  1. IMO the 2 power Loomis is too light. (I use a spinning rod for that kind of stuff) I actually got rid of my 783 because it felt so light as well. I still have the 784 and 844. They fish and feel totally different. I may build an 843 but it feels nothing like the 783 to me. So if you are set on the 783 or 782, I'd go with the 783, and you could use it to double for shakey heads and some lighter applications. The 783 has a pretty delicate tip and casts pretty light weights. edited to add: I just realized you are in NY so the 783 might be just right for you.
  2. Why is it that they swing about 75% (my estimate) of the fish straight into the bottom of the boat and let them flop around on carpet. Even worse is the culling footage... laying all ALL 5 fish out on the carpeted floor to cull. > Unacceptable! Come on guys, lip em, or swing to the hand or line. Cull without laying them all out on carpet, repeatedly. If us weekenders can do it, a freaking pro should be able to manage it. At least pretend to respect the resource. > These guys are supposed to be the best.... from what I have seen, they excel at catching and abusing fish. So sad to watch. And I don't accept any of the "well it's the classic, every fish is huge..." I'd love to see some controlled water, delayed mortality numbers from this tournament... I bet our heads would spin.
  3. I always wondered why the "natives" ask for opinions of equipment they just bought as opposed to asking for input before making the purchase. In some ways I see this in our society... quite often the "youngsters" seek validation instead of guidance. I see a lot of this in my younger brothers and younger friends. But with the older friends and brother, I see them seeking guidance before doing something, and being confident in what is already done. any good "everything else" thread deserves a shot at team pampers or depends, right? Is it just a coincidence that native and naive are only a letter off?
  4. On a more serious note. ...lol Depends on your dress code. But if you aren't open to IWB or ankle, the pocket or shoulder holster is about the only other reasonable choice. I wouldn't consider thunderwear a good option for a snubbie because the cylinder is wider than the rest of the gun and likely to hang up on the belt or waistband as you draw. The other con is obtaining a full firing grip on the draw... tough to do with your hand down your pants, I would think. And if you ever have to draw, it's unlikely you'll have time to re-grip. Furthermore, I've read and heard that it's VERY uncomfortable to sit down with thunderwear. I actually do carry a snubbie inbtween belt and waistband. (at 8 o'clock position- lefty) It's an IWB holster that fits perfectly between the belt loops. (I also wear it IWB with certain pants) covers easily with only a t-shirt. My daily dress is jeans and a company golf shirt untucked so I am very happy with it. When I have to tuck in, I wear a dockers type pant with a pocket holster.
  5. I just read the flyer and am surprised at how little the discount is. I don't own any old reels worth less than the discount I'd get... so if I'm going to lose money, I'll just make a charitable donation (also tax deductible) to a youth organization of my choice. So the moral of this BPS marketing scheme is to sell your used reels in the BassResource.com flea market, apply proceeds to new reel of your choice at another retailer and then volunteer for a C.A.S.T. event and you will have done much better for the kids and yourself.
  6. Like any new purchase, try one and then decide if you want a bunch. I think you'll like them though, I have yet to EVER hear of someone that regretted an IMX purchase.
  7. here is a place to start http://www.rodguild.com/builderfinder.html But if you will tell us (exactly) what you want to have built, we can probably recommend someone specifically.
  8. I would bet money that BPS forces the MFR's to eat the sale prices while BPS gets all the publicity. I'm thinking that the kid angle equates to a loose form of publicity blackmail to force participation. If BPS was REALLY about the kids or the program, they would accept a smaller profit on Shimano reels and offer them at a discount as part of this program. But the real truth (pun intended) is more likely that with Shimano not in it, the BPS branded reel sales probably quadruple!!
  9. If they only take cash, fold the bills put them in your sock while you work out. Otherwise, be creative and find a way to have your stuff in the room you are in...
  10. To each his own but IMO those articles are WAY overrated... even to rods of same action in the same series will feel different in different powers. Having the best "tool" for the job trumps any continuity you'll notice from having same or similar rods. Buy what makes the most sense for your intended applications and you'll catch more fish.
  11. Sadly, I had the same experience but it was with the offset worm hooks. They were nice and sharp so I started. But after breaking the first hook, I gave the others away.
  12. First of all, let's not forget why these fish were put on the earth... (for any who don't know, it happened on the 5th day) Secondly- these fish are not endangered from overfishing, it's the development and habitat destruction. Thirdly- This guy wasn't a drain on society, he was trying to make it on his own. (props to him for that!) So he does bonus 9 days this way but he wasn't relying on your tax dollars until the state jumped in. Bottom line.... I would rather lose a species of fish to extinction than teach people that you shouldn't try to take care of yourselves in hard times. Besides, if the DFG was worth a crap out there, they would be breeding and stocking these rare fish in all the rivers and creeks that could support them. Next thing you know, the DFG will start hunting the eagles or condors that fish those rivers....
  13. Are you sure? They bought plenty of roids over the past couple of decades...
  14. If we were on shore or on vacation, I might do it differently... but in my case, the beer is for the mental relaxation... which is far more effective (for me) than alcohol as a pain killer. Besides, if I drink enough to kill the pain- I shouldn't be operating a boat.
  15. Absolutely. I cringed when he made the first 2 pulls that didn't work. You have to give a quick, firm pull on the FIRST try. A cold beer before and after the extraction is also highly recommended.
  16. You have mentioned several different times that many people use a transom saver incorrectly and it causes more damage than it saves. But in all the times you have said that, I don't ever remember you giving the correct usage for them. I would- and I bet that lots of people here would have an interest in knowing the right way to use them. (or at least verifying that they do use it right) Would you mind giving us a quick "how to" post? Thanks
  17. There is a fine line between need and want some times. ;D
  18. Even worse is when someone says it's a "mute point" instead of moot point.
  19. You should call a shop or two that carry it... a couple times I needed a single "part" and they sent out something small for actual postage and the cost of the part... but you'll have to call, not email. They might do it for an existing customer or to win a new customer...
  20. That's cool! He'll love it!!
  21. You are probably right, I hunted the heck out of a bow I had Ted Nugent autograph... it never missed after he touched it.
  22. You guys might want to try threadmaster and or threadmaster lite (it's even thinner) for your finish... The consensus with most rodbuilders that have used both is that threadmaster is easier to work with, clearer than flex coat and stays clearer over time. (better UV protection) Perma gloss may be the best option around. I don't have any working experience with it but amongst the rod builders it is said to be the absolute toughest. (and water clear) It a one part. You can manipulate it's pot life by controlling the temp and humidity in the room. Probably worth a small bottle of each to test head to head, especially for those who sell or make a bunch of baits.
  23. I have no opinion on whether to use it or not, but don't use nail polish to seal it. I'd use U-40 or Tru oil, but test it on an old piece of cork with sharpie (assuming he signed with a sharpie) to be sure the sealer didn't eat the ink.
  24. You are right, it wasn't out of context but I was thinking he might have agreed with it. His next post cleared that up, thanks! As to the actual reasoning, I was always told it was this: Sorry I took us off topic.
  25. As it applies to water skiers, I agree completely. But as it reads, you could be ticketed for rinsing off your hands after a release. Bantam, Pretty funny!
