  1. Not familiar with Destin but I fish the beach just about everyday in the Delray area. To fish the beach all you really need is a spoon ( piece of piano wire if fishing for mackerel), nothing else. Jerkbaits soft and hard work fine as do top lures and feathers. The only time I use something different than a spoon is for my own change of pace, most beach fisherman down here walk with but 1 lure on their rod and maybe a backup in their pocket. For saltwater ( inshore )it's all about tide, wind and the presence of bait, no bait no fish..........go bass fishing.
  2. A 12 year old in handcuffs for a non violent crime..........Glad to see a class action suit by the NY civil liberties union, I'd be calling for dismissals from both school and police.
  3. Symetre for tuna and 3 hour fights? C'mon gimme a break, comparing a symetre to a tiagra is like comparing a Kia to a Bently The Shimano offshore line up isn't the same, the spinners like stella and sargossa are truly very fine reels, my 2 spheros have been falling out favor and I may replace my 8000 with a sargossa. As far as conventional reels, tld's are and toriums are real workhorses and widely used on charters, the upper tier of offshore Shimano conventional is top notch. I have a charter captain for tuna living a few doors down from me( from New Jersey but is a snow bird for the winter) he uses nothing but Penn, spinning and conventional, not pitting Penn against Shimano in that arena, but that's his choice.
  4. I have a soron 40 that I use for larger fish and I also have a cardinal 802, same as the soron which has pulled many 20+ in as well, they are really fine reels. I put an 804 handle on my 802 which was a great upgrade for only 10 bucks.
  5. Severe depression is the sympton, not the cause, I'm not talking about a bad day on the lake or your dog eating your favorite pair of socks, but mental disorders that require therapy and drugs. In my signature line it says I'm a proud supporter of JARC, if interested google it to see what it's about. It addresses this problem to a T. We build homes for these mental ill to live a life with some dignity, under supervision of course. My entire family has been involved with well over 20 years.
  6. An established charter boat captain, if he were using Shimano equipment would probably use nothing less than a stella. A guide may use a lesser product but most people bring their own equipment with a guide anyway. The supreme is lighter, smoother and has a better drag than the symetre, I prefer the handle on the supreme too. 3 supremes, 2 fresh and 1 salt, yes saltwater and no damage ( shimano says their mg reel is approved for saltwater)over 1 year of service on all and each like new. I'm going to put an 8040 on an 8'6 rod for a mock surfcasting outfit. Pure fishing is about the best in the business for customer service, Quantum also is very good 48 hour turn around fresh, 24 hour salt. Shimano was 4-5 weeks for me and negated my warranty on top of it. Now a stradic fi for 119 is a great deal, I logged in but they wanted 159 from me.
  7. This is not even a close contest, supreme is superior in every way and now even cheaper with the trade in program. Anything under a saros is not worth msrp and anything over a stradic is price overkill for a recreational fisherman. Shimano, over rated and over priced.
  8. I just go everyday and use the same 2 or 3 lures and always catch fish, what's to think about? I'm going fishing to think about nothing, I like that.
  9. Freshwater, afternoons, saltwater, it's all about the tide and wind direction( inshore).
  10. For me using any artificial scent insults my integrity as a recreational angler.
  11. The white amur is actually a minnow and in their native China can reach 100#, but smaller here in the states. They are vegetarians and I have caught only 2 on artificial lure after thousands of casts. Down here people catch them on bread, berries from trees or using a roe bag.
  12. Brian you make some good points and I feel for you, but this is the American way, sorry to say and it's no wonder the world rankings in education show us far below the #1 spot. I get riled when I see seniors voting down millage for education saying that their kids are thru with school, don't they realize education is the future. IMO a teacher is a professional and they are underpaid.
  13. Wow, what an absolutely asinine statement from someone with little to no actual experience with depression. I guess NIMH are just wasting their time, huh? All of the people suffering with depression just need to think happy thoughts and it'll all get better. : Underlined for emphasis. I agree with him. Some people see commercials on tv about depression then they think they have the symptoms because they're having a crappy week or whatever and then they go to the doctor and get pills to help them with a problem that isn't really there. I don't deny that it's a real medical condition, I just think it's grossly over-diagnosed. I don't think there is any questions that some doctors over medicate, but I value the opinion of a doctor or pharmacist over any person just working in the field with no educational background. If anyone knows of people that have bi polar or turrets syndrome than you know medications are needed, in many cases there is a trial and error process to find the right drug. My 15 yo grandson has both and medications work wonders, most of the time. These are real mental disorders, not an attitude problem. We have 3 pharmacists on that side of the family, one being a teaching professor, we stick with their opinions.
