which Daiwa spinning reel...
and my pflueger supreme xt 2500 is much lighter then that @ 6.5 oz. so nahnahnah haha. sorry, but you're not comparing comparable reels. the "25"-size pflueger is closer (but still smaller than) the 1000-size stradic, which in CI4-form is only 6.2 ounces.

which Daiwa spinning reel...
with some of the daiwas, this is true, with others it is not...it really depends on the particular model. you can usually tell by looking at the specs; if they're close in weight and have the same drag rating, they're likely on the same body but use different spools. thoughts: you should definitely get a 2000-size reel if you already have a 3000-size. you'll appreciate the difference in size and weight. if possible, choose a daiwa model with the air bail. love that feature. i notice better line management (less twist) with the air bail as well as smoother operation. remember that the different reel sizes have different line recovery rates. for example, on a daiwa tierra, the inches of line retrieved per turn of the handle are: 2000-size: 24 inches 2500-size: 28 inches 3000-size: 31 inches some uses benefit from a slower rate (moving baits like crankbaits, swimming jigs), some from a faster (topwater, contact baits like texas- and carolina rigs, etc.). remember also that the drag ratings are lower with the smaller reels. finally, you may want to consider the cabela's prodigy. it is basically a daiwa tierra but without the sealed drag. plus, they're on sale right now for only $60.

Just bought Daiwa Fuego and Sol
congrats...both are beautiful reels. i have a fuego and am looking to add a sol to my collection. curious though...why did you put 30 lb. test on the sol and 20 lb. test on the fuego? it should be the other way around. the sol should handle the thinner line better as well as casting lighter lures better. btw, how much were they in the store?

Your Favorite Gear Stinks
i am rather embarrassed to admit that the :-[ bass pro shops prolite finesse rod (6'9" ML) is one of my absolute favorite rods

Braid tightness on spool
it could be the reel, the line or both. cheap braid isn't very round...some of it can even look like a tape worm which will dig like crazy. quality braid is rounder and far less prone to digging. where the reel comes in is in how broadly the line guide lays the line down onto the spool. broad angles = less digging. in this regard, there's quite a bit of difference among reels.

Revo S vs Revo SX
i'm with rubba bubba. i had a revo S and two SXs and i liked the S more. the S's centrifugal braking system was far more manageable and consistent. i really liked how the SXs looked though...the black paint job was just plain good-lookin'.

the mr. clean magic eraser works wonders. buy it at home depot, target, walmart, etc. in the household cleaning supplies section.

St Croix Avid CB rods vs. G Loomis
i love the CBR845. reading the specs and the product description, you'd think it was best for only the heavier lures but that's not the case at all. an extremely versatile and as sweet a rod as there ever was. some of my full-handled rods [L to R]: lamiglas XC724, g.loomis MRB783, g.loomis CBR845, g.loomis SBR813: as you can see, the CBR845's handle isn't that short. about 1/2 shorter than the SBR813 but about 1/2 longer than the MBR783. i have biggish hands and i can two-hand cast with it just fine...i love it just the way it is. by the way, i think the sol would be a smokin' match for the CBR845 weight and power-wise even the color would match the gold thread highlights of the CBR.

New rods from lamiglass - made in USA
a few days ago, my local retailer hinted that the reason lamiglas has been behind on all their other rods was because they were heavily occupied with the introduction of a new lineup of rods and now, we get a first glimpse. my guess is that they will available fairly soon. so far, i haven't been overly impressed with any of the $100 rods (bucoo and mojo) but i'm holding out hope for these as i like the actions on lot of other lamiglas rods.

G Loomis IMX vs GLX
unfortunately, the answer to this isn't so simple. take the MBR783C for example. the IMX version is 4.3 ounces versus 4.1 ounces for the GLX. the IMX actually feels stiffer than the GLX as the GLX has a slightly more forgiving tip although GLX is slightly faster overall than IMX. g.loomis' GLX rods often have fuji sic guides (or recoils) over alconites. like all luxury items, you have to pay a lot more at the top of the price spectrum to gain a little. short answer: if you can afford it, go for it.

Cabelas XML on Sale at deep discounts
i ordered an XML finesse flipping stick...it was listed as MH online and in the catalog but the wrapper on the rod itself said H. my guess is that some of the wrappers are incorrect. the flipping stick definitely feels like an MH stick compared to my other H-rated flipping sticks. i also have the XMLti dropshot spinning rod which is rated M which i would say is spot on and, if anything, leaning a little more toward ML than MH. as for the worm/jig rod, ideally they should have a very stiff ("fast") tip. to me, the ideal worm rod is MH and the ideal jig rod should H.

MagTouch
i tried two of them and found their handles to be too small and i had to dip them in the water sometimes because they get really hot in the sun. i think they're a little on the heavy side too. you can always order it and give it a shot. you have 60 days to return it no questions asked and all it will cost you is $7.50 in shipping (using the included return shipping label). personally, i think you'd be much better off with one of cabela's XML rods that are currently on sale. the prices on their technique-specific rods are downright ridiculous. the 6'10" pitchin' model is pretty versatile.

backlash waiting to happen?
by any chance, is this a BPS extreme reel with the free zone braking system? i have two of them and, whether i set the mag brake dial at 1 or 10, it seems to make hardly any difference at all. anyway, it sounds like your cast control knob is too loose. it is the knob on the handle side of your reel, under the drag star. tighten it until your lure falls smoothly to the floor when the thumb bar is depressed.

