My addiction.
Fish 7 days a week, 2 times a day........early morning, then later in the afternoon, is that an addiction?

Biggest Fish You Ever Hooked
Caught many good sized Marlin, and other species on charters, but that isn't fishing. The Captain or mate rigs the line, rod is in the rod holder and you wait while trolling, you supply the muscle and mate boats the fish.......fun for sure. I consider my largest catches where I'm in control of the action, private boats and beach fishing. I fish pretty light ( only spinning) 2 150# lemon sharks back to back, took 3 hours. Jacks in the 30-35#range my favorite, and Tarpon over 100# from the beach, love sight casting.

Driving by bodies of water....DO YOU
Always have a rod with me, freshwater from January to end of April, saltwater rod from May to end of December. I think the fish look at the calender.

Gammy EWG hooks: Hookup problems
Only soft baits I use are flukes and switched back from EWG to a standard 4/0 worm hook, hook up ratio has greatly increased.

the umbrella rig
Short answer is YES, but modified, the rig is a spreader and very similar to an umbrella rig. We used the rig for silver bass using live minnows, catch them 2 at a time. Been 50 years since I've used that set up. BTW are you from Rode Island or Rhode Island ?

More Important: Rod or Reel
ROD, without a doubt ! The rod supplies the casting distance, gives the backbone to handle larger fish and furnishes the sensitivity. On a side note I purchased a new rod last week ( caught a 30# Jack with an old reel I had). Went into Bass Pro this morning to buy a new reel for it and got my ego stroked even more when the staff was ooing an ahing over this rod. Tsunami airwave inshore split handle 8' med 8/17 rod and light as a feather with a solid backbone.

Briaded line question
I use nothing but braid on about 20 spinning outfits, I do not like mono. I always use as leader, cut mine from Ande and gave up on floro leaders after seeing no real difference. My rule of thumb is doubling my line strength, 10#line, 20# leader and so on. Go with your own comfort.

Big Knife and fishing?
Only for offshore fishing in case I want to cut bonita strips.

Unorthodox techniques?
Tarpon fly on a spinning rod, with and without a casting bubble.......... often hand pulling the line in. Do the same exact thing in the swash at the beach for snook.

Question: Spinning vs. Baitcasting
I fish exclusively with spinning gear for fish on a par with stripers, using braid 15 or 20#. As your price range is 50-$75.00 there good choices in spinning, but don't forget the importance of the rod. I won't recommend one over another but in that price range there are good abu's and pflueger, 4000 series, using a med 17 lb or med hvy 20 lb rod, sensitivity is not issue when fishing for these species.

Snaps? Anyone use them?
Recommended by every guide or charter captain I've been with is a loop knot, which I used for years until about 8 months ago. As of late I have been using 3/4 duolocks for both freshwater and inshore fishing with zero reduction in lure action and strength to land medium size fish in the 20-30# range.
-
Thinking about switching to braid
Smart move, I do the same. I use nothing but braid for both salt inshore and freshwater, 10-15#. My leaders are about 15-18" so no need to run thru the guides. I have never seen any significant difference in floro leader compared to mono, I cut mine from Ande and the only time I tie line to line is fishing for Mackerel, they are notorious for striking the swivel instead of the lure.

Tax refund
Better to owe than to get a refund. Owing only means you have not paid enough withholding or quarterly estimates, but have been able to earn some interest before filing. The IRS does not pay any interest on monies paid up front in the form of your weekly withholding.

Fresh/Salt Water spinning reel
The stradic fi 4000 is a great reel, I have one myself. IMO it is designed to be an inshore reel not offshore, but excellent for casting weed lines. For drifting with cut bait I'd go with a beefier reel like the spheros 8000, if you like Shimano, other good reels in that price range. Fishing cut bait you just never know what's swimming by.

badonk-a-donk
Bomber makes good saltwater lures and jigs. Giving the nature of snook I wouldn't get overly excited about this bait or any other. When snook are on they will hit anything and I mean anything, and when off will hit nothing. That lure reminds me of the Mirrorlure line, which I use for bass. Just about any bass bait will work for snook and vice versa snook bait will work for bass. I bought a clearance lure by Storm for a buck, lipless twitchbait bait with bendable tail to promote different actions and the snook have loved it. Glad I read this post, I forgot I had it

UPDATED 5/5/2010 Shad poppin, bass jumping, can't get strike?
That fishing spot sounds just like my honey hole. I use a fluke, weedless, any color will do and probably average 15-20 strikes per hour, often more. Half the time they miss the fluke and hit the lily pad or get tangled so bad in the pads that a 10 ton hoist with steel cables would not be enough. I may land only 2 or 3 bass in that hour, if I'm lucky. I fish this spot because it's a challenge.