  14. JFrancho, one of these days when I make up some new ones I'm going to send you a couple of cuda tubes, I bet they would be great for pike and muskie. I make 2 styles, 1 like this and another with a 12/0 limerick hook, that gives it a spinning motion, If I remember I will take a pic of one those, in my car. We make them better than what you can buy. http://www.tackledirect.com/sea-striker-cuda-tubes.html
  15. For freshwater I only need 1. My favorite jerkbait over the last few years has outproduced every competitor combined. It's only $2.99 and hard to find........Blaze minnow, their top lure is great too. They are far from the most durable but who cares if they catch fish.
  16. I always have a freshwater rod in the car and on it ready to go is zoom super fluke. In my part of Florida the water is not deep and many high weeds in the canals, it's the perfect bait for me. I have experimented with rage tail with poor success, only to put a fluke back on and it produces. I work it weedless and as a top lure or barely submerged, not fussy on color as long as they are shade of white or light. For pond use I like storm with an exposed hook. I dislike any of the worms, not that they don't produce but I just don't care for that style of fishing.
  17. WD 40 is not recommended by any one I ever talked to in the reel cleaning business, it's crap. A shimano tech turned me on to corrosion block and boy was he right, it's the best product I have ever used, my reels are far smoother than factory. As far as the exterior of the reel, I do nothing except in the case of saltwater reels, simple rinse with water and sometimes a spray of salt x.
  18. Can we go back to the 60s and 70s? Were you there? I was and what I saw in the age of sex, drugs and rock n roll was most people that lived that lifestyle the attributing factor was " peer pressure", most I knew came from solid family backgrounds, my parents never had a drink in their life and I was raised in a deeply religious home. Conservative or liberal means nothing!! I've seen the gamut run, scores of people I knew died, others put their entire lives up their nose and many with the same habits prospered, becoming doctors, lawyers and successful business people. I'll leave my own personal experience out only to say it was colorful for nearly 40 years, I owed or part owned 5 companies all at one time. We raised our kids well, 1 was clean and became a teacher , artist and a classically trained concert pianist, the other had problems from peer pressure and to be sent away for drug rehab, today she is a corporate attorney and a published author on child adoption( 2 books ). My wife thought she rather have them at home than in someones backseat, Sunday mornings it was always breakfast for 6 not for 4 and no std's and no pregnancy, my wife made sure of that. It always doesn't turn out this well. Ghetto problems are of a different nature and cause which would be getting away from this thread.
  19. With all due respect to Mike, in no way can you compare the power of a northern or muskie to that of a lmb. I love catching bass, but honestly I've had seaweed giving me tougher battles.
  20. You'd think they could ship/sell it to an aquarium or zoo where it would not be used for shows and have extremely limited interaction with people. Not a bad point you raise but now we enter economics. How much longer will this whale live and does the cost of new housing justify the expense? After 3 episodes of tragedy and me being left of liberal on almost everything, I still support the death penalty in this case.
  21. This whale needs to be put down, it won't survive in the wild. Peta's position is that marine animals should be left in the wild, they also favor robotic animals for theme parks. Have yet see in print whether they favor animal life over human life. I like the shows but sometimes bad things happen as with the case of many dangerous occupations I'm not a Peta supporter, but they are not always wrong.
  22. If it's mono I make sure to troll the line out, I've had mono on spare spools for the longest time with no adverse effects.
  23. I've used graphite reels with no problem, however it is not my choice, mg or alum for me. A true quality saltwater reel will not corrode, it's made for those conditions. The Abu soron is my go to saltwater reel, you may be fishing for mangroves and hook into a cubera, you need good equipment.
  24. JFrancho is the expert in this area, I haven't fished for pike since I moved full time to Florida. The rod should be matched for line and lure size. The pike itself is of little concern, a 28" pike can easily be landed on medium equipment, especially if from a boat with a net.
  25. The 800 series has two bearings on the spool, as far as mid closing of the bail, I have 3 of them it's never happened. My 804 is my #1 snook/tarpon outfit, gets my favor over both my stradic and my cabo of the same size, this outfit never leaves my car, it's always with me.
