topwater question
In general, when it's flat calm, maybe a cold front, and NO LIFE happening on top (bluegills pecking at surface, etc) it's gonna be tough. Fish will come from very deep to take a bait but remember, the bait has to be worth expending the energy to go get it. I use big baits in deeper water (I only use big baits everywhere, but kind of off the point, lol) I think the Heddon Excalibur spook said on the package that it will attract fish from 30 ft. Again, the fis won't travel all that way to get something that will give it less energy than it just used to go get it. On the other side, you can have fish exploding on bait all over the surface and can't get one to take anything you throw at it. TOO much bait. Just throw, throw and throw, that's what I do, you'll be able to tell soon enough if you are wasting your time and you will learn from that experience. Personally, being primarily a wake baiter this year, I'm up top 24/7. I'm learning this bait so.....next year I will go sub surface with these bigger baits and will have the top covered. Remember, even when you're not catchin', you're learnin'. Hours on water will help you recognize prime windows with better efficiency if you pay attention each and every time.

I Can't Get My Buzz Bait to Buzz Or My Jitter Bug To Jitter!!!
#1 When fishing a buzzbait, you close the bail BEFORE the lure hits the water so you are already in your first few rotations when it does. The bait will be immediately on plane. This is where it needs to be to work. #2. Jitterbugs have to be "tuned" - the cup in front has to be bent in a certain way. If it was loaded in a tackle box and then the lid s closed on it, it can flatten out the cup and you never even knew it. (think of it as placing the bait on the dinner table,,,sitting as it would in the water. Now with your palm, press down on it against the table. See what happens to the bill? It needs to be bent back to make more of a cup shape.) -The j-bug, unlike a b-bait, will not sink. If you arehaving trouble getting it on top so it can gurgle, throw it away, it has a leak. Since they started making them from plastic, this happens. Don't be discouraged,....get another, keep chuckin' (Muddy,...help the guy out will ya? Stop stepping on his j-bugs and adding lead to the shafts of his cavitrons,....Geeeeez, whatta Mook)

swivel or no swivel?
I only use a swivel on a rig I am trolling, on baits that have an inline cable construction-designed to spin or when chunking in current (saltwater). Never in fresh water.

What was your first boat? Mine was......
17' Manatee to 18' Lema to 25 Grady-White to 21' Steiger Craft along the way, for the freshwater, there was a 12' Lowe light duty (only weighed 72 lbs, great for exploring new water) to 14- Lowe mod v to the current 2 12'- Ranger Comanche Z12 ;D 15' Boston Whaler Rage Jet Proto-type (my most favorite yet. More fun than a barrel of monkeys) and my future boat,...(get over to my site and buy a shirt, I WANT this bad boy!!! )
-
Help please
and when you saw the boat on plane before,...was it the same prop? (GW- My 15' Whaler jet will get 42-43 on GPS and it's only got appx 70 horsies underneath. Hull design? Self planing Sticker rate isn't on the boat anywhere, it was a test boat for Whaler when they started playing with jets. I'm curious what it would say though as I replaced the original power plant with one that was the same block size but higher HP---was 52 is now 70ish)
