  1. I don't fish weightless, I don't see the point, it cant sink through pads or grass.
  2. In the old days when I didn't know how to fish I would say mono. All I use now is braid, and fluorocarbon. I have caught a few good fish on mono, but my personal bests have been on braid and fluorocarbon.
  3. The 200gtb is the cadillac reel in that class, it has more bearings, a drilled front plate. I love mine, and I can cast anything from a 1/4 oz worm rig to a 3/4 buck tail with ease. If you want a round reel with vbs/six pin braking this is the reel to get.
  4. I use 50, and 65 lb power pro. I have never used tape, mono backing, or a leader. I tried the spiderwire a long time ago and it sucked, I trash talked braid for years until I tried power pro. I get a little cranky when it comes time to re spool because of the price, but just like using fluorocarbon the quality, and numbers of fish outweigh the cost. Good luck, and go easy on the hook set.
  5. Plastics 12lb seaguar red. Jigs I would go with fifty pound power pro, or any spectra braid. 50# fireline is about 10# mono equivalent.
  6. I use a six speed reel for everything but traps, I kick it up to a seven for the lipless.
  7. Any lure under 3/4 ounce should fall slowly when you press the thumb bar. If it slams the ground you have a problem.
  8. a mag c4 8-) do u have link to the outlet catalog or am i missing something??? Do you like being a *****, or do you lack common sense. I cant provide a link, but as I said the catalog store which sits right next to the home store has the c4 mag reels for fifty bucks.
  9. It depends on how you fish. If you're going for the top water bite I would recommend a 7ft m or mh rod with a 6.2:1 reel. If you're live bait, umbrella rigging or trolling I would go with a big round reel with a heavy rod. Good luck.
  10. The bps catalog outlet has the mag c4 new in box for fifty bucks. They take a little fine tuning like a revo sx, but when you get the brake dialed in they work great.
  11. I don't think the reel matters. It comes down to skill, the same goes for casting distance.
  12. I have everything from a steez to a abu c4 on my boat, and when my mom comes to town I have a 33 alongside them.
  13. I think a 6.2:1 works best. The only time I use a slow speed reel is for deep deep cranks, and jigs in deep open water structure.
  14. I would go with silver thread 12lb mono if you can still find it. Braid wont be good for your tops, but it will work great on cranks, jigs and t rigs. Swimbaits have never produced for me so I have no idea on that one.
  15. Get a reel that you can afford, buy some cheap line, and practice. I started both of my kids on mag reels with a 6'6 M cheap rod. My oldest likes the new shimano curado, the little one is pumping me for a daiwa. I can set my steez down and throw my curado the same distance every time. Casting is like golf, the harder you try the worse you do. For a six pin push two in then work your way up, on a mag reel start on ten then work your way down. If you're set on a low profile reel I would suggest any entry level reel from any company, if you want to save some cash a round reel is the way to go for first timers. Good luck.
  16. I have said a few bad things about berkley products, and the KVD conditioner on braid and I stand behind them. I like this board because their is no constant shimano vs daiwa trend.
  17. The big game might work on a spinning reel, since you're cat fishing. I fish everyday, I don't sit around in a fold up chair waiting on a bite.
  18. I used to use mono for all top water, and I think its the best line for anything that skims the pads. I don't have the patience for a top water bite anymore. Braid would be my last choice as a top water line.
  19. Red label fluorocarbon, and power pro. The big game mono might sound like a good deal until you use it.
  20. I get green thumb when I spool the line, and after the first trip. I've heard that the cheap stuff stains your hand.
  21. I went down to the big shop today to get some tilapia xr 100's. I went to high school with the guy in the reel dept so I asked him about the new low pro model, he said it is loud on the cast, and the brakes pop out randomly. This might not happen on the pflueger reels, but a metal spring next to a magnet is a bad idea.
  22. Some of the new bps house reels have the dual brake system. I bought a faulty morris bait caster, the centrifugal weights would pop out on their own witch lead to me having to open the reel and set the brakes on every cast. I took mine back. That was about two years ago, they might have fixed that problem by now. I use a 7 ft mh most of the time for flippin I'll break out my 7'4 H for the real heavy cover or for better distance. Good luck.
  23. It works on mono, fluorocarbon, and supposedly all the cheap braid like fire line, and spider wire. Don't use it on power pro.
