    Welcome to the community, Seanyboy.
  2. Mike, I agree with you that trimming allows for more flexibility and that would be my preference.
  3. Welcome to the community.
  4. If you want to learn these techniques, search for some videos of them online. It is much easier to understand the techniques when watching someone do them.
  5. Anglers would do well to learn how, and when, to fish each category of the basic lures. If knowledge and confidence in the utilization of these lures were developed I don't think we would be so quick to jump on the latest fad. I rarely buy a new lure when it first comes out, sometimes waiting a year or two before buying them if I buy them at all. A new lure has to provide something quite different that my other lures don't have. The KVD silent crankbaits were an exception for me but I bought them before KVD won the Classic with them. I watched a demonstration of them and I thought the cranks rolled over more on their sides than other cranks, creating more of a disturbance and moving more water than any shallow cranks I currently had. Because of this action, they are the only shallow silent crankbait I use on very windy days. I have not been disappointed.
  6. John, tell your buddy in the first pic to watch the position of his middle finger in future fishing pictures. My wife says I have the same problem.
  7. Welcome to the forum.
  8. This is the best bass fishing forum, in my opinion. There is one other very large bass forum that isn't bad, but it doesn't touch Bass Resource. I don't think it is our membership that makes this one better. That is like the mantra of companies that say "Our people are the best and make the difference." Sorry, but there are good and bad people everywhere, in every organization, and in every country. We are no better than any other group of people. What sets Bass Resource apart is the leadership of the site and the direction and format they have provided for it. The leadership is why this site is civil and has a good atmosphere, because they have taken the site in this specific direction. The format and the outline provided by the forum titles prompts our minds to think of interesting subjects to discuss. The other site I mentioned above just doesn't seem to have the interesting subject matter that I find here, but then, I guess that is all in the eye of the beholder. This isn't meant to butter up Glenn or the moderators either. I have butted heads a time or two with them and won't hesitate to try to respectfully express disagreement if we don't see eye to eye. And they are willing to do the same. That kind of honesty is also a great attribute of the site. It is embodied in Glenn's welcome on the introductory threads, "Welcome Home." We are like a family. We celebrate, agree, disagree, support each other, and butt heads with each other but we are always welcome at our home.
  9. I totally agree, and that is what happens when you have more than one fish on the same line.
  10. It is that simple. I've stayed away from this thread because I suspected it could evolve into a discussion about absolutes regarding right and wrong and the subject of a supreme authority creating these absolutes. Whether you believe that absolutes have been decreed by a higher being, or you just believe right and wrong is something that humans have created, I think there is one way to guide your own actions. If you think that an action you are about to take hurts someone else, don't do it. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." This obviously leaves room for debate on some actions.
  11. That's a great response, Tom, and another explanation for what we encounter when fish aren't biting. And I'm sorry that I didn't make my response clearly. You didn't step on anyone's input. When I am working, to save time I sometimes makes posts with quick, short sentences. Sometimes these quick responses can appear to be abrupt but that is not my intent when making them. I just wanted to make sure you read another take on the subject of conditioning that allows for it, but doesn't see it as something that will stop a fish from biting forever.
  12. The Rangers are on the cusp of winning their first World Series. The Cardinals seemed to be in "choke" mode last night going 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. I think Washington managed a good game but I disagreed with some of the decisions by the Cardinals. I am not a La Russa hater but once in awhile he does over-think things and it can lead to some bizarre decisions. If you didn't see the game check out this article. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/tom_verducci/10/25/game.5/index.html Hopefully, the Cardinals can recover in St Louis, but as I stated in the first post of this thread no one has beaten the Rangers in back to back games in approximately two months. Their backs are against the wall.
  13. This is a very interesting subject for a thread. Thanks for bringing it up, deep, and thanks for all the information, WRB.
  14. I didn't. If I had assumed his response was directed at me I wouldn't have mentioned going back and reading my posts. From reading his post I did assume he had not read all the posts which could be an incorrect assumption.
  15. WRB, please read my responses above. I know Catt mentioned this but I said nothing about bass inheriting genes to ignore lures, nor is that the definition of classical conditioning.
  16. I agree with this. It could be argued that bass fleeing things like a trolling motor is an example of conditioning. Otherwise, why would they "turn off?" Are they conditioned to sensing danger when they feel the throb of a trolling motor, are they just naturally afraid of the vibration, or is the vibration of such an amplitude that when it passes through their lateral lines to their inner ear it is uncomfortable? The science is not there to answer such questions with any degree of certainty at this time.
  17. Welcome to the forum, Brian.
  18. I believe conditioning occurs but I agree with most of what you said, Catt, with some caveats. In my opinion, (and I emphasize that this is only an opinion), if a single bass becomes conditioned to a lure the conditioning is not permanent. The length of time that conditioning lasts is debatable based on the limited capabilities of a bass's tiny brain, and the amount of reinforcement received to create the conditioning. If a period of time passes where the particular bass receives no reinforcement (i.e. is not hooked by that particular bait) that conditioning will be lost. As for what that length of time is, I have no idea. There are obviously other extenuating circumstances that must be considered when thinking about conditioning. For example, we have all caught young bass that will bite a lure over and over, sometimes in the same fishing trip. The young bass seems to take longer to develop conditioning.
  19. Derek Holland was awesome tonight. I suspected after the first two innings that it was going to be a long night for the Cardinals. Regarding your second sentence, I'm not sure if that was in response to my post about Pujols or the post following, but just for the record, bragging about Pujols night had nothing to do with talking about the "great" Cardinals offense. Pujols is Pujols. Whether he plays for the Cardinals, the Rangers, or a last place team, he is still one of the greatest players to ever play the game. That cannot be denied, and his night in the third game was one for the ages. Objectively, who he is playing for is irrelevant . I'm not sure what the Cowboys and Rams game has to do with the World Series either. I live in Kansas City and I'm a fan of the lowly Chiefs anyway. I grew up in the southeast corner of the state and was always a Cardinals fan, for both baseball and football. Thank goodness, the football Cardinals moved to Arizona in the 80s or I would probably still be rooting for them.
  20. How about Pujols last night? He tied the record for most hits in a World Series game which was 5 by Paul Molitor in 1982. He tied the record for home runs in a World Series game by hitting 3 which was also done twice by Babe Ruth, and once by Reggie Jackson. He tied the record for RBIs in a World Series Game shared by two other players. And he set the record for total bases of 14 in his 5 hits. He was asked if this was his greatest game and he stated that he wouldn't be able to say that unless the Cardinals win the Series. I agree with his attitude.

I agree with speaking one's mind; however, there is a difference between doing that respectfully and doing it in a condescending, judgmental, or argumentative manner. Over my years on this forum, and well before the +/- button, I have tried to become more respectful while still expressing my own opinion. At times I succeed, and at other times I fail, but it has nothing to do with getting a "smiley" or getting "points in my cool column" as you put it. It is about treating others as I want to be treated. The +/- is very useful for marking fishing posts that I find to be very informative. That is the only time I use it.
