  1. I have had great success with the paca craw in about every size but according to Hookset I have to try the Rage Lobster.
  2. good advice, thanks Catt!!
  3. some of my best memories are fishing with my dad and granddad around the cypress trees in the Chowan River in NC with a long (fiberglass) cane pole. We caught all kinds of bluegill and the occasional bass or catfish would really get you going.
  4. Thanks I will give it a try. Will this get the mud line (stain) off too?
  5. I can tell you that I want one!! A guy at a local tackle shop was telling me about one of his customers that has the larger HDS with the structure scan and he said the graphics and clarity at which you see the structure either from the side or with the down scan (not sure if my terminology is correct) is just amazing. This particular guy has 2 units linked with the structure scan and had about $5000 tied up in it though. I hope to end up with the HDS5 that you mention.
  6. great job, sounds like it would be scary fun!!
  7. I fished with "Hookset's" cumara/stradic combo earlier this week and it is simply awesome. This setup could be used for other baits as well and I am glad he got it as I may be snatching it off the deck of the boat every now and then!!
  8. I always check my drag before starting to fish but have had my drag to back off (I guess from my rods bouncing around) but if you can react quick enough you may be able to thumb your spool to increase the drag.
  9. a fish is to a fisherman what a drink is to an alcoholic
  10. What do you use to get the stains off of your jack plate?
  11. Catt - I agree. I am 6 foot tall and flip with a 7' 0" and a 7' 6" and they work fine for me. I think the 8'0" would be too long for me. I also agree that it is good to go out and say I am going to fish a jig exclusively today or this week but make sure it is a time when the jig bite is, or should be, on. My partner ("Hookset" on this board) and I forced ourselves to fish the jig on several trips this spring and because of that we caught fish and it did wonders for our confidence and we have both had a jig tied on for almost every trip but only use it when and where cover and conditions call for a jig.
  12. I have got to try some of that yo-zuri hybrid line.
  13. I have had good luck with the sweet beaver, yum wooly hog and the zoom baby brush hog but seem to have the best luck with the smallie beaver. I seem to only be able to use a 2/0 hook with it but have not lost any fish. I do seem to have to replace them after 1 to 2 fish though.
  14. We have had a similar thing happen in a pond in southeast Virginia. We take a small john boat around the pond and put a chicken liver on a rod with a bait clicker out behind the boat while we are bass fishing. We have "accidentally" caught several lm bass.
  15. Glen, I was going to say the same thing .....if only he had caught it on a corndog!!
  16. I have had good success with the DT series of Rapalas and have not had a lot of trouble hanging them up.
  17. I have a 6'6" medium Series One spinning rod, it didn't cost much and it has performed flawlessly for the last 6 years.
  18. my partner purchased some earlier this year and we have both been using it with no problems.
  19. I didn't read close and ordered a bunch of these a few months back. They work, BUT ......... they are the same size as a lead weight and they are soft, it actually feels like they are covered in rubber or plastic, I can pinch the large end totally distorting the shape and it pops right back into place. Not sure if they absorb scent but each pack did come with a small tube of yum attractant. I also ordered some real tungsten weights (5/8 ounce I think) there were 2 in a pack for around a dollar - this was a smokin hot deal and I have been carolina rigging with them ever since.
  20. The new river is great for wading or floating for small mouth and smith mountain lake isn't too far away at all. Virginia Tech has a bass club that won a national title one year so you may contact them or join them too.
  21. I fish Smith Mountain regularly and love it. If anyone is making a trip feel free to contact me and I will be glad to share current conditions, water temp, clarity, etc. Great place to bass fish for large mouth, small mouth or stripers.
  22. yes that is wild, I checked Snopes.com to see if this was an urban legend but nothing shows up yet so this may be the real deal.
  23. I own a number of the Curado's and they have served me well. I fish with hookset and have used his Core before and it is unbelievably lightweight and smooth BUT, for the money I will continue to buy the curado. Hey Hookset ......... if you were to purchase a chronarch I would give an unbiased opinion on which is better!!
