My Most Productive Baits ~ 2021 Edition
Thank and I sure can. Most of this is straight from Brown Bass Tools ~ "In my jerkbait fishing, I am presenting them to smb that are on or at least relating to the bottom. So for me, the idea of a suspending jerkbait is a bit of a misnomer. (Plus, I add weight to at least half my jerkbaits so they Cast further (and into the wind) & run DEEP. Early season almost always includes wind and getting the bait away from the boat is a huge deal. When the water's warmer - say above 52-55 degrees, brown bass are far more willing to come well up off the bottom to get a bait. But when it's colder, especially mid-40-ish, they are not going to do that very often, at least IME. So what does that have to do with color ? Just Everything. There's two concepts that I follow when selecting bait color/pattern that's being presented on or near the bottom, and Jerkbaits in this case, fall directly into that category. I either want the bait to be close to or MATCH the color / shade of whatever the bottom is I'm fishing; sand, some type of green weed, leaves, whatever. Sometimes a splash of color contrast is good. OR I’ll go with a color pattern that is WILDLY different - Like Clown. So I want my bait to either appear like it’s trying to hide / blend in or standing out badly, and I do not prefer much in the middle ground. In the clear waters I fish, Perch ( Dark Green, yellow or brown) or a 'clear/glass’ perch works over darker bottoms, Ayu works in the sun over sand, and when the fish are truly suspending, I use a glass minnow, smelt type deal. So that kind of simplifies it a little at least. At times a some flash is a good thing, like chrome or gold in slightly colored water, other times it may not be the best choice, like in super gin clear water. I also believe that light level plays a significant role here as well. Brilliant sunshine usually calls for something a little more subtle / toned down, whereas cloudy or overcast days, see me reaching for a darker patterned bait. Finally and I know you didn't ask about this, but I have been doing VERY Good with Silent Megabass Jerkbaits. In clear water less that say 8 feet or so, places I would normally throw a bait with standard running rattling bait and still applying the color 'guidelines' I mentioned above, a Silent Bait has been just killer. Hope that helps. A-Jay

Irritating Dog barking rant.
@N Florida Mike First off, you know I am a dog lover and have several. But this has nothing to do with the dog. It's just doing what it does. But now that action is "Disturbing the Peace" and it's unlawful. I would Not address this with the dog owners, they obviously don't care about you or anyone else. Most communities have ordinances that address dogs barking at all hours of the night. Here's yours ~ https://library.municode.com/fl/jacksonville/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=TITXIIIHECO_CH462AN_PT3NU_S462.302NO I would call the police every day - they will most likely refer you to animal control. Then I would call them both every day until they do something to fix it. Here's more very applicable info https://library.municode.com/fl/jacksonville/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=TITXIIIHECO_CH462AN Good Luck. A-Jay

Which line do you use for which presentation
as requested ~ The gear I use dictates the line choice (Type & Test) for me. All my spinning gear is braid to mono or FC leader. 8-20 lb braid with 8 - 12 lb leader. Topwater baits or baits I want to keep shallow, get Mono leader, everything else gets FC leader on spinning gear. My casting gear is 'mostly' straight FC. All horizontal moving baits as well as bottom contact baits, are FC. 10 - 20 lb. Exceptions are few and include frogs and anything in the slop; I'm using straight braid. 40-50 lb. I will use a stout mono (22 lb usually) for some bigger topwater deals, Rats & Whopper Plopper for example. These choice work for me & my fishing. Used to fish braid & a leader on casting gear. Once I started and learned how to 'use & fish' FC effectively, I ditched the braid. I use a few different braided lines: Sufix 832 & Seaguar Smackdown but my FC is ALL either Seaguar InvisX or Tatsu; including leaders. Mono is all Sunline Shooter Defier Armilo Nylon Line - Thanks @WRB So that's my deal. A-Jay

Irritating Dog barking rant.
I would have paid good money to see the owner's expression when he/she opened that bag and read that note. I think it made them realize that someone was 'handling' their dog. And that can go several different ways. A-Jay

Both of these deal are matters for your local animal Control Officer. Many 'Missing dog' and 'dog bite' stories start out sounding just like this. We had an incident a few years ago where a family who came up on weekends about 1/2 mile from my place, would let their Golden Retrieve out very early morning to do her business. (Off Lead and unattended) For some reason she liked my front lawn. I didn't appreciate that. So I waited for her one morning and manage to coax her to me. I placed a small string around her neck that had a plastics bag attached to it. In the bag was a note that read, "Please do not allow me to run free and damage other peoples personal property." Then I sent her on her merry way. Never saw that sweet dog again. Seriously, call animal control - this it what they do. A-Jay

Boaters casting over shore fishermen
"Getting Poached" is the term I use. Whether it happens Boater to Bank, Bank to Boater or Boater to Boater, it's still feels the same; every time. Big Time infringement with a healthy does of being disrespected floating right on the top there. Very few are a fan of being on the receiving end of a good poach. Besides being a familiar topic of conversation here in the forum, there's all kinds of stories where it's inspired folks to go to war. From the casual angler right on through to the Professional level. No one is exempt. While it doesn't happen a ton in my fishing, when it does, I 'try' not to let it get to me. Shaking my head in obvious disbelief and disgust is about as far as I'll take it. However, I do draw the line at Unsafe. Do Not come close aboard my rig on plane. That will always rile me up ! Stay Safe A-Jay

Lews KVD Composite Cranking Rods for Chatterbaits
I use the original Quantum 7'4" MH for Vibrating Jigs & Spinnerbaits in open water; usually with 15 lb Tatsu. Own several. Been touting this stick for a while. Casts great & keeps fish pinned. I freaking love it ! Might not be for everyone but it sure is for me. No experience with the Lew's version but I bet it's pretty close to the same deal. https://youtu.be/zIqCmH_52IQ?t=1859 https://youtu.be/UQCujU5QUts?t=216 A-Jay

Warranty - favorable or fiendish experiences
@king fisher beat me to the punch but . . . . Truth be told I for one, would be totally for No Warranty or perhaps 30 days at the most. You must know that we are certainly PAYING for a warranty replacement in the initial purchase price. Whether we use or not. So if the sellers could find there way to set a purchase price that didn't include this extra cost, I'd be very good with that. Finally, every rod I've ever blow up and I mean every one, was my fault, not the manufacturer. If I close a rod in a door, or stick it in a ceiling fan, or even snap it on a snag, none of that is a warranty issue. How or why I would expect them to pay for my mistake, makes no sense to me. I'm sure 'a good warranty' in a positive selling point, but I don't need it. I am perfectly fine paying for my own mistakes, if & when they happen. Rant over. YMMV A-Jay
