Bassin and Beer
If I go out to dinner with the wife and have a glass of wine or a beer with the meal, I am fully capable of driving home, and if stopped by law enforcement, I would easily be a legal driver. If I go to the lake and sit in a cove and have a beer at mid-day and maybe another near the end of the day a few hours later, I am fully capable of driving my boat, and again would not be violating any laws. My alcohol level would hardly be measurable. There is a big difference between having a beer and a snack at mid-day on the water and drinking a few drinks or beers on the water. In my state, driving a boat while intoxicated is a crime as it should be; however, driving a boat after one beer, for all but the tiniest of human beings, would not even come close to approaching intoxication. http://www.boat-ed.com/mo/handbook/alcohol.htm

How big is my bass?
When I do that and enter it into a bass weight calculator it comes to under a pound - thinkin' my math is wrong! What calculator are you using? The Bass Resource calculator under the Tacklebox menu shows a 20 inch fish with a 14 inch girth is 5.4 lbs. Are you sure you didn't enter just one side of the fish as the girth? Girth is both sides, top, and bottom.

Choosing buzz bait/spinner bait blades
That's a good point to make, Catt. I hope my previous post didn't take away from that point. There are a number of options on spinnerbaits and we should all be willing to try what we can when given the opportunity. For example, I have found that in very muddy water, a large copper or brightly colored single colorado blade works best for me. On some occasions under the same circumstances a double colorado has worked better. I guess some days the bass like a different vibration even under the same muddy conditions. Only the bass know why. I honestly need to try more variations with buzzbaits as I never use them that often.

How big is my bass?
Hold your right hand fingers in the same position you are holding them in the picture and then measure the width. Then determine how many of those widths it takes to equal the length of your fish in the picture. Eighteen or nineteen inches would probably be in the three to four lb range. If the length is 20 inches you're probably at least 4 lbs. Twenty-one inches would put you in the neighborhood of 5 lbs. Of course, these are still guesses. The girth of the fish is important too.

Choosing buzz bait/spinner bait blades
I agree with experimentation but there are limits to how much you can experiment. I tend to use gold, silver, black, hammered, brass, and black nickel the most and I wouldn't say I catch a limited number of fish as the spinnerbait is one of my top lures. If I have counted correctly, you mention 19 different lure characteristics concerning blade color, blade configuration, and blade texture. Add into that the skirt color, the length of the arm, the size and shape of the head, different blades in multi-blade configurations and you get an enormous number of permutations that would tax the abilities of an angler fishing every day to perform a thorough experiment with all combinations. I think that is why fishermen try a few and find the ones that work for them. There isn't enough time to try every combination. And if someone out there thinks they have thoroughly tested all the combinations, revisit your permutations formula from statistics class.
