Working to Stay Lean ~
Getting back after even a minor injury type layoff can be tough. As is gaining trust & confidence in the injured area. Luckily, I think I'm going to be OK. #borninfiftynine A-Jay

so I drop my dog off at the Vet today for teeth cleaning.
While our 'pack' is as small as it's ever been (3) Vet bill have been a way of life for us for a while. Our vet is actually Out-Standing, and we are lucky that she's close. Either way, I asked them to Never tell me the total cost. It's not like I'm not going to pay it. I just hand them the designated "Vet" credit card and that's it. When we have a full kennel and we're fostering, the local animal shelter handles the foster care needs, and we can focus on training & re-homing. Hope your pup is OK. A-Jay

There's a real good chance your dog is reacting to your emotions. Every canine we've ever had was a reactor to the situation not an initiator. Try chilling yourself out a little and you may be surprised what happens. Also good on you for looking out for your dogs health. A-Jay

Does it annoy you how many people mishandle fish, laying them on the ground and lipping them at a 45 degree angle for pictures?
For me, following the letter and the spirit of the C & R, as well as Fish Possession laws is not optional. In that regard, the opinion of the folks wearing this badge matters. It ends there. "At age 20, we worry about what others think of us. At Age 40, we don't care what they think of us. At age 60, we discover that they haven't been thinking of us at all." A-Jay

But I'm in the rack by 7 or 8 for those trips. So it's not too bad. A-Jay

Evolution of a fishing canoe (and mindset)
Nice rig. I say that there's plenty of very nice fish to be caught from your canoe. Just need to hunt them down a bit. Before I got into a boat - I was (and still am) fishing from an Old Town Canoe. Over time I've made a few handy for me modifications which have helped make the entire experience much more enjoyable. At least one anchor is a must and sometimes two is better. (bow & stern) There's a learning curve and you'll need quite a bit of anchor line to do it effectively & safely. Especially if you fish in relatively deep water. But it's worth it as presenting baits from a stationary platform can be a real big deal. Most all my adventures in the canoe are on smaller lakes. Sometimes it's paddle only power, other places I use the trolling motor. Portage is often part of my deal (I use a small 2 wheel cart) but big wind & waves are not. Just too hard to fish & often is unsafe. I've been able to have some very memorable days on the water the past 14 years or so and even catch a few decent fish, including bass, in the process. I have recorded several videos from the canoe Below is a clip of a hefty Pike I got a few years back while fishing from the canoe. https://youtu.be/02fPoZHOri8?t=125 A-Jay

What time do you go to bed?
By design, nothing of importance happens in our world after 9 pm. We wind down the day and are usually horizontally prone by 9:30 or 10 pm at the latest. I'm up at 6 in the summer with the dogs, 6:30-7 am in the dead of winter. The human body is a magic machine and much of that happens while we sleep. As an older man, this becomes especially important. I used to hate going to bed. Now, I'm ready, willing & able to get all the benefits from it I can. A-Jay

Back on the water
@pdxfisher Nice Bass ! You are so courageous for pushing through this. I can only imagine how very hard it is to manage your everyday tasks. No doubt that your time on the water brings you joy or comfort. Hoping you can continue to take care of yourself and live each day as fully as possible. A-Jay

Working to Stay Lean ~
Haven't been on this one in a few. After my wife's health took a turn I pretty much went into a funk. One that wasn't real excited about working out. So I wasn't. To add to the fun, I've been dealing with what I'm calling a 'cranky' right knee. Not exactly sure what that deal is or how it happened. Had some stiffness, swelling and lost some range of motion/flexibility. Either way, I wasn't going to be able to workout until at least some of it resolved. Fortunately, after about 10 days (of limping around) most of it has and I'm back at it. Sometimes life comes at us pretty fast. A-Jay

How late into the season is still “good”?
After turn over here, Oct / Nov time frame water temps crash through the 40's and starts ticking the 30's. I can usually still get a few decent brown bass right up until the hard water. Just depends on whether or not I want to endure the elements to do it. So much nicer with little to no wind and brilliant sunshine. Doesn't happen much but when it does. I am there. A-Jay

knife sharpening. the journey.
I understand the concept, have the tools and the time. Using various stones, steels and ceramic rods, most everything I own that's designed to cut, slice and or dice always has decently clean edge. I am not however so proficient that I'm shaving with an axe. Just saying. A-Jay

When I was a kid I thought they were the coolest fish ever and threw minnows at them day & night in the spring mostly. But I'm pretty sure you're right. I rarely fish for them now and am hardly ever around any. It may also be fair to say that what I routinely throw isn't exactly crappie friendly. A-Jay

Why Bassheads have multiple rods & reels ~
I don't really need more, I mean seriously. But there's a few more in the locker, hanging on the wall in the garage and a small collection of retired sticks in the hobby shop. As outrageous as that is ~ And we're not even talking about ALL the Striped Bass stuff I had but sold most of before moving up to the sweet water. And I have no problem mentioning all this because I've seen PLENTY of pics in this forum of collections of gear that totally DWARF my whole deal. And you guys know who you are . . . . . A-Jay