If You Caught a Record Fish...
I carry no scale, tape measure or camera and care less about records. That being said if I catch a very large fish of any species I am more than happy to share my info so others may get a great thrill too.

Fresh/Salt Water spinning reel
First question is, have you ever caught a dolphin? There is no similarity between a dolphin and a LMB. It is just as common to catch a 20#+ dolphin as it is a 5 pounder. That being said the smallest reel I would use is 4000 series with both line capacity and a great drag. Second question, are you casting weed lines or drift fishing? For drift fishing I use an 8000(spheros) reel and casting I mostly use a 5000(medalist). I own most of the aforementioned reels and 1 reel that is a definite pass is the supreme, it does not have corrosion resistant bearings and will fail in time, mine has been grinding for the last 3 months. In the under $100 market the Pflueger President xt is a good choice, bit heavy but very smooth and and built for saltwater, imo the rod is slightly more important than the reel. You may be fishing for a 5 pounder, chances are you will catch something way bigger, 2500 or 3000 reel doesn't get the job done for offshore fishing, like taking a knife to a gunfight.

Banner catch
A few pods of mullet were around this morning, other than that not much bait. I have been surpirsed at the number of snook I've caught on the beach this year, it usually doesn't perk up until water hits about 80*. The Boynton area is know at "the dead zone", fishing way better north of Palm Beach inlet. All my snook and jacks have been caught with a $2.50 silver spoon, all you really need. Before the winds last week we were catching sails, dolphin, cobia and kings......be out there again later this week.

Blue Tilipia
Those blue tiiapia will put up a nice fight, have had success using a crappie jig. Lost a lot due to the cold.

Banner catch
Beach has been decent for snook the last few weeks and good sized jacks, most around 8#. Hit the beach this morning and conditions were not favorable, west wind and flat seas, caught one small snook maybe 26". Then I see a school of bait being busted so I cast and get slammed instantly, a jack no doubt. It must have taken me down the beach a good 1/4 mile and nearly spooled my 200yd+ of 15# PP before I started to make headway, finally beaching this little guy. My foot measurement puts it about 33 or 34", probably in the 30# range give or take a little bit. 7'6 redbone med 8/17# & #40 soron reel, this is what I call fishing.

I got jumped today
Absolutely true ! Lots of money in golf equipment and most manufacturers are on the bandwagon with a full range of clubs and balls. I don't say any one brand is better than another, just what's fits your style and feels comfortable, even clones are well made. Sub 10 handicaps, it's the age of technology, way different in the 50's & 60's. Drivers, 43" persimmon head vs Ti head on a 45 or 46" shaft= longer drives. Blades vs cavity back, cavs way easier to hit and your irons are stronger your modern 9 iron is more like a 7 or 8 iron, more control especially with square grooves still legal for recreational golf. Blades are better for working the ball, but today is a power game with less people "playing shots". Hybrids, toss out those 2-3-4 irons, you don't need them today, when first introduced they were called " rescue clubs". The ball is real hot today compared to the old balata( mine all had smiles in them when I first learned). I think the technology is great, who doesn't want to play better? My scores are still pretty decent compared to 30 years ago, my skills have diminished and I'm not nearly as strong but having as much fun. I'm sure if I pulled out my Macgregor xp270's I bought in 1960 I'd embarrass myself on the course.

Orange Dr, Davie
You can fish that canal west from the spillway at 441 fro a long way. LMB, peacocks, tarpon and snook.

Personal attacks are verboten ! Not a brag merely pointing out that ping is not the shimano of golf clubs as was stated in another post, it isn't what you hit but how you hit it. Just saying golfers are always looking for that magic bullet........it doesn't exist. In modern day golf, Tiger plays Nike, I'm sure he would have faired just as well using Ping or Callaway.