Daiwa Baitcaster Questions
by the way, you can demo up to four daiwa reels for a week for free at www.***.com and only pay $15-$20 for shipping. imagine fishing with a sol, fuego, zillion and a steez...how cool is that?
-
Daiwa Fuego A
looking at the specs, there is a significant weight difference between the 2500 and the 3000 and so you would have to assume that the difference is more than just the spool. by the way, you can demo the fuego for free for one week at www.***.com (pay only for shipping).

Daiwa Baitcaster Questions
i'm like raul...when there are many good options, i end up buying one of each and seeing for myself which ones work for the way i fish and which ones don't. i have a fuego and love it and will probably pick up a zillion coastal in a few months. i've also had two mag revos and, well, that's something you definitely have to try for yourself...some love it, some hate it. j.francho's explanation of the differences in magnetic braking systems is spot on. i'd basically call daiwa's mag-V/Z "smart" brakes since they automatically adjust on the fly, applying more braking force when most needed (e.g., at the beginning of the cast when the spool is spinning at the highest RPM) and less when less is needed (e.g., at the end of the cast as the spool slows). contrast that to the revo's linear magnetic braking system which maintains the magnets at a set distance from the spool throughout the cast.

Cabelas XML on Sale at deep discounts
sorry, but that sales rep must be confused. cabelas customer service is outstanding and would definitely not hassle you about a refund. perhaps the sales rep was thinking that they could take the rod home and fish it for 60 days without having to pay for it first?

Spooling a spinning reel
and daiwa specially instructs you to NOT lay the spool on its side. rather, you spool daiwas from the bottom of the spool.

Cabelas XML on Sale at deep discounts
yes, i have done that. i fished an XMLti flipping stick for over 60 days actually and returned it with no problems. to return it, all you have to do is pack it back in same shipping tube it came in, slap the prepaid return shipping label on it and drop it off at UPS. they will deduct $7.50 from your refund for the return shipping (cheap!). by the way, i just received my XMLti dropshot spinning rod a few days ago and IT IS SWEET!

Berkley Lightning Rod?????
been there, done that! i fished lightning rods until i finished schooling and did fine. at this point, concentrate on learning as much as you can and improving your technique and presentation. you should also consider the new berkley amp rod too: http://www.another site/reviews_article.asp?id=161

Abu Garcia Pro Max Review
flexy and squeaky but absolutely amazing casting distance and the magnetic braking works great (worlds better in my experience than the revo SX's magnetic brakes). the revos are actually slightly more compact than the max reels and all revos have one-piece metal frames, making them smoother and quieter. my revo S was very easy to cast and fish with too but i could never get the distance i could with the pro max, even with only one of the centrifugal brakes on. the revo S will definitely outlast the pro max and feels much more solid.

BPS and Prices
Frank, I just got a $100 gift card to BPS for Father's Day (Wahoo!) and plan to buy a Pro-Qualifier BC reel when they go on sale. Are you saying I won't get the sale price if I use my gift card? Or am I not reading this correctly? Thanks, DMB hey DMB, sorry for the confusion. here's what i'm talking about: www.basspro.com/save100 this is the current promotion for $20 off a minimum $100 purchase. let's say you want to take advantage of this promotion and so you place an order for $115 in merchandise. if you paid by credit card, you'd get the $20 discount. but, if you want to apply your $100 gift card toward this order, you would have to order another $85 worth of merchandise to get the $20 off because the amount of the gift card is subtracted from the qualifying amount of the promotion, in this case, the minimum $100 purchase. this is why i hate getting gift cards from BPS as gifts...not only can it be worth less than the cash amount it was bought for BUT you don't get the rewards points for them either. cabela's does not do this and the only reason i can think of why BPS does is because they figure they already have your money so why bother.

BPS and Prices
i have faithfully ordered stuff from BPS since the early 80s but, this year, i have decided to no longer do business with them unless no one else had what i needed. the stores do not honor the online prices unless you bring in printed proof and ask for a price match. the stores also will not take back merchandise you ordered online and vice versa. if you get a gift card, the amount of the gift card is deducted from the qualifying purchase amount of any promotion! when ordering online, you had better print a copy of your order summary because that is the last time you will see the prices you paid. it has happened to me two separate times where i placed an order using a $20 off a $100 purchase offer and the discount shows up properly and order total is correct, but each time, the charge on my credit card was $20 MORE than my order total. i went back and looked at the order confirmation that was emailed to me...it shows no prices or the order total. i looked at my order history online...no prices or order total. good thing i printed my order summary because that was the only proof i had that they overcharged me. i know it sounds crazy to insinuate a huge company like BPS is shady but there is definitely something wrong here! their inventory system for their clearance section is not in real time. it is really frustrating to place an order expecting one thing but not finding out until the next day that they didn't actually have it. i read others here report about the great customer service they get at BPS stores but i have no such experience. i tried to exchange a BPS rod that was only 2-3 months past the one-year warranty because the trigger had cracked but the manager, who said he was bending over backward for me, said i was SOL. cabelas, on the other hand, totally stands behind everything they sell. they don't penalize you for using gift certificates. they email you order confirmations with prices and order totals on them.

will hot temps in my car damage fishing rods
i was told that the ferrule glue used to secure the tip-top guide is a hot-melt wax and that, at very high temperatures, will get soft and you may get some movement/rotation of the tip-top if it is leaning against something.

Why Use a Spinning Reel??
95 percent of my gear is baitcasting but spinning stuff definitely has its place. i have 2 shimano crucial casting dropshot/ shakeyhead rods that i love but i have found that working that shaking action is easier on my wrist with spinning gear because of reel hanging down from the bottom of the rod provides more balance.
