boat insurance
I have State Farm. My suggestion to you with insurance is make sure your policy has the coverage you need. The lienholder of the boat requires X amount of coverage. You want to make sure you have coverage for all the add-ons, rods, tackle, etc. You want coverage for an on the water accident and if your boat gets broken into. Also verify if your involved in a traffic accident while trailering does your auto or boat insurance pick it up.

losing my job...
I don't know what you're talking about. The state of Illinois started lotto in the early eighties with all proceeds going for education. There can't be any budget shortfalls. Sorry to hear. I'm in the trades and last year was the slowest it's been in the last 15 years. I got my hours worked statement for 2009 from the union yesterday and basically didnt work for 6 weeks last year. It's now friday and I've clocked in about 20 hours this week. What I don't get is how they determine where the cuts happen. You cut education, you dumb down America. Maybe thats the plan. A guy I work with wife got laid off. She's a social worker (paid by the state) that places special needs kids in different programs, housing etc. Her dept. gets closed but we still give handouts to people who IMO don't deserve them. Help the helpless, not the clueless. The state of Illinois is $12 billion in the hole. The jobs that are getting cut are the important ones. Education, police, fire. The people who make the rules and spend the money refuse to sacrifice anything for the good of the people. I apologize if my post is too political.

Climate-Gate Do-Over
Al Gore (moviemaker extrordinare)told you the "Inconvienent Truth" and has since mysteryously disappeared. I hope he's ok. He did such a good job on combating global warming that its too cold now. If he reappeared and started preaching again all that hot air might warm us up a little.

Disability Insurance
X2 I'm in the construction trades. I get coverage from my union although not much. Prior to working for my current employer I worked for a non union shop with crappy insurance and no disability. I had gotten quotes upwards of a couple hundred a month.

TIME TO MOVE TO MICHIGAN
He's probably one of the best crankbait fisherman. That's what won. Everyone was using cranks and lipless cranks. Chitown, not sure if you fish the great lakes much but next to tubes cranks are where it's at.

classic news????
It gets him noticed and makes him money. That might for a fishing show, but it surely doesn't help him win a tournament. I've seen countless posts about Dave Mercer and his theatrics. Funny thing is, I don't mind them on a show. It's his shtick. Same for Iaconelli and his City Limits. And poor Charlie Moore seems to make almost everyone's list of not worth watching based on his silliness. These guys fishing tournaments are pros, and when ounces count, if I was in their shoes, I'd be all business. They score these guys simply by the weight they bring in. They get nothing for style points like in ski jumping or figure skating. I'll admit, it's just me. You can ask anyone who has fished with me. When I land a nice fish, it brings a smile to my face. When I lose a nice fish, I take it in stride, and go back to fishing. I would guess that these guys make more money from lure and tackle endorsements than they do fishing

Anyone ever buy a boat through Bass Pro Shops?
Never bought a boat thru them, but as far as service, my local BPS mechanics test drive boats on a lake I fish. The lake is located 1/2 hr drive from the store. I envision that could rack up some $$$ in repair costs. My mechanic is located on a lake so if the need to test drive the boat arises it's right there. Less labor=less money. Something for you to think about.

Where are all the Illinois Guys ?
Never fished Big Mich but wouldn't mind giving it a shot. Keep me posted From Chicago and never fished the Big Pond? You're missing out. I got a few spots that usually produce and one spot that always produces smallies. You'll also find largemouth in the harbors. Also have a couple of spots on the Chicago River for largemouth and crappie. Try fishing all the breakwalls downtown with tubes especialy the ones outside of Navy Pier. If the bass aren't hitting you can always fish for perch. If you have kids there is non stop rock bass fishing with live bait off of some of the breakwalls.

50$ Baitcaster?
I just bought a Strikeforce but haven't used it yet. I read a review in a magazine which said it's a great reel at that price point.

In a tournament...
I had the opportunity to ask Mike Iaconelli How long do you stay? during a seminar at a fishing show here in Chicago. His answer was no longer than an hour. I have since seen him in an interview on Bassmasters saying to fish every tournament to win. I got to thinking after I listened him. I go into tournements "hoping" to win, not needing to win. If I don't win a tournament I'm still going to eat. When I go to work I need to do well because if I hope to do well I may not have a job tomorrow. If I fish a tourney with the "I need to win" attitude it may be easier to make decisions. Going for the "big bite" may be the way to go. This year I will prepare (prefish)more which should make my decision making easier.

How to Fish a Fluke or soft jerkbait
One of my favorite ways to fish. I prefer Yum Houdinishad, or Zoom Superfluke. I use a med action spinning rod and either floro or braid with a floro leader in most cases. When fishing Lake Michigan I'll use an 8-10lb floro because of the clear water and lack of snags. EWG hook weightless in shallow water skin hooked. Make sure it sits straight on the hook or you'll get line twist and it won't run true. I've also fished deep water 20-30ft rigged on a jig. Tried the double rig but found it awkward, maybe it takes getting used to. As far as color, when I fish Lake Michigan white if its rigged weightless, white or watermelon red flake if I'm jigging it. If I'm fishing inland waters I prefer blugill, baby bass, or smoke shad to "match the hatch" Someone else mentioned dragging across lily pads. I couldn't agree more. Make sure you're using braid or heavy floro in that situation

atypical winter effect fishing?
Being from Chicago the cold is a normal ocurrence. The thing I have noticed is the more snowfall, the higher the lake levels in the spring, and bass will move up into the cover that's not normally there. On the river system I normaly fish higher water means better fishing. They draw down the water after waterfowl season to prepare for spring thaw. To me it seems the high water in the spring really turns on the fish. As far as shad kills, normaly up north they seem to only happen on ponds and smaller bodies of water. I can imagine the cold is very detrimental to the fishing in the southern states.

Marine stereo system
Clarion M475 AM/FM, CD, You can plug in your MP3 and is satelite ready. It comes with 2 speakers and when I had it installed they were able to also use the old speakers(4 total). Sounds much better than the stock stereo that came with the boat.

Where are all the Illinois Guys ?
That 10hp restriction is definitely annoying. Instead of the hp restriction they should make all those lakes "no wake"
