Search Bait Strategy- Am I Missing Something?
What if they aren't biting search baits? You'll never find much of anything. I've encountered many such days on a highly pressured lake near a metropolitan area. On such a lake and on such a day, I find structure and cover combinations that are conducive to the presence of bass and I fish jigs and soft plastics very similar to what Catt describes in his previous posts.

Finally introducing myself
I don't see anything rude about not introducing yourself. People will get to know you more from your posts than your introduction anyway. Welcome!

New to lake fishing. Help
I would not throw lures at every piece of timber unless it is a small lake. I fish a lake with over 4000 acres of timber. If I threw a lure at every tree without trying to determine which trees are the right ones, my success would be very poor at best. The key to fishing your lake is finding the trees that are on break lines and contours. I know you don't believe it has any contour but even a minor hump, shallow ditch, change in type of rock, change in bottom composition, or change in vegetation can make a difference. These things can be difficult to find and it can take time to learn spots that meet the right set of criteria to hold fish. Take the time to do so and you will be more successful. Study a map to narrow down the spots you want to try, and then go over those spots with a fish finder to find the likeliest areas to fish. Eliminate unproductive water. For more detailed information on fishing structure check out some of the links in the Favorite threads sticky. This is the link: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1205059810

"Talent is overrated" - Geoff Colvin 10,000 hours practice
Dan. stated: I believe to be at the top of any game you have to have that intangible talent in addition to the practiced skills and experience. Someone can be a scientist or mathematician and have highly honed skills of critical thinking and attention to detail, yet he or she may not be able to catch a fish to save his/her life. You don't have to be a genius to be a great angler. You have to have the right type of criticial thinking to do so, whatever type that is. I would bet that IQ and fishing success do not necessarily correlate. I'm sure a certain level of intelligence is necessary for fishing success, but after that the intangible talent kicks in to differentiate the highly successful from the rest of the pack.

Vacation destination ideas
Google and google some more. I don't know what you and your family like to do but here are some ideas. Great Smoky Mountains National Park - Gatlinburg, Tennessee Appalachian Trail (Choose a spot but a long hike probably work with your little ones.) Cape Hatteras National Seashore - North Carolina (Whoops, I guess you are tired of beaches.) Road trip of civil war sites in Virginia and Pennsylvania. There are a few including Gettysburg, PA and the National Civil War museum in Harrisburg, PA. Google every large metropolitan area within 5 hours for attractions. Google every large park, national forest, or recreation area within 5 hours.
