when the fishing isn't ideal, are you listening to anything? music?
No, nothing. I get out on the water specifically to escape from everything. While I emerse my mind, body & spirit totally into whatever that day brings. If you're going to listen to ANYTHING ELSE please wear ear buds. Not doing so is IMO, blatantly selfish. Sound carries a looooooong way over open water. A-Jay

Starting with Power or Finesse?
I've been a huge proponent of this approach for a long time myself. You might have seen the results here a few times. In my own fishing there's a lot to it, and it is very spot- or area-dependent. Either way, it's something I rarely waver from. A-Jay

You OK A-Jay?
Yes we are fine. Just wet and cold but fine. All of the worst weather carnage happened quite a bit south of us. Hoping the best for those folks. Thank you very much for checking on us. A-Jay

Workout Day 3 ~ Completed 3 working sets of the 5 scheduled movements. I'm sure it was just me, but there certainly seemed like there was quite a bit more gravity today. #borninfiftynine A-Jay

A-Jay's Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~ 2025-2026 Edition
The melt is on up here ~ And for as much snow & ice as we have or should I say had, this sure is one heck of a wet mess. No mud yet, but it's coming. You know . . . it's coming. A-Jay

Winter 2025 ~ 2026
We had some wicked thunderstorms here over night, but no twisters thankfully. Either way Kya spent the night on my head. A-Jay

Composite Rods for bladed jigs
I use quite a few composite sticks. They are my blank material of choice for most every moving bait. Exceptions are topwater, jerkbaits & a few others. My preference is to be big like glass but not to fish exactly like glass. 13 composite sticks in the pic below. A-Jay

Lake Baccarac Lodge In Mexico
Just like any customer/client deal, the guide works for you. So you drive the bus all day every day. However, If you have never been to or fished a lake that 25 miles long and 5 miles wide and the guide has lived and fished there his entire life, as much as I think I know bass fishing, I will always bow to the man with the experience. How do you think he got that job ? We have had our best trips by allowing the guide to do his job. I have beat this horse way dead in this entire thread. Also the guide is 'evaluating' the client to assess his/her fishing ability & experience. We all want to believe that in our fishing world, we are really good bass fisherman. Great casters, great at reading water, great at hooking and landing big bass and so on. Well the guides see it ALL. Day in and day out. The good, the bad & the ugly. The trip is then molded to match whatever level clients in his boat are at. What I do on Lake Menderchuck will never translate to catching bass in Mexico. As soon as I put myself right there, things started to click. The anglers that do the best and catch the most and biggest bass on Lake Baccarac, are often the least experienced. Because they do what the guide tells them to do. I will now be taking this thread back to its roots and simply posting about my own trips. Will no longer be commenting on what other bassheads have experienced down south. A-Jay

Lake Baccarac Lodge In Mexico
The lake is uncharted. Water levels rise/fall 40-60 feet from year to year. Guides are mandatory. A-Jay

Erie or Ontario?
The world may never understand what truly happened out there. You were doing things most folks here would never believe. I was so fortunate to have been able to experience it a few times. Thank You. A-Jay

Lake Baccarac Lodge In Mexico
@rmcguirk Thank you for taking the time to share your trip here. I do understand that since the fishing wasn't what you'd hoped for, A write-up was like pouring salt in the wound. No one wants to document poor fishing. But like you said, it happens. And I'm glad you decided to add that here. I think it's important for folks to know that bass fishing is bass fishing. It is not always rainbows and unicorns, even in Mexico. As for the lodge, I expected nothing less than a glowing report. The people and the accommodations are quite proper. As for the travel, I did mention that we only do the private air to the lodge. (Meaning NO Van Rides). Mostly because of the inconveniences of the Mexican commercial air travel you mentioned. I will make zero attempt to try and dissect how your fishing trip went. I will say I wish it had gone better for you, but there is no way I could tell you from here if there was anything you could have done differently. It may be easy to review or evaluate the lodge and accommodations anytime. But it may be a little trickier trying to judge the fishing on that giant lake based on one week of fishing. I have 212 days and a wake-up before our next trip, and I'm excited. Over the years of going there, we've had a few tough days but also had plenty of crazy awesome days as well. So we just keep going, because 10, 11, and 12 lb-plus bass do live there. And we want to be there when they bite. Stay Safe and thanks again A-Jay

BROWN BASS TOOLS ~ Questions & Answers
As my Megabass jerk bait collection continued to swell the Lucky Craft assortment has sort of dwindled. And it's not because these Lucky Craft baits don't get bites for me, it's more like I have been a prisoner of the moment and continually innfatuated with how effective the vision one tens are. So while going through my jerk baits this morning, specifically the LC Pointer collection. I decided to resurrect some of the more popular deals and once again make them a routine part of my rotation. I did recently rehome my Pointer 128s, so I’m left with the 127 & 112 size offerings. We're looking at mostly natural patterns as well as some that have a bit of a smelty appearance. As always , new hooks and hardware are part of the renovation. Looking forward to feeding them to a few Big Brown Bass. Let's see how it goes. A-Jay

How to build confidence once on the water
Once you're on the water, even in a john boat, it all starts and ends by prioritizing safety. Always wear your Life Jacket. Know your limits; be alert for rough, dangerous conditions. (boat wakes) Utilize GPS mapping to help keep you safe. Prepare for Emergencies: Have a float plan (let someone know where you are going) and ensure your boat has essential safety gear, including a fire extinguisher, horn, and charged battery. Check the weather forecast and avoid severe weather. Keep your boat deck clean and organized. There you go - I'll let the more experienced bassheads assist you on what to expect fishing-wise. I'm still learning most all of that deal myself. Have fun and take it slow. A-Jay

Drifting Vs Stationary in a boat
OK, however, I am not very well versed on how you fish And comparing how our approaches may vary doesn't seem productive to me either. You do it your way, and I'll do it mine. A-Jay

Drifting Vs Stationary in a boat
I thought you had a canoe parked at a couple of different lakes. Either way, I prefer to fish from an anchored rig A-Jay
