Yes I took offense and yes the city is on shaky ground now, but insulting a city is insulting it's people. When a city is mentioned it's generally accepted as talking about it's entire metro area. In that regard Detroit has wonderful areas that are as beautiful as any in the country, Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe, Birmingham and Ann Arbor just minutes away (home of Univ of Mich., without argument one in the finest in the country). Detroit has a vibrant cultural center, top notch symphony, great jazz and blues clubs and great theatre, much thanks to auto industry contributions and what I miss most is it's food. Is there fishing there? HAHA. inland lakes galore just everywhere, the great lakes with most freshwater species you can think of. I can take you places for LMB, smallies, walleye, perch, muskie and Sturgeon within minutes of the waterfront on the river. You bet I'm proud of that town, had a great life there. I saw nothing in the post to suggest humour only ridicule, my bet is the poster has never been there and has no first hand knowledge.

I take it personal, insult the city you're insulting the residents and I'm one of them. The vast majority of red wing fans don't live in Detroit, city residents can't afford a ticket. If you choose to bad rap fans, ok, that's a different matter. but losing teams around the world have showed poor sportsmanship. Btw, Quincy Jones isn't from Detroit, born in Chicago and raised in Seattle, but we'll take credit anyway. Lot's of great music came out of Detroit, no mention of the Supremes or the 4 tops

Luck is what catches fish and luck is created. In other words being in the right place at the right time with the right presentation and having a cooperative fish. Does the price of equipment matter? Only to an extent, less chance of failure, smoother, better drag, but there is a limit. To the average recreational fisherman there is a level where the extra dollars can be a waste, better off spending the difference on fishing lessons. Will and stella out fish a stradic? As in golf, you can't buy a swing.

I have hired many many people over 30 years as the owner of the business. For the most part heavily tattooed people do not apply for positions where they are dealing with corporate heads, but exceptions have occured. To refuse employment based on a person's look is something I could never do, if qualified and showed a work ethic that would be good enough for me, until proven otherwise, everyone needs a chance. I don't think it's an issue of being old fashioned, I've met conservative people that wear them. For me it's an issue of doing the right thing.

All fishing is relaxing for me and the best thing I did was give up my 34 footer before I moved to Florida. I walk the ICW or the beach most mornings watching the sun come up, no pressure, no stress and sometimes no fish. I do this daily and never get tired of it, the exercise isn't bad either. In the afternoon I do a little bass fishing for a couple of hours and still no pressure, if there was I wouldn't do it. I'm there for the enjoyment, size and numbers are unimportant to me.

Whatever is still on my rod from the last outing, I like keeping things simple.

You bet ! Experiment to find your niche, in time everyone will know what they need and what they prefer. Most likely will make a better fisherman out of you as well. Free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it.

The snook bite is good, not great, but good. Getting 3-4 most mornings averaging 6-10lbs with an occasional 20 pounder. Best time is 45 minutes before dawn just before the bait shows up.

I agree 100% I owned a scrap metal company 30 years and in times of high commodity prices the volume of business I had was so significantly higher that I needed additional employees and equipment to handle it all. The pendulum does swing the other way. I still keep in touch with some people in the industry( retired now ) and I'm hearing China talk again and business is starting improve a bit.

Makes perfect sense to me and being right handed I prefer to crank with my left hand and control the rod with my right. As far as this winch theory that I've read numerous times, I just don't buy it. Spinning or b/c the rod handles the fish, both types of reels employ drags and retrieve line. When handling a larger fish I pump up reel down with spinning or conventional. What if a spinning reel was designed where the spool was mounted like a b/c, would that be a winch?

I just got back from Detroit where I paid $3.19. Gas prices generally go up in summer as more motorists are hitting the road. Demand for oil has been increasing world wide along with other commodities like copper. This is a leading indicator that some believe the recession is easing, but not over. Employment figures are a lagging indicator and jobless claims have also started to ease. Higher gas prices are not always a bad thing and at $3.00 a gallon it's just keeping pace, look at what other goods and services cost 20 years ago. Many vehicles today get significantly better mileage they did years ago which would mean a smaller percentage of our income goes towards fuel. Very true that markets rise and fall with expectations.

Absolutley agree !! I only use duolock style. Virtually weightless and does not affect lure action, especially topwater. I would tie before ever using a snap/swivel.

The use of swivels and snaps should be determined on what you are fishing for. As most here are freshwater fisherman I found it really makes little difference and there is a lot to be said about the line twist and ease of changing lures. For those that fish saltwater different "rules" apply based on your target species. Any novice saltwater fisherman or someone planning a trip shoot me a pm and I'll pass on some local knowledge.

I only use 10# PP for bass on medium rods. Wind knots are caused by a "loop" forming when jigging, popping a topwater or twitching a jerkbait. Constant reeling should not produce a wind knot and I can't remember the last time I had one. A couple of my reels have had PP on for well over a year, faded and frayed it's as strong as the day I spooled it up. In saltwater I get them from time to time, but mostly on a fresh spool, after a couple of weeks of "weathering" the number of knots are greatly reduced. I'm a believer.

Warm water brings the fish in. Over the weekend we were fortunate to have the incoming tide, 3 of use caught 7 barracuda 40 -48", maybe 18-30#.

In Florida a hot name is D.O.A., intended for saltwater but many of us use it for freshwater and does a great job.

Smartest post I've read. Everything sold catches fish, you need to give it a chance and learn how to use it.
