  1. In 1 of my small ponds there are 2 peacocks swimming around and I don't know who put them there. 3 years of trying couldn't catch them, then using a crappie jig I caught one of them 3 days in a row, they are noticeable different so I know it's the same fish. 1 year has passed and I haven't caught them again, but I still see them swimming around.
  2. I'd go with the sahara 3000, noticing you're in Va this reel can be used for double service, fresh and saltwater. It has a-rb bearings, aluminum frame and can hold plenty of line especially if you use braid, I like nothing heavier than 20#, being a little less than the symetere you could purchase a second spool, 1 braid 1 mono. I looked at this reel a few days ago and I like it it a lot, didn't feel much different than my stradic. Shimano has recently put on it's web site that this reel is approved for saltwater........for me it's a no brainer.
  3. Muddy, as in any sport it's the number of wins against top competition, not money won. Year by year prize funds keep increasing, if Jack Nicklaus had won his tournaments today a good bet his total earnings would surpass Tiger Woods. As it stands he is way down on the money list, but maybe the best ever to play.
  4. SouthFla, thanks for the heads up, although the beach and inlet look tempting. I hear those stripers are awesome, would love to get up there one day, I know nothing about them. I do fish with several retired men from Long Island who have told me much about them, they used a surgical tube supposed to resemble eels just like the ones we make down here for barracuda.
  5. Other species board crappie, walleye, trout, panfish and more In my view I would consider any saltwater fish legal conversation under this heading and If I'm not mistaken you have told me to post them here and not under the outings forum, which I have complied with. I've yet to see any negative response from any moderator regarding redfish, kingfish, sea trout or any other saltwater species on the other species board. As far as being ridiculed, yes several futile attempts by only one individual. Perhaps a ban regarding any saltwater fish should be instituted, that way I won't be the only one singled out. For a fact people love to eat them and the people I fish with regard them as game fish, along with pompano and permit (same family) which are awesome as well and make great table fare. Perhaps a few days on a saltwater board or better yet a few days on the surf may be a good learning experience for some to gain insight on the "gameness" of some other species.
  6. Personally I eat very little fish, salmon or cod once in while, a dolphin or grouper if I catch one or flounder. I fished out of the Palm Beach inlet today caught a nice mutton and yellowtail, but gave them away. I never ate jack or cuda but everyone tells me how great they are. Speaking about the Palm Beach inlet, a place I always wanted to fish. I want to fish the beach or inlet from shore but parking seems to be a huge problem. I have never seen too many people there so it seems there is little pressure.........After my outing I cruised the area and there is a public beach with free parking just north of the bridge, sign only says for mall and beach use. I ask, is fishing not a beach use?
  7. Ted Kennedy passed away, I will miss him.
  8. Fresh water Mich, Florida, New Jersey, Mass,Wisc, Minn, NY Ontario, Manitoba, every great lake except Ontario Saltwater Florida, Mass, New Jersey, Ca, Texas, La, Costa Rica, Mexico, Belize, Israel
  9. I see people once in a great while using spinning gear upside, usually a woman who has no idea regarding the physics of the spine of spinning rod. More difficult to cast properly and a nightmare to reel backwards and play a fish if the reel is on top. Bulk of my freshwater pond casting is one handed like side and underarm flick, I'm casting to an area, not open water and distance is not my objective. Surf of pier it's 2 hands overhead, distance is needed and power to buck a hefty wind, also the equipment is a bit too heavy for one hand.
  10. As far as your auto premium being increased I rather doubt it. This is a comp claim and not a collision claim, different set of guidelines, although they may vary from state to state. No sense in to getting into the state differences of a "no fault" collision claim as this does not apply in this case.
  11. When I was 5 or so my dad taught me both casting with spinning and b/c overhead, now both overhead and sidearm or backhand are natural.
