I was introduced to the Texas Rig back in 1972 while the equipment has changed the technique is still the same. The Texas Rig was originally designed to fish a plastic worm but today it is used with any type of soft plastic. We were lead to believe from the title of this topic Snaps on Traps that the author is referring to Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps and if this is indeed the case then by all means use the split ring provided by Bill Lewis. Rat-L-Traps were designed to be fished with a split ring which provides maximum wobble, flash, and vibration. Does this mean one must stay with the split ring? Absolutely not, if you prefer you can use a snap with a swivel which in most cases will allow the Trap to spin on retrieval. One could use a snap with out a swivel with excellent results or one might opt for a loop knot, and then one could tie directly to the Trap all of which are quite acceptable.

I started fishing plastics in the middle 60's with Nick Crème's Scoundrel Worms which aren't exactly soft, later during the 70's it was Mann's Jelly Worms which were not very much like jelly despite the name, now I did use Yum Yum Worms which were way to soft and would only last for 1 bass at most. Through out this wide menagerie of soft plastics they were all capable of producing bass regardless of softness or hardness. My plastic of choice is Gene Larew Salty Ring Worms; the rings give the worm a larger profile while offering less plastic for the hook to penetrate. Gene Larew Lures are manufactured using the finest soft-plastic injection molding equipment in the industry and are the originator of the salt impregnation process. The reason I believe in salt impregnation is that all blood contains salt and if the bass mouths the worm for another second it's worth it. I use attractants for two purposes first as a lubricant because I fish in grass a lot and the attractant helps my plastic baits slide through the grass easier. I use Fish Formula II or Baitmate (clear) with a ½ oz of pure anise oil added; this is to mast any odor my plastic may have pick up.

What I look at when choosing a jig trailer there are 2 things I want to accomplish; over all profile & the rate of fall. My #1 choice is a Gene Larew Hawg Craw which gives a profile that is perfect for coming through grass. During cold water seasons when grass isn't my main cover I'll opt far a plastic chunk. With a chunk I can change the jigs profile by either rigging it like a pork chunk or treading it up the hook. I also like a Zoom Swimming Chuck or Fat Albert Twin Tail during in cold water because they give me a little more action without moving the bait.
