry, but totally lucky) and I immediately thought, "why didn't I see that spot". I didn't expect either of us to catch anything, so you could imagine my surprise when the fish broke the surface and I realized she wasn't just snagged in the tree. I immediately crawled to the front of the canoe and tightened her drag as we both reeled it in. She was freaked out, but excited. I guess we have competition at Accotink. :-/
  14. I've been consistently catching everything up 2 lbs. I've only had one zero day a couple weeks ago at a pond I call it the frog pond, because I caught three frogs and no fish. I can't seem to land the larger fish over 2 lbs although I am trying deep cover as much as possible. I know were you guys are praying on your knees. I was there yesterday, but reluctant to dig in. I know that's were they're buried because it's the only real deep brush on the lake. My rule has been generally, if you can't pull them out, don't put in. But that's not landing me the big ones. The brush looks so much more accessible by boat.
  15. Thanks guys, I was in Burke and I hit three keepers about 1lb and a couple dinks. Not bad for a couple hours, but a hawg would have settled the issue. : Used a shallow crank bait and a watermelon senko. I was skipping under a tree and got a big bite that took have my tube, but on the next cast I landed a snapping turtle. It took the hook, but I don't think I wanted to try to retrieve it anyway.
  16. I was wondering if the fish will be biting after a rain? The rain just breezed through the area and I was planning on going out this evening. Okrod
  17. I purchased a St. Croix Triumph at Dick's. It was $59 and they doubled up my coupons for a $25 savings. Not bad. Thanks for the feedback guys. Has anyone used the Acadia Sports F series rods? They're $50, but buy one get one free.
  18. I know the moderators are going to kick this to tackle, but I wanted some local NOVA guys opinions on a new rod or combo since you know the water I'm fishing. I broke the rod tonight trying to retrieve a snagged lure. It was an old Galyan's IM6 medium heavy 6' spinning rod. I loved the rod and feel it met my needs, but I really don't know the tech on the hardware. I use soft and hard baits up to 3/4 oz and usually 12 lb P-line Floroclear. I haven't used a baitcaster, so I think I want to stay with spinning unless there's a great reason to move. Although my real is also old (shimano 2000) I could keep it and only get a rod if that makes sense to do. I also think I would like to get something local (Dick's, etc.) since I have not backups. I'm looking to spend less then $100 bucks since recent car repairs sapped my funds. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks, Okrod
  19. Today I had two just around 2 lbs; one on a mepps and the other on a crank. I've been most productive casting parallel to the shoreline ahead of myself so I lead with my lure and don't scare off the fish. I don't seem to have the technique or patience for senkos and tend toward hard bates, so I have to be careful pitching along the shore and keeping out of trees. Black and blue 1/4 oz jigs with a rattle have also been productive and less likely to hang. I also toss them along the shore and keep them moving for reaction strikes. Topwaters have also eluded me. This morning around 6am, I tried a spook, popper, and swim bate to no avail.
  20. I'm heading out early tomorrow and looking for a place to catch good size fish, not fight too much vegetation, has some cover from the heat, and not get hauled off by the police. It sounds like everyone is knocking down Barcroft, Cook, and Fairview for multiple reasons. Any other suggestions?
  21. Matt, I can hook up Tues. PM for me if you're still available.
  22. Hey guys, I was out of power from this storm and just got it back this afternoon. If it was anything like what rolled through Burke either your brave as hell or extremely stupid. Maybe both. :-/ Of course, I'm just kidding. Glad to see your alive.
  23. Thanks guys, you just saved me a day. I'll be sure to smuggle aboard a boat for Fountainhead.
  24. Dude, awesome day. I guess you're happy we didn't do Fountainhead today.
  25. NitroMan and I are heading out to Fountain head tomorrow morning, so we'd also be happy to hear any reports. We'll be sure to post a report tomorrow evening, hopefully with some pics.