  12. I do it the same way with spinning gear, I have small hands so a small foregrip poses no problem. Over the years without thought my grip has moved upwards from the traditional, I feel have more leverage when handling a larger fish and I like the rod butt tucked under my armpit.
  13. Never cared for Andy Kaufman, Eddie Murphy gets my nod for the best of SNL. I'm talking post SNL and stand up, but his movies.
  14. But the first day of the rest of your life
  15. Just got her 1 st pair of glasses and claims she doesn't need them.........lol, taking a braile class now.
  16. Only 1 7' freshwater rod that I just put back into service a few days ago, prefer the control of a 6'6 for freshwater, it casts far enough. Saltwater is a different animal altogether. I let my wife do the bragging, she likes a long rod 7'
  17. Shimano and a lot of other Mfrs will often designate reels designed for more/heavier line, within a Series, with larger numbers. Is that what you are asking? Yes that is what i was trying to get at. I saw on the site it lists the different aspects of the diff models but i did not understand the numbers such as Line Cap: 6/200, 8/140, 10/120 Line cap..6 lb test the reel will take 200 yds of line, 140 yds of 8 lb test, and so on..number of yds decreases as the reel size gets smaller, i.e. the 1000 will hold less line that the 2500 or 3000. I hope this is what your asking, sometimes my brain, shesa no worky to good..lol Not only the above information but weight difference and the 2500 has twice the drag, 15# as compared to 7# for the 1000. Get the one that fills your needs.
  18. Mrlite, Yes jacks are awesome and they go up to 45# and are great to eat. Hard to imagine that a number of months ago some nameless individual, obviously with no knowledge (being a freshwater fisherman), called them a "trash" fish, my guess is he had heard that statement from another no knowledge fisherman. I can tell you first hand pound for pound jacks outfight tarpon.
  19. Lions, last good season 1957 and I listened to them on the radio, home game blacked out on tv against the Browns, they still were only 8-4 for the season, but won championship. I don't know if you remember Bobby Layne, one of the greatest last 2 min quarterbacks, he always played stoned to the gills. Tigers have always been a good franchise.
  20. Bad break........sorry to hear but I'm glad you didn't catch them. I thought Detroit was a rough place until I moved to Florida, they are crazy here. People just as soon pull a gun or knife on you down here, hear stories all the time. One thing I've learned, as big and bad as you think you might be there is always someone bigger and badder and I don't want to meet him. If I'm not mistaken vandalism is covered under the comp of your insurance policy, little or no deductible as a rule and personal property is covered under homeowners, usually a high deductible
  21. If you want to get technical grass carp (aka white amur ) are the world's largest minnow and I have heard they eat fish eggs as well as vegitation.
  22. As I said the camera is the kiss of death, 2 hours and no strike. Left and hit the beach, this time camera was left in the car and 45 minutes later zip................I said to myself " last cast " and boom I got nailed as soon as I hit the water with a silver spoon, nice 3# jack crevelle, had forgotten how awesome fighters they are, made my day.
  23. Most of the community ponds in my part of Florida have little or no cover and you can walk completely around. About 5 years ago I started rig a plastic worm and heave it out as far as I could then just start walking around the pond, I called in shore trolling. Some days it was killer method and other days it wasn't, like all fishing. I've heard stories of 8 # bass in my ponds, "one old timer" showed me a pic of his 8, to date my largest on my home pond is 6#
  24. Never been a big fan of the lower level shimano spinning reels, until a few days ago. I was looking at new reels and put my hands on a sahara, I liked it right from the git go and thought it was a perfect freshwater reel, I'm going back to buy it.
  25. 1. camera, kiss of death 2. my arms are too short to hold up 30"+ fish and snap the photo 3. no one around that speaks English let alone knows how snap a pic 4. 1 less piece of gear to carry 5. someone snaps pic on their camera and doesn't email photo 6. charging my batteries and taking my camera, bet I don't get a strike and I f I do won't be anything over 25", too small for a pic.
