  1. I will concede (since I wasn't there) that the original design intent may have been to winch fish... The reality, however, is that the rod does almost all of the actual heavy moving of the fish. So in today's application, the only way to do that would be to completely lock out the drag... which outside of some swimbaiters who have extremely heavy tackle, does little more than break line and rods. And even those guys normally have to pump the rod get the fish moving towards them. * I don't remember the original thread George responded to but I think that those particular comments may be out of context in this discussion. I would guess it was a historical commentary.
  2. From a practical applications point of view, 2" on a 7' rod won't do much of anything to your hooksets. However, the blank might feel different (action).
  3. You are ruined now!! Might as well start saving because you are going to want to replace all your reels, soon. ;D
  4. Why do you think they are always the problem? ;D Sorry, I figured that's what your brother would say! ...lol
  5. Congratulations!! That's awesome!! Way to stick with it and overcome the obstacles!!
  6. To those that say being loyal is just closed minded, I have to disagree. To ignore the specific reasons why loyalty exists is only looking at part of the story. Take Loomis rods for example. Until pretty recently I was a Loomis IMX guy, had a stable full of them. Why? I like the blanks action better than any other rod I had used. No one else had a rod with that delicate tip that would lock up as tight and stout. It didn't hurt that I felt it was a great value- price vs. performance. I knew that any IMX rod I bought would be liked. No risk. I'm not a Shimano die hard but I do have more shimano reels than any other... why? Each reel was purchased with a specific set of requirements and "needs" on my end. It just so happened that Shimano made the reels that best fit the criteria and my hand. But the fact that Shimano offered a great performing reel at a fair price and has a great reputation doesn't hurt either. Being comfortable with a particular brand or series is a good thing... it shows (usually) that someone has had good products and paid seemingly fair prices. It only makes sense to give them a first look or the benefit of the doubt over an unknown brand when looking for new purchases. Many brands have a following (loyalty) that's based on service... even some for lots of product failures that have been replaced. For any that are loyal, there are reasons... for those with none, also reasons. If we all though the same, there would be one brand of each item.
  7. What do they smoke out there? If it weren't so incredibly sad, it would be laughable!
  8. They all seem to carry different stuff so tell us what reel you want (or at least which brand you want)
  9. Depends on brand... if I had only one line it would be #14 XT (or #17 in some other lines) I guess you need to also consider your location/water. If I was still in East Tx., I would have said #17 XT for a single, all around line.
  10. Glenn just closed a thread on bed fishing. Any reference to this "controversy" will be deleted. -Kent a.k.a. roadwarrior Global Moderator Not to mention you had to lock your own thread a little while ago! ;D Careful folks, they are in the locking mood!
  11. 1/4 mile was 11.96 @ 110.4 mph... in a 72' Datsun!
  12. Does the name Dexter Manley ring a bell? He's just another example of guys who went to college and couldn't read or write beyond a 2nd grade level. He scored a 6 on the ACT test. And what's the quote?..... something like: "79% of all statistics are made up on the spot" ;D Always like that one!!
  13. I'm only a fan of glass for big, deep diving crankbaits. The weight of the glass will actually lessen the strain and torque that you have to absorb... however, for anything less than the big cranks, I MUCH prefer graphite, as the weight savings is huge, they feel better (to me) and the actions are more finely tuned than any glass rod.
  14. retiredbosn, Fast and flexible are two different terms. Spinning blanks aren't supposed to "lock up" like a mag bass blank... under a heavy load they will still give in the lower half of the blank, regardless of the actual taper or speed. Fast only refers to the action until the blank is "loaded" as defined by 1/3 deflection (not by a fish or heavy load). I'm a fan of a blank that locks up, much like it sounds that you are... which is why I don't build my spinning rods on spinning blanks. You would probably like a "spin jig" rod, as those blanks are designed more closely to the MB rods.
  15. Right and no "true sportsman" would use food or lure to unfairly trick one into biting either... and no hunter would ever hunt over bait or water... and not hunt during the rut either, right? You have to be careful when judging others... ;D ;D
  16. I laughed at the quote from A-Rod when asked why... " I felt a ton of pressure to perform after signing the 10 yr., $250 MM contract..." Maybe he should have signed for a little less if he wasn't up to the pressure! Just another greedy, lying cheater. I would prefer that any known doper not only be kept from the Hall, but as soon as they test positive, the sample should be retested to assure accuracy and then give out an immediate, lifetime ban from the game. Furthermore, they should have to repay any contract signing bonus, that year's salary plus any accrued bonuses and any endorsement dollars.
  17. Negative, Ghostrider. the advantage of the spinning rod is ease of casting the lighter weights and being able to cast the light stuff into the wind. They also manage light line much better on the spool. A spinning rod is not more sensitive by having the guides under, just more stable. In fact, most people argue that due to the reel seat design that they (spinning rods) are actually less sensitive in application. I think that if you have trouble casting a spinning rod that you are doing something wrong... they are very simple. Although it takes a little getting used to feathering the cast with a finger on the spool.
  18. If you fish tackle that is real light or do much in the way of downsized finesse fishing, a spinning outfit just makes sense. To this day, I always have a spinning rod in the rod box... it only comes out a few times a year but when I need it, I have it. My spinning combo is way more versatile than most finesse BC combos. So for a rod that doesn't see much use, having one spinning combo that does what 2 light BC combos wcan do just makes good sense for me.
  19. Berkley claims 3 years on XT with no degradation. I would guess that it's actually longer... and I bet it degrades very slowly if stored properly.
  20. I had to rewind that part because I thought I heard it wrong. ...lol Like you, I thought it was neat, and very original. My wife wouldn't go for that so I want to be the guy who gets those instructions!!
  21. You should have said she could keep the cat- at his house. And since it's a great profession of love, the boyfriend wouldn't mind can feeding him, watering him, neuter him, declaw him, clean his litter box and try to ignore the smell of cat urine... after all, it's a small show of appreciation to your daughter.
  22. What an ugly situation. I am curious as to how someone can build a custom on an RX8 blank for $125 when the rx8 blank alone is over $100 That aside, since it's batson's warranty and he only built it, it sounds like he is going to split the return shipping- that $30 is $20 for batson and $10 for the guy shipping a newly built rod to you. It wasn't his fault the blank was defective, if it was. Maybe it got dinged in shipping. So the bottom line is that you are holding out over $10... Dude, it's 10 bucks! chalk it up to a couple lures lost and get on with it.
  23. Hmm... even #10 XT, or P-line cxx is "easy handling"
