  1. the only casting weights i had with me were the 1/8oz. i will try a heavier weight next time but i did not have a problem catching them with the one i had.
  2. i was using a 1/8oz weight on my light power rod. iirc , thats what is suggested and i dont see any light rod with a recommended lure weight of over 1/2oz. i would say 1/4oz to 3/8 would be good.
  3. thanks. while ive always been the type to use what works and not usually try anything else , this is one technique that does work.
  4. nice feesh. i almost prefer catching those over LM. they are really pretty too. i am definitely bringing my rigs down when i go to visit for thanksgiving.
  5. where i was at , i could only manage side arm casts with my 6'6 L rod because of the trees/brush. i couldnt cast as far as i normally could with a crank or t rig but i maybe got it out 30' or so. i would cast it out then let it sit for maybe 20 seconds before i give it a couple twitches. i would do that a few times before lifting the rod tip to 12 o'clock to move the rig in. the strikes felt like taps then once i set the hook , the fight was on. i would suggest anyone who hasnt tried this rig from shore to give it a chance. i already have confidence in it. while i wasnt sure about using EWG gammys since everyone suggests octopus or circle hooks i didnt have a problem setting hooks. the one in the pic threw the hook less than a foot from the bank so i had to reach in the water to lip em'. .. i cant help but laugh at my expression in the picture though. ;D i was trying to say something to my fiance while she was taking the pic.
  6. thanks. i would guess about 18" , maybe more.
  7. i dont know why ive never tied this before , but man is it great. i was only out for an hour or so but landed two fish on the DS. first one was a pound and some change (didnt get a pic) , the second was two or three but she fought like a pitbull. i was using a zoom super fluke jr in baby bass color with a 1/0 ewg gammy.
  8. wow man. glad i didnt meet up with you this weekend ;D !! but on a more serious note , thats great you kept your cool. things could of got way out of hand very fast. good job man.
  9. x2. i lost about that in the past 3 or 4 months.
  10. if its hitting the ground in front of you , your releasing the spool too late. it took me a while to get the hang of it. i was only doing side arm casts too untill i went to a few spots that i could only overhand cast. i learned quick.
  11. i guess that will have to do then. one of the ponds i go , is loaded with crappie and maybe an acre in size. some days we will land 12 a piece , others we only land 2 or 3 in a couple hours fishing with the small cranks. i keep seeing those maribou jigs? with the hairs and those roadrunner jigs with the spinners. have you had any more luck with one over the other? i dont want to 'collect' a bunch of crappie tackle like i do bass tackle. i just want to catch them. ;D
  12. i try to stay away from live bait. not to raise an argument , but i feel its more rewarding to catch a fish on artificial bait. from what ive read , they tend to like deeper water , but these ponds are far from that lol.
  13. eh , shes OK. christina aguilera (im sure i wrecked her last name) would be a better pick imo. but like rickrolled said , it would be interesting to see our conversations lol. i would also pick a fishing trip with a pro. not with KVD but ike instead. i think i could BS more with ike than i could with KVD. and ike looks like he could party too. ;D and this ;D ;D
  14. im stuck on shore for a while and i would like to catch more crappie or bluegill since the bass have slowed down. right now i have a 5' UL rod with a 750fb sedona and a 6'6" L clarus with an abu cardinal 801. i usually use smaller cranks like size 3 and 5 rapalas and have had some success. i recently picked up a small pack of 1/16 oz jigs with some 2" powergrubs (single tail) and i havnt cought anything on these. i usually do a steady retrieve but that hasnt landed me anything on the jigs. from what ive read they are easy fish to catch but im having a hard time , at least from shore. i would also like the fiance to be able to catch something and have her fishing experience be more enjoyable. most of the places i go fish for them are smaller ponds less than 5 acres or so. maybe 10ft deep tops in the dead center of the water but on some there is no access all the way around. so how do you guys do it? whats your technique if you dont mind sharing?
  15. i respool too often imo. i fish with mono only. whenever i see the slightest nick in the line , i cut about 2-3 feet above it. or when i get a serious snag and my line noticably stretches , ill cut all that off. maybe every 5-10 outings ill respool. sometimes more or less but thats usually about it.
  16. never had any issues with any of the gammys ive had. ive got into fishing (seriously) maybe a 2-3 years ago and have been using gammys for the most part. ive set hooks on trees and who knows what else and ive never bent or broke one. with the difference in price between owners and the gammys , ill stick with the gammys untill i see something myself that will make me switch.
  17. i was thinking of this , but there is a lot of trees and brush at the spot i was at so im not too sure if i could stand that far back. but i will do the stealth approach next time im out there (probably today). the creek is about 6-8ft wide and gets wider at some parts, and around 3-5ft deep. today i may try a 5" soft bodied swim bait on my BC rig and a spot remover on my light spinning rig.
  18. yeah , its spinning reel. shimano sedona 750. ill try rauls thing first , then ill see about upping the hook size if it comes down to it. theyre a size 10 thats on now but i cant see going too big as the bait is already tiny.
  19. i was fishing from the bank. the way we looked at each other , i know he saw me. he did the ' oh crap! ' thing and took off. that would of been my personal best. ill see about going back tomorrow. since it has been getting cooler and fall is almost here , the fish should be getting up in those small creeks , right?
  20. so i missed what was probably my PB largemouth today. i was fishing a creek that came off this lake. i was throwing a 3.5" bass magic swimbait under some trees. as i was reeling the bait back in , i was about to lift it out the water when this huge fish , probably 6-7lbs , came out of no where and inhaled it .... i set the hook too early > > :'( :'(. he saw me , i saw him and he was gone. we made eye contact and everything. i had to leave shortly since i was running late to meet up with the woman. i made a couple casts right after with the same bait , then a spot remover but i think he took off and so did i. my question is , when you guys miss a fish , what do you follow up with? same bait? slower presentation?
  21. ah , gotcha. thanks.
  22. i cast kinda in between a smooth and fast cast. ill focus more on that next time im out.
  23. havnt tried braid yet. still a bit pricey for me at the moment. im not sure i understand your post, raul. :-?
